Abs Warning Light

When I bought my car nearly 4 years ago the previous owner said the ABS warning light sometimes comes on, but he had the ABS checked and it works fine. Because it may not happen for months at a time I've never bothered with it, although sometimes it'll light up everyday for a week. Is this common, is there maybe a sensor that needs replacing, if so is it easy?

There are sensors on all four wheels.

As you can imagine they are positioned in such a way that all the road crud and metalic particles build up around them and the toothed wheel attached to the hub which provides the ABS signal.

If you can remove the sensors ( sometimes they corrode in) and give them a gentle clean and also clean the toothed wheel looking for damaged teeth at the same time it can sort out the problem.

The build up can alter the gap between the sensor and the toothed wheel giving errors.

Also check the wiring and plug to the sensors for damage or corrosion.

When fiting the sensors back make sure the area is clean and use the correct torque for tightening the retaining bolt.

If you have a diagnostic code read done it may even tell you which sensor is causing problems.

There is a diagram on the link below showing the basic setup the toothed wheel is refered to as the "speed sensor ring" and the ABS sensor as a "speed sensor"
