Hello all.I have just had my Air Conditioner filled up, and I noticed that when I switch it on it runs for several seconds and then stops,after a short while it runs then stops again, and so on...Is this normal, and sometimes when it on, it seems noisy..Any help would be appreciated...Thanks Roy.

It's normal for the AC to cut in/out, according to the temperature you've selected & the temperature in the cabin. If you crank the temp down, the AC should run for longer (until the desired temperature is met) before cycling again as you describe.

If you turn the temp down to "cold" I think the AC should run all the time.

If you do this and it still kicks out after a few seconds, it sounds like low pressure in the AC system, which normally means just a top up, but you've just had that done?

Hello...Yes like you say I have just had it filled up, Confusing. When it does come on it blow cold alright...Hmmmmm

Hi fellow Lexuns

With regards to this post the scenario described is normal for A/C operation and the noise you can hear is the clutch engaging on the compressor,which operates when the compressor needs to work .When the ambient temprature in the cabin you have set is reached the compressor does not need to work and the clutch disengages. the pulley on the compressor is turned by the serpentine belt but free wheels when the A/C is not in use.

You will need to monitor the length of time your A/C operates normally over the next couple of month and use it at least once a week this stops o rings and rubber pipes drying out and creating leaks.

If the A/C does not operate normally after a couple of months the system is probably leaking, in that scenario as with my 1990 ls 400 the cost and hassle of a repair is out of the question.

This does not detract from the climate control operations and they will still change the air in the cabin but won't cool it.

Hi Mike

If your compressor is running all the time you have low pressure in the system and probably have need of a top up alternativly if your air is ice cold in the cabin and I mean fish fingers ice cold you have a fault in the system as this is not normal running procedure.

The workshop manual also states that before any regassing of the system after total evacuation of the freon gasses a balanced high and low pressure vaccum must take place to evacuate all air and moisture this requires specialist equipment.

This negates the buy a top up can to a great extent and if one uses the top up can it can create problems within the system over time even if it works and as I have found out if the system as leaked it does,nt.

The pressure switch on the system activates the clutch on the compessor if you turn the system to 16 degrees (its lowest) and turn on the A/c the compressor clutch should activate if it does'nt then the system as insufficent gas in it and the A/C will not operate.
