Replaced My Current Key Case With Aftermarket Flip Type Key Case.

Recommended Posts

I really like the audi type flip keys. They feel solid and work well, albeit somewhat larger than the original RX400H key.

I bought one from eBay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-BUTTONS-REMOTE-KEY-CASE-LEXUS-RX-300-SC-250-350-/370090006609?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item562b155851#ht_1581wt_1031

and got it laser cut, fit my transponder in there only to find out that it does not work when I try to start the car. The remote and blade works fine, but it doesnt start the car, but works fine in the original key case. The blade is about 5 to 6 mm longer than the original which is what I am suspecting to be the problem as it increases the distance of the transponder and the dash.. It worked when I held my extra transponder key next to the dash and inserted and twisted the key, BINGO "READY" notification.

Its sad as this aftermarket case is extremely well built, heavy and solid. The flip function works a charm and its a nice thing to carry around instead of the boring and quite frankly brittle oringinal key case (i have broken 2 in the past 6 months).

Anyone else experience this? Is there another type of flip key that I can try? I would really like one, and one that works.

Just eliminate the obvious have you tried removing the transponder from the new case and holding it close to the key area while the new key is in the lock?

+1 - Good advice IMHO. Hopfully that might help...

Boxbrown, yes I held it close to the ignition switch while having the blade of the new key in the ignition and it started. I think this is a distance issue, but I am not sure if I get the blade cut to size, it would still work as the transponder is lodged a little further up in the new flip key case. I can give it a try but everything costs so much money its crazy. Auto locksmith rip offs.

That's odd as I know other members have used that key in the IS200 and it works fine, which means that the RX perhaps is more sensitive about the transponder being right next to the lock.

Hmm, it would be odd that the distance makes that much difference as I know for a fact that certain unscrupulous mechanics were removing the transponders from customer keys and taping the transponder inside the steering coloumn housing they then just needed to get a unregistered key cut and no programming required, the key was then sold to even more unscrupulous souls who just opened the vehicle with the key and drove off, the transponder being within range all the time means the customer/owner never knew that key had no transponder in it.

That was a good few years ago now when they first became available as a security device, just proving the old theory if it can be protected, it can be stolen

I know that this probably wouldn't make any difference, but have you tried a different transponder in the key case, it shouldn't make any difference, but it would eliminate an issue with the transponder itself.

Also I'm not sure of the exact way these work, but would it be possible to put some sort of conductive material (e.g. a sliver of foil) in the key case, to effectively make the distance from the actual key to the transponder closer, if that makes sense?

I'm keen to find the outcome, because I found these on eBay the day before you posted this thread and I was very interested because I have a key that is held together with masking tape, and I miss the flip type key I used to have with my last car.

Box and dobbo

I will keep you guys posted on the outcome. I have just ordered another one of these and an extra uncut blade from the eBay seller. It is shipped now from China, so should take a couple of weeks to get here. Once its here, I will get a locksmith to cut the blade to size before cutting the key. I will have a go immediately while the locksmith is there to see if he has any ideas. I dont know about the silver foil idea and will also try another transponder. I have 3 working transponders all paired to the car. Only one key left though, and as they are so brittle, I might not have another key soon.

Dobbo, if this works, I would definitely recommend them. They are much more solid than the original keys and have a nice and heavy feel to them too. The construction is faultless in my opinion.

Thanks guys

I had a similar experience with my RX key case. I have tried two of the flip ones so far, but never worked.

The 1st one was a wrong cut.

The 2nd one (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Brand-New-Folding-Key-Remote-Case-LEXUS-ES-RX-GX-GS-/260716271268?pt=UK_Car_Parts_Vehicles_Automobila_ET&hash=item3cb3e696a4) was a perfect cut with laser cut machine from A1 See Cure Security Specialists -http://www.a1seecure.co.uk/)

With the transponder in the key case, key turns the engine but will not start it But with the transponder held close to the ingintion key, it starts the car

I even went as far as linning the inside of the key case with a aluminium foil, still will not work - I had to abandon the whole idea -

I got a refuned in the end when I complained to the guy via eBay -

I had a great success with the standard Lexus key http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-BUTTONS-REMOTE-KEY-CASE-LEXUS-SC-350-250-RX-300-/160612901380?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item2565466204 - works perfeectly for me

Good luck with the folding key

Hi Rx300se. After reading your message, I am now even less convinced that this will work. Although you didnt mention that you cut the blade to size. Have you noticed that the blades are much longer than the stock key blades? I might get them cut down even more than the stock one just to see if it works.

  • 2 weeks later...

I have a RX 300 (54 plate)

Glad this has come up as both my keys are broken and stuck together with super glue i think :crybaby:

The Grey key looks OK

I am assuming that a replacement key from Lexus is expensive that is why every one is trying an alternative :tomato:

I like the look of the folding key and it does look robust why dont Lexus produce a key like that

are they expensive to get cut to what you want ...sorry for all questions

Guys, I have some sweet news. I got the flip key to work!! woop woop. It was really a punt but it worked. It is definitely the length of the blades that make it hard for the transponder coil in the dash to register the key. I got a professional key cutting home service provider to come over and have a look and my keys. Excellent guy I must say. He was willing to experiment with me to see if it would work. I did have the regular type keys to cut as well just in case this didn't work.. BUT IT DID!!!

WHat we did was cut about 3 to 4mm off the blade with a bog standard saw (he didn't have anything else to cut the blade with, they usually don't reduce the size of the blade). After that, he fired up his PC in the van and set up the laser cutter to read the original blade. Once done, we crossed our fingers and let this key cutting concoction to do its thing on the new reduced size blade. 10 seconds later, key was ready with the transponder in tact. Gave it a whirl and PRESTO, BEEP.. READY signal.. Dan takes a bow, I do the chicken.

Here is a comparison of the 2 keys side by side. The one that I got done earlier that didn't work, and the one that did (on the right).

I used autokeysquad.com by the way. The guy's name is Dan who was very helpful and generally a nice guy. Anyways, result. Go for it guys, these things work. I now have a solid key that I am very pleased with. I will be surprised if I manage to break this one. It seems unbreakable.
