Not Broken In? 100,000Miles?

Hi guys I see alot of commenst from people about this topic... is that true if a car is well maintained and serviced correctly that its not broken in till 100k?

I have just bought a 09 220d with 14k on the clock I plan on keeping it for 3yrs but I average 30-35k a yr. i know the car will not have a great re sale value which isnt a great concern.. but how long a life is expected from these engines!!!

An off subject question. My car is obviously still under warranty can I drop into any Lexus Garage and ask about noises in the gearbox i'm a small bit concerned about?

The later diesel engines are apparently a lot better than the earlier ones which had far ranging problems including cylinder heads so if properly maintained should be good for a long time,put it this way if my Citroen Belingo diesel is still going strong at 147,000 miles with no oil useage issues the Lexus engine should be even better.

As for warranty repairs I would think any Lexus dealer should be able to perform warranty work as it is paid by Lexus GB and also if you bought an approved used Lexus from Edinburgh and lived in Exeter you wouldn't be expected to make a 500 mile drive for a service at the selling dealer.

These engines (built in Poland) have a tendancy to blow head gaskets and warp the all-alloy engine. This will mean a new head & block if it happens. The gearbox noises may be clutch related and you will get the brush off. Variants of this ASIN gearbox are used in several Toyota products in the US (FJ Cruiser and Tacoma) and in a Cadilac. The stainless steel release bearing wears channels into the alloy release bearing shaft and makes movement jerky. You will notice a chattering noise from the footwell of the passenger compartment which disappears when you press the clutch. This is the bearing moving around because of excessive freeplay due to the wearing of the shaft. Sorry to put a dampner on your new purchase, but this is my experience. I won't be buying a manual Lexus again or a newish one for that matter. Toyota have lost their quality standards.

I've just traded in my IS220D. At 115,000 miles the head gasket went. I had extended the warrantee but Lexus's warrantee company decided that a head gasket was not covered under warrantee as it was not a mechanical part !? Fortunately I had the dealership on my side and they eventually agreed to pay the £6K repair bill. Anyhow she's been traded in against a petrol auto IS250C.
