Broken Coil Spring

Symptoms - loud click/clunk when accelerating after braking, and when turning at low speeds.

This is what happens when councils don't look after their roads. All that thunking through potholes, and over speed bumps, it wears things out. Still, this is the first ever broken spring I've had, on any car.

So what to do - replace just the spring, or try and find a whole new strut? I presume the dealer part will be ££££££££?

On my '94 I removed the whole front strut, and worked on a bench to replace the broken spring

This was more convenient and made the whole job fairly reasonable to do.

If you try it, get [or borrow ]a proper spring compressor, don't try it with any mickey mouse quality ones.

You dont say whether this is the rear or front but it looks like the front to me. Anyway, id agree with Royt. I replaced the rear springs on my 93 LS last year. The £20 sping compressers were only just up to the job.

One thing i would add, (forgive me if this is too obvious) do both sides at the same time, even if only one is broken. 1 old spring and 1 new spring will not ride as it should.

£140-odd for a new spring from the dealer :( There are plenty cheaper on the internet but I can't be sure of the quality, and nor can I be sure they'll have the same spring characteristics. So I might as well swallow the cost and buy from Lexus.

I would also change both springs as tolerances vary between batches so you may, even with a genuine OEM spring, still have an inbalance if only one is replaced.
