one me new car, on the roof right at the front, it's only about an inch long by 1/2 inch wide and it looks like surface rust only so far, so i wanna get rid of it, any ideas on how much that might cost me

:question::unsure:

depends on if trime needs removing to address the rust. remember you cant cure rust, only remove it. get a specialist on the job or alternatively, live with it as it may start to occour in the usual bad drainage places... unless you want to have the whole thing stripped and sorted....

From the other forum and this one, it sounds as though you've bought a dog with fleas.

Get it checked out before throwing any more cash down the drain.

i would get that sorted.

make sure they put acid traeatment clean off and seal properly it migh not come back.

I had a patch on my nissan and i covered it up and for 8 years has never goten any bigger. but when i had my honda that just fell apart.

Dog with fleas???

YOu kidding, right? its a £4k motor, not the £44k motor it was in 1992. so its got a few teething probs. nothing that cant be fixed whilst still offering great value...

I aint got an LS so I aint biased. I just think that you hav eto expect the odd hicup. Like the Waterpump bearing on my GS going this morning as I started her up to take he for an MOT. of course it passed but I still need to get the water pump sorted. well its just wear and tear... when you want a pet, you don't buy a doberman and thinnk you can feed it fish flakes!

Excellent quote

I actually have noticed a tiny bit above the window.. dodgy place to have rust.. all due to a stone chip. I will get this sorted ASAPeven if i just temporarily patch it before i take it to the body shop

Thanks guys!

well if the only things I need to do to get it back to good condition is to get some new brake discs and 4 someone to take care of the little rust spot, compared to my Jag, which was a £3k car when I bought it, it's still a bargain! :D

atleast now I dont have to get new tyres, brake pads, exhausts, catalyser, fuel tank, fuel pump, cd player, fuses, etc, etc.... :)

... and before you say it, yes I've been quite good at buying dogs with fleas so far, or rather dogs with 3 legs, 1 of which broken, only 1 ear, blind and suffering from constipation! :winky:

My "dog" had lots of flees, I keep trying to get rid of em, but they keep comming back :o

Does your air-con work ?

Have you checked your power steering pump for leaks ? (a common problem)

I've already mentioned the steering swivel joints

how's the neon's doing in your dash

As the timing belt been changed ?

(just a few of the problems I've had - still love the car though !)

cheers !!

Ps - Nice wheels :D

hehe thnx, that made me feel a whole lot better! and there's me thinking this will mean i'll no longer have to be on first name terms with my garage owner cause i now have a reliable Lexus... :)

aircon seems to work ok, it's blowing cold air when and if i want it to, as far as i can tell...

havent checked the PAS pump yet, I'll have a look this evening. steering seems fine though, dont think there'll be a problem. timing belt's up for a change at 120k i've been informed, so still 9000 miles to go, and the neon in the dash is working rather nicely, all my collegues were certainly impressed! great car,

If that was my budget I would buy one deffo....

rather an LS 4 than an early GS 3. Better car in every respect. the only reason I prefer the late GS over the same price LS is the styling and economy. but at the £4k range I would sod the economy and go for the best car by far, the LS400...

Would still like one kinda now...

The LS is a very fine motor... alot of people give it stick (funny those who dont have one) saying its an old mans car

Well.. funny that.. i am getting old.. not younger... and arent the older more wise?

Follow suit is all i say.. enjoy it while your young! :P

Stuff ecomonomy.. if you fly 1st class you expect to pay more for a 1st class ride.

When someone asks you what car do you have do you find they raise their eyebrowes? However old the car?

Its great aint it! ;)

funny enough, when I get asked what I drive I always either laugh it off without answering or I say a toyota.

Then if they never see my car they don't think anything of it. but if they do, then they either blast me for not being entirely honest or they are just pleasently supprised.

I can now of course legitimatly say I drive a honda civic!

tellling people you have a lexus makes you look like a BMW wanna be. better to be subtle about it and just enjoy it for yourself, not for the how the rest of the world are gonna react to one facet of your life.

Its that thinking that kinda makes me wanna get an old cheap LS and just keep it tip top for another 150k before it died or was no longer comfortable.

I've always thought that unless you have a 1 day old top of the range model you don't draw attention to it. Only on the basis that if I boldly say I have a Lexus and we go out side and instead of seeing what they imagined, like a brand new SC430 or LS 430 they saw my fairly Modest GS, they may experience anto climax that leaves me feeling behind the 8 ball. I'd much rather people were pleasently supprised not let down by anything I discribe!

hmmm... I'mhearing the voices!

I'd prefer to have a GS Sport but as I cant find one and I needed to get rid of my old car this was the best I could find. I'll keep it for a year and then I'll try again if I can find a GS300 Sport, atleast then I wont have to make a decision based on the fact I need to get rid of my old car asap!

flotsam  Posted on Jul 11 2003, 12:16 AM A 4K car!!?!?!?

He hasn 't stopped paying for it yet!

Well I hope that I wont have to pay anything more for it, but I would think I'll need to spend atleast another £1000 over the year to keep it running... which''ll still save me £1500 compared to the Jag.. :)

I'm not expecting it to stay perfect for as long as I have it, gotta be realistic somewhat, it's an 11 year old car afterall! Although I hope all the things I've read about Lexus reliability prove to be true..

I find if I tell people I drive a Lexus most don't even know what it is (mostly the women, for some strange reason.. :) ), some are impressed just by the name and most are impressed when they actually see the car. More because of all the gadgets though! :D

Can anyone verify when the second Cam Belt change is required??

Im looking at a 92 Mk1 and it has 132K on it now. From Micelis reply earlier I suspect its 120K. Does anyone know how much to change on approximately?? If the belt hasn't been changed on snhedule I need to use it as a bargaining chip.

Anyone know about Burning Neons in the Dash. repair costs?? got that too.

neons in the dash are VERY expensive. if you do a search I think it's been covered in previous threads.

Cam belt can be changed for £150 at a local garage but Lex will be after nearer £500 and its a "critical" job so the dealer price is the one to quote obviously.

Goood luck!

Loz

Ps how much is the car?

It does'nt matter how old it is or how much you pay for a car or how much you spend on it

If you ENJOY it thats the bottom line STUFF everybody else :P

My son paid 7k on a fifteen year old car(cosworth)and spent shed loads of cash on it.......

but he loves it(does'nt like newer cars)he knows he'll never get his money back but loves

driving a CLASSIC and turns heads everywhere he goes......so dont criticise peeps for doing

what they enjoy(wheres that two fingered smilie) :P :P

Rant over :shutit: :shutit:

The cam belt should be done every 60K - I've just done mine which cost me £110, £40 for the part £70 for fitting.

Forget repairing or replacing the neons - unless you can find some going cheap in a breakers yard - Very unlikely.

A cheap fix (which I have seen done and looks okay !!) it to buy some modelers flourecent paint (the one I saw was green) and spray the needles whilst still in the dash (you only have to remove the clear outer cover) - make sure you mask well though !! :shutit:
