is200 Newbie
Would anyone know if the coil packs have a "shelf life" as such - do they need replacing after certain mileages. have had a few mornings where its been a bit damp where the car has struggled a bit to start and i am sure its the coils. Car is just under 100k and i am pretty sure they have not been replaced. Pretty expensive parts x 6 as well !
billyo
Hi my is200 had covered approx 70000 miles definitly on original coil packs .One coil pack packed up car ran very lumpy garage said no way you could no when they will not work .i asked if it was worth replacing them all but the cost at the time seemed a lot so just replaced one covered a further 11000 miles no problems
is200 Newbie
Thanks Billyo How did you manage to find out which one was at fault? - I might get them all done but think i will replace them over the next few months due to the cost - at £30 each they are quite expensive for what they are but i suppose without them or with them not operating correctly the car is not running properly, its only a bit hard to start in the damp at the moment but i am expecting it may get worse. Have read that dicky ones can also cause the car to use more fuel than normal as well so it may well be worth replacing all in the long run? lexusstuff
The garage can plug in the diagnostic kit and tell you which one is misfiring. If you can pay for all of them getting done at the same time then you may as well, I had an audi and one failed after another. Not sure if it's a DIY job? They can fail but not through simple age - usually making an IS200 obviously run very badly especially under heavy acceleration. Even then, if they are very dirty which holds moisture, they may just need wiping. Poor fuel consumtion on the IS200 is almost invariably because it is so easy to drive in a way that makes it gobble fuel without going any faster. Try driving yours like an old lady for a week & if the economy improves to a reasonable figure - the coils are fine.
kam05
There is no 'shelf life' on coil packs. I ran a IS200 (up until 12 months ago) to 145k and it still had the original coil packs.
steve2006
If you are replacing the coil packs it makes sense to also replace the plugs at the same time, a dodgy plug can take out a coil pack.
