Shaking And Rev-Like Sound - Help!

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I have an IS200 (02 Plate) and on a recent motorway journey I started getting very bad shaking at between 45-65 MPH. Touching the brake when it's doing this is extremely scary - the car really wobbles and shakes like crazy. Below those speeds everything is fine, and above those speeds it seems to be fine. To add to the woes though, every now and then at high speed 70-85 I hear a noise from the engine that sounds like it's revving slightly higher (but the rev counter stays the same). I had the wheel balanced and alignment checked and re-done - but still the problem continues.

Any helps, ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks guys,

Lee

Hi mate, your symptoms are the exact same as mine a few months ago except for the engine sound. No idea about that noise or if it's related to the vibrations but with mine the shaking was caused by a sticking brake calliper. Drove fine up to 45-50mph then would wobble until I got to 70mph then stop. If I touched the brakes between 45-70mph the car would shake like mad but again would be fine breaking from 70+mph.

Fixing the calliper didn't completely cure the shake but made it A lot better. Then worked out I had a slightly buckled front wheel. Put the spare on and now drives perfect.

Hope this helps even if only to eliminate possible causes.

Good Luck

Chris

Had the same problem a few months ago, and it was a sticking brake caliper.

It was the first time in my life that I was being overtaken by some angry truckdrivers! :phone:

Thanks for the reply guys - much appreciated. I suspected it could be a stick calliper as one wheel feels distinctly hotter than the other after stopping. Suppose I best get it sorted sooner rather than later - before it wears down the pads and starts warping the discs! Maybe the revving sound is the noise of the braking action (pad pushing against the wheel) - or maybe it's getting so hot down in that area that the engine cooling fan is coming on? Anyway - if you don't mind me asking how much was it to fix the sticking brake calliper?

Thanks again everyone.

Does sound like a stuck calliper if the offending wheel is obviously hotter to touch than the others.. You should also notice the smell of brakes when you get out of the car and the offending wheel will have visibly more brake dust on it.

Ok so here's the bad news mate. It's expensive!

If your calliper has been sticking for a while then it's probably warped the disc so you'll need new discs as well.

Two ways you can go about it. On my wife's 200SE I had the calliper reconditioned at a cost of £110 at a Lexus specialist. Then needed new discs as it had warped plus labour the final bill was £300. I don't recommend this way tho as 4000 miles later it stuck again and had to get a new calliper. So by trying to save money I just gave myself more problems and ended up spending more in the long run.

On my 200Sport a year later exact same problem. Took it to Lexus main dealer this time after the hassle of the wife's car. New calliper £350, new discs £170 plus labour, final bill £620 and they heavily reduced the labour cost which was nice of them, the manager must have been having a good day. They kept my car for 24hours and gave me a brand new IS250 courtesy car free of charge!

This calliper also re stuck 2000 miles later but as Lexus had carried out the work they fixed it free of charge and another free courtesy car for 24 hours.

Hope this helps mate.

Thanks for the advice Chris. Took the car down to a local garage last night - and it was a problem with the calliper - although it wasn't sticking but something to do with worn away piston holes which were rusted and full of dirt! Anyway £180 for a new calliper, inclusive of labour and a free courtesy car (albeit a shoddy old fiat punto!). Being fitted today, hopefully it will resolve the problem!
