Mk4 Gearbox Type

Oh great knowledgeable ones,

I've just forked out for my Mk4 lpg to pass it's mot, new wishbone, spring, rear pads so now I'm thinking of changing the useless gearbox, no fifth gear. Been looked at, gearbox man, auto specialist, couldn't find the fault, even with the fault code. Wanted at least £300 to poke around so I declined.

There's a 5 speed gearbox for sale on Fleabay (other auction sites are available), rather cheap, have a look.

I don't have a manual. I seem to recall that there were perhaps two gearbox types for the Mk4, both 5 speed of course.

How can I be sure that the Fleabay one is exactly compatible with mine? Numbers and plates to look for and where to look for them would be very much appreciated. One day I might buy that workshop manual.

Hi Nick,

The Mk 4 gearbox for the UK market in 1999 hadpost-18429-0-48014200-1348650424.jpgpost-18429-0-79063600-1348650402.jpgpost-18429-0-79627700-1348650375.jpg the part no 35010-50121 on a large yellow label attached to the top of the gearbox housing. There is also a small blue Aisin label down on the right side. There may well be other part nos for the identical item, as Toyota seem to have a habit of issuing updated part nos on a regular basis. See attached photos for comparison with the eBay item.

Regards

Alan

Hi

Dont waste any money trying to get another type of gearbox for the 1998 mark IV LS400 there was only one choice. It came with a 5 speed box the fifth gear is a overdrive that shows up on the shift indicator as D The 4th gear is 4 on the shift indicator.

If you get so called technichans to look at your car I suggest you speak to People who are experienced in the car you have.

Ambermarine, 'twas an autobox mechanic specialist that inspected my box and he was stumped. Didn't charge me. Error fault is 'P076 solenoid electric' but he said the resistance was OK, seemed to think it was a valve body fault, which means taking the box to bits. The overall problem, I suspect, is that no bugger knows much about these boxes because they never break.

Steve 2006, in an earlier post you mention two boxes for the Mk4, 35010-50121 and 35010-50120. What's the difference?

The Fleabay seller still hasn't got back to me about the box, looks like I'll be driving with no 5th gear for the foreseeable future, very frustrating.

Thanks, Nick.

Hi Nick

The solenoids are all accessible from the bottom side of the box and can all be replaced without taking the box out, with regards to the valve body this is in fact at the end of the solenoid and may be sticking it can be accessed by removing the sump of the box in situ.

The resistance of the solenoid will still show correct if the solenoid is sticking removing /replacing it and cleaning the valve body may solve the problem.

Ambermarine, thanks for that, I've finally managed to find more information on my P0763 fault here via an e-mail enquiry with an autobox specialist:

http://engine-codes.com/p0763.html

Sounds like a dirty solenoid. I'm not minded to have a go myself. Still no response from the fleabay seller but I can get another 5speed box delivered for £260. Question now is, do I trust my local autobox specialist to clean my solenoid, or do I go the whole hog and simply get the box replaced? Or do I keep driving round with no fifth gear?

Shift solenoid S4 id the only one which is activated when 5th gear is selected so would point to this being defective, if the coil resistance is reading correctly that would suggest a sticking plunger within the solenoid which can occur with these transmissions.

The link to the fault code only mentions S1,S2,S3 which would be applicable to a 4 speed transmission as the 5 speed has 4 shift solenoids.

Alanr,

You're the man, many thanks! I've e-mailed the seller, no reply yet. Gearbox is only £85 plus carriage, rather cheap, here:

Nick.

Hi Nick

I would say this is the 4 speed transmission from a Mk3 95 - 97 as this sellers other parts listed are all " 97 Ls400 " but are all definitely from a mk3

Alan is correct with his info re yellow label and the vvti engine has the same gearbox from 97 - 2000

Always clarify with your seller that the parts are removed from a Built in Sat Nav Model with a VVTi engine
