Led Daytime Running Lights On The Is?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys

So I've owned my IS250 for 12 days now and so far it has spent more time back with Lexus than with me. A sore subject!!

Anyhow - they've loaned me a CT200h, which is perhaps a whole other topic of discussion (do people generally like them or what?! They're quite nice inside, but I am desperate to get my IS back!!).

Anyway - one of the features of the CT that I do like is the Audi-style daytime running lights on the front. And I know there has been some discussion on these forums and others about aftermarket offerings. BUT, yesterday I was passed by an old guy in a new IS going the other way. And he had LED running lights. And they looked great. So - I wondered if anyone knew if these were now an official option on the IS now? I wouldn't mind upgrading mine at some point if this is the case, as I think they look really smart.

Blimey you must have been unlucky there. Not a good moment to say mines been brilliant. :whistling:

I'm sure FA will tell you. I think the DRL's only came in from 2011. Could be an expensive upgrade I'm thinking.

I know Normski I can't believe it! In fairness there's not much wrong with the car. Just the CD player didn't work! They've had to order a replacement, but then the wrong unit was delivered and they had to get that replaced with the correct one. Sounds like a succession of plain bad luck really, and i don't really mind too much. The other issue was that when I agreed to buy the car it was on the understanding that the wheels would all be professionally refurbed because they were all in a bad way considering the age. Then they changed their mind and said they'd replace the wheels under warranty. 'Great', I thought! But then the guy told me that they were only replacing 3 or the wheels as one had nothing wrong with it. I mentioned to the sales guy that I expected the remaining wheel to be perfect, and he said it would be. Then when I got the car, it had 3 lovely new wheels on it, and 1 that had a massive crub scrape on the rim, a big chip in it, and some bubbling paint. Needless to say wasn't impressed! So this wheel (apparently Lexus GB won't honour the warranty on it!?) is being fully refurbed by some specialist company (at their expense, not mine!). So in all not agreat start, but doesn't alter the fact that the car itself is still absolutely brilliant. Hopefully will have it back tomorrow.

And yeah I just saw that the LED DRL's are on the new F-Sport models? I agree though, could be pretty expensive, and a difficult (maybe even impossible?) DIY job. Maybe best to stick with them as they are!

DRL's are a legal requirement now. Hence all >2011 cars irrespective of make will have some kind of DRL's.

Swell do a retrofit kit for the older MY's that costs too much. I wonder if they've sold any: http://is.sewellpart...-2010/2400.html

This requires baking your headlights open, installing the DRL's and sealing them back.

This is not completely true

The law states that all newly developed models after 2011 need to have some type of DRL lights. This is why you see some 61 plate IS models without the DRL feature as it was obviously developed before 2011. The LED DRL lights were added to the F-SPORT and SE-L models for 2011 and then the Advance model in 2012. Below is a photo of my 2011 SE-L with the LED's. I wasn't a big fan at first but now I love them!

Sewell have sold loads of kits to people on a USA Lexus forum. It DOES NOT require any baking of headlights as it is a complete unit swap with a custom wiring loom. There was a significant price drop at one point this year but I think that this has gone back up again. Unfortunately it is not a simple swap, especially with cars that came with standard HID'S due to the deletion of the AFS feature. As a result, when the newer 2011> lights were fitted to post 2011 cars with AFS, the AFS error light comes on. Last time I looked, the only real way to remove this was to place some black tape over the light in the cluster.

Thanks for the clarification man. Your car looks stunning BTW :)

+1 to that! Your IS looks amazing in white and those LEDs just add the final touch of class.

Thank you for the kind comments. The IS is a stunning shape to start with :)

Had my IS in for service today and got a basic is220d adavanced for a loaner. didnt seem to have any DRL or any lights on at all.

The LED DRL's were only fitted to the 2012 Advance models, so a lot of the Advance models won't have them.

FA.... They got the design of the drl's just right right. Really like the way they mimic the 'L' shape as seen ithe rear cluster. Nice attention to detail Lexus.... Well done 10/10!!

Interestingly, white is very much the 'IN' colour judging by the new cars I have noticed recently. Fashions and trends eh!!

Yes I have to agree. The LED's have been done very well indeed. It would have been very easy to make it look too much like the Audi lights or poorly integrated like the new Kia's which look like aftermarket specials. Here is another picture from head on.

White does seem to be the 'in' colour at the moment. It is very popular in a lot of new cars but I have only seen 2 other white IS' in the Bristol area. It looks stunning when clean and great in the dark as well, where it almost looks matte when the light catches it ;)

Acutally F A, the LED's were never fitted to the IS200d due to the deletion of the diesel from the Lexus range. You will only see LED's on petrol models only regardless of the age.

IS200D and IS250 are both no longer produced in anticipation of the next generation IS early next year.

There are plenty of IS200d F- Sports with the DRL LED's just no SE-L's

There is a topic here: http://www.clublexus...-led-strip.html

The whole sewell thing won't work for us here as the headlights in the USA are not angled the same it is also extremely costly. Apparently they are plug and play, however the LED strip won't light up unless it's wired up correctly to a spare fuse. Oh, and it's apparently also easier if you do not have HID/AFS lights...

This thread will also help: http://www.clublexus.com/forums/is-second-generation/631474-diy-2012my-led-headlight-installation-how-to.html

My mistake, reading the thread I understood that Ricostuart was talking about the IS200D Advance model not having DRL's.

Of course the late F-Sport would have them.
