I know in modern cars they have stopped changing oil in the gearbox due to the fact that it meant to last for the lifetime of the car but what is a lifetime of a car and if its not changed what are detrimental effects on gears, drive etc I personnally want to do mine

What are peoes thoughts etc and anyone ever done it was it better after?? I have always kept cars for 7-10 years and always go over the top with servicing as my car always has to be at its best. I was thinking of using a gearbox specialist oh by the way my car has done 110000 miles and is a 220D

mines on 108000 and has never had a gear box oil change. According to http://taimurkhana.blogspot.co.uk/2012/10/lexus-220d-service-schedule.html (4th last point on 2nd page), gear box oil should be inspected every 40K miles or 4 years. I think it would need to be topped up if its less or changed if its dirty but I have no idea how to tell the difference between an oil that needs changing or not.
