Hi all

First of all thanks very much for contributing to a forum like this. Its an invaluable read on many issues. I love my lexus cars, Mrs has an IS220D and I have had IS200's all with excellent reliability.

Then I bought this GS300 which needs an auto gearbox change. The problem was there when I bought the car, i think it does not shift beyond 3rd gear, so will rev at 4000 RPM/60Mph. Had the P codes for shift soleniods, till I took it to a transmission specialist who found the tranny oil burnt with metal shavings in it. Anyway cut a long story short, I have luckily found another transmission with warranty.

My question is how easy it is to change the transmission on the car, can an ordinary garage do it with ease or does it need specialist (transmission specialist) tools? Has anyone done this and did it need any programming after the tranny transplant?

Many Thanks

Sean

Hi all, just for reference have any of you had to replace the transmission of your gs300 (gen 3) due to the car not shifting beyond 3rd gear? Also is there a fuse for the audio system that (if it blows) would make the radio dead...

Hello and welcome to the LOC.

I'm surprised to hear of a later model GS300 have such a major failure, it makes you wonder what caused it, what mileage does the car have?

The car is a rear wheel drive so a transmission change in my opinion is easier than a FWD vehicle, The exhaust normally has to be dropped, propshaft disconnected and then the bell housing bolts and transmission mount needs to be removed, gear change linkages, electrical wiring and then drop the box.

Any half decent garage should be able to do the job.

Did you get the torque convertor with the replacement transmission as they are normally a matched pair? Also if it has been seperated from the transmission and if the same as other Aisin boxes it will need correctly aligning on refitting.

Provided the 2 transmissions are exactly the same (check the part numbers it should be 35000-30B60) Aisin A960E it should be plug and play with no reprogramming required.

There are normally 2 fuses (Radio no.1 and Radio no.2) located in the interior fuse box.
