Dpf Removal Or Regeneration? Advice And Opinions Needed

Hi Forum Members,

I'm afraid my little baby is220d is suffering from constant problems - I think related to the dpf filter :msn-oh:. I've read on this forum a couple of threads and it looks like my case is typical (well I hope is not a common fault because I always had solid opinion about lexus engineers...) a complete removal sounds like a major operation and not quite sure about that... why would you remove something that was design/fitted by a specialists for a good reason...?

Currently I'm waiting to hear a quote from the local lexus dealer for the new filter fitting but I don't expect a realistic figure ...

Should I go for the full regeneration process or remove DPF completely from the exhaust system?

Any advice or guidance are welcome.

Given the cost to replace and the trouble they cause, I think I would go for a complete DPF and EGR removal.

Search on here as there is a company in the South West that offer this. You will have no further issues and according to the poster on this site the car will pass its MOT and feel renewed. The system will suffer no ill effects and no warning lights will be activated (their claim)

They are only there to comply with the emissions regs for new vehicles.

The cost is less than half the price of a new DPF (let alone fitting) and they can also use a piggyback remapping device (similar to the TTE system) that can offer up to 220BHP

I'd love to drive one to see what the difference is

Hi I got answer from local Lexus dealer regarding new DPF filter fitting:

worst case scenario is going to be about £2340.00 inc vat if the O2 pipes and EGT sensors need replacing as they can weld themselves into the DPF, if they come out ok you will be looking at about £1460.00 inc vat

It was fairly new vehicle, I know that it wasn't cheap but I'm quite sure you wouldn't expect that Lexus engineers would make such a f**k-up designing exhaust system for those great cars... Are they having a laugh?!

I don't think I have to explain why I'm looking for an alternative route ...

Thanks Dennis for your advice, I must say that sounds very optimistic..., if that would solve the problem, ok on MOT and more power! YES YES YES :)

...but my nature is a bit more sceptic and I would like to get some more info about regen first, If that would fail ... then defenetly I'm not going to buy new DPF filter!

I have removed DPF, 5th injector, twin cat, swaped OEM exhaust with inox free-flow pipe fi60mm and twin rear silencers free-flow instead of single OEM, bypassed EGR, swaped OEM air-filter with K&N panel filter.

My car runs better that any IS220d.

I'm still waiting for chip installation.

If you wanna remove DPF go and find my topic "is220d best mods" and contact "P&P autoservices".

thanks Shigo for answer,

List of the mods you've implemented is impressive, I'm sure that driving your lexus is a pure pleasure ;)

Currently I'm considering complete removal (answer from the Dorset dealer = over £2300 ! for new one!) but before that I was looking into the regen first. Have you tried to regenerate DPF filter? or that is just waste of time?

Thanks as well for directing to yours thread about the is220d mods ... I found some more recommendations for p&p autos on this forum, seems to be a good choice...

I've tried to contact Peter from P&P Autos but he is on holiday and be will be back after New Years...

Meanwhile I've done little Internet research for DPF removing companies in Somerset and surronding area and I came across two completely different statements referring ECU reprogramming in Lexus IS220d ?!

  • According to some 'experts' in the business ECU is fully reprogrammable

  • or : ECU is currently impossible to remap - no software / hardware available on market - instead use DPF emulator

So what is the real answer?? Do I have to use DPF emulator?

I've check other forums and spoke with some mechanics - everywhere same answer - only DPF emulator....so if someone is offering remap for is220d the best way would to avoid that 'companies' even for break pads replacement...

another interesting thing is that I've read some stories about unwanted side effect after modification - like for instance white smoke from exhaust ???

Can you just physically block the 5th injectors fuel line? The electronics would then tell the valve to open, but fuel would be injected.

The pressure diff sensor would presumably never give a high difference (blocked) reading with the DPF guts taken out?

hello mate

I exactly know the feeling . You think it is long way to drive to Taunton but: These gus=ys offer proper service and tested by many lexusowner users. I've been there and had my IS220 dpf removed. I've been trying to find company closer to London but I found rumours about companies claiming they can do Lexus but ... . Anyway this company offer full professional service and they really know what they are doing. So I wouldn hesitate to contact Peter and talk to him about your dilemma .

Hello guys, I really want to remove that bloody dpf from my lexus, but its 600+ miles for me to go to Taunton, I'm from Inverness, Scotland. Anybody know someone who could remove DPF in Scotland?

Edit:

I found only 1 company in Glasgow, who does DPF removal for lexus is 220d.

I've had exactly the same problem. I had driven from Mid Wales to Durham when the dreaded Check VSC and limp mode kicked in. Turned off engine and car would run for 5 minutes before dropping back to limp mode. To cut a very long story short, ended up on a 6 hour flatbed journey back home. The usual P2002(particulate trap efficiency below threshold bank 1) alarm was showing when interrogated. After researching here and everywhere else trying to find somewhere near that could do the job, I found these guys - http://www.ecutechtune.co.uk/. These are based in Manchester and even trailer-ed the car up there for me. Have just driven the car 150 miles back, and all I can say is that the car is going better than it ever was. Improved fuel consumption too. So if anyone is looking for someone in the North West, I can recommend these guys. Ask for James. By the way, I had tried all the "magic" additives, but when your car will only run for 5 minutes at a time, trying to get over 3k revs is nigh on impossible. Anyway, damn dpf has gone now, emulator fitted and all hunky dory!

Hi Ray, Sorry for delay. Current fuel consumption is 43.5mpg, but hasten to add that I also have a Chip Express module fitted. I have only driven short local journeys and a couple of around 90 miles. This is slightly better than I was achieving before for the same journeys although when I used to drive to Durham ( which I notice is your neck of the woods! ), I used to get about 50mpg. That is a 269 mile journey for me and have not driven there since October as my lad has returned for Christmas on the train. Overall, the car seems to be running a lot smoother. As stated in my new thread, I'm not sure what will happen when I take the car for its MOT which is due in March - after the new rules come in. Hope this helps :)

If any of you are still thinking about dpf removal then please think again. I decided on getting it done when I was persuaded to do so by a so called professional promising me great mpg's with no emissions problems or MOT worries ever again. If only I knew that these so called companies are just a bunch of highly trained professionals in the art of lying through their teeth who have taught themselives how to hide behind technicalities when it comes to MOT time. Now I'm £550 out of pocket and need a new dpf fitted by a real professional.

One big cycle which has left me completely out of pocket and back where I started from in less then a year.
