Classic Insurance On A Lexus-Beware!

Recommended Posts

I've had my LS400 insured through Adrian Flux for 5 years now as their price was always the lowest.

My insurance is due for renewal next week and the premiums have gone up from £320 last year to £355 this year, so I had a look on the comparison websites and found that More Than would insure me for £206-quite a difference!!

When I looked at my renewal from Adrian Flux I noticed that my no claims bonus was showing as NIL??

I phoned Adrian Flux to point out their error as showing my no claims bonus as NIL when I had been insured for 5 years with the Lexus and assumed my insurance would decrease significantly but was told that I was insured on a Classic policy and you do not earn ANY bonus on this type of policy!!

So had I been on a normal policy for the last 5 years I would now be paying much less for insurance and more annoying is that if/when I sell the Lexus and change to a more modern car I will have ZERO bonus and it will then take me a few years to build up a bonus again.

I tried getting quotes from other companies with NIL bonus and was told I am now considered as a much higher risk because I have no earned bonus and even though I have been insured and driving the Lexus for 5 years this is basically ignored!! My quote from More Than was inaccurate because I said I had 5 years bonus whereas I actually have NIL bonus.

While I have had cheaper insurance over the last couple of years I will be paying for it when I do change cars. I was totally unaware that I was on a classic policy as it doesn't actually say anywhere that it is not a standard policy.

So if you do think about insuring on a classic policy bear in mind you will lose any no claims bonus and will end up out of pocket later on!!

Well pointed out sadly at your expense. This goes for all Classic Car policies.

Tough & expensive lesson.

At your renewell date you should always trawl through the comparisons sites

Its still worth asking insurance companies about your particular position. Mike

Amen to that Mike - every year I change insurer because the renewal is always a ***** take - I have even canceled renewals and then signed up with the same company as a new customer for a lower rate - madness. My insurance is going down each year for a few mins searching :) The renewal notice is quite useful as proof of your no claims bonus so always keep it.

I never knew that either, but from what I've read they should be able to supply you with a document stating you have been insured with them for 5 years and give details of your record which another insurer should accept as proof of your last 5 years driving history.

I think trying to do this online is going to get you nowhere so the old fashioned telephone call will be needed.

Classic Car Insurance from the looks of it is designed for a 2nd car that is used occasionally and that you have another everyday car that will carry your NCB.

My current insurer is the Post Office - I declared my NCB and they did not ask for proof - all on line. They did however say in the documentation to make sure I had proof and to keep safe in case I make a claim. Your NCB is awarded because you have not made a claim - just because the classic company will not give you a discount it does not mean others will not. I moved from a company car to a private car and my insurer respect the period I had not made a claim on the company insurance and gave me a discount.

Good luck

I have my Lexus insured on a fully comp 5k mileage for wife and myself for £230 went up from £198 when I changed from the Mark1 to the Mark 4 This also has protected no claims as I have the full complement of NCB.I also have a kit car runnabout which is based on a Mini engine and that costs £150 a year on a kit car specialist insurance the majors won't insure it.

This is a bonus as last year I had a bump in the kit car and wrote a corsa off no damage to the kit car. The premium went up on my kit car about 20% but did'nt affect the Lexus insurance. It is important to keep insuranses seperate on these type of vehicles for the reasons stated. If your Lexus as little book value the premium can be lowered considerably by taking up excess on damage to body windscreen etc,It will probably save money in the long run as if the car as a lot of damage in a accident it will be written off anyway.

I've now arranged insurance through Hyperformance for £390 which is more expensive than Adrian Flux but it is now on a normal policy so I will start earning NCB again. They have taken account of my 5 years claims free driving with the Lexus and said if I renew through them again next year they will charge as though I have 5 years NCB. All of the other companies I phoned wouldn't even consider my 5 years driving experience with the Lexus and were quoting silly prices of £1000-£1900!!

Brilliant deal. Get the promise in writing as otherwise its not worth anything. Mike
