Hi all,

I've been a member on here for a few years but never posted as I've always found my answers in the forum somewhere - thanks for all your help so far! ;)

I recently took my Is220d (07 plate, 75k miles, owned by me for 4 years) to RMB Lexus to get an estimate for the paint repair, as the valet driver had ran the passenger side down a road sign...! I kindly asked them to see what the slight squeaking noise is on the clutch and apparently I need my DM Flywheel replaced.

My question is: can I use Avensis parts for the DM F and clutch?

Thanks in advance.

I don't know if LOC member Ormi is still active on the forums but if anyone would know he would.

From what I know the Avensis engine is the same but not sure if the gearbox is, but I see where you're coming from as I imagine the Toyota parts are half of what Lexus want.

Yeah Steve, £860 for the DMF alone for lexus. £400 for the whole clutch pack for the Avensis...

I am afraid that for 400 quid you get the clutch pack but withoud DMF.

While the Lexus's DMF costs here about the same ~1200 eur from spare part specialist (original from lexus is about 2.000eur) the DMF for Avensis DCAT costs from the same specialist about 10% less. LUK makes that...

so rather doublecheck how it is.

The parts numbers for the flywheel and clutch kit are listed for the IS only with no crossover to Toyota vehicles :(

Oh dear... Looks like this little Lexi is gonna be handed back to the finance company. I aint spending £1500 on a car that's worth £6k - no way.

Also looks like this is going to be my first and last Lexus. It's been so unreliable, it's beyond a joke.

Years ago I had a Mondeo with 100k on and it has less faults than this iS220d that I've had since it had 25k on!

Sorry to hear your troubles with car. I see you IS220d experience has put you off owning another Lexus. It really shouldn't. Lexus made a mistake with the diesel and your not the first person I've heard say that they've lost faith in Lexus as a brand because of it.

There's a reason why Lexus don't offer a diesel in the range anymore, their rubbish at making them!

Petrol engines however are their strong point. They also seem to be using hybrid technology to its full effect and are a market leader in this technology.

I wish Lexus had never attempted making a diesel. It's done untold harm to the company and brands reputation as solid, bulletproof reliable cars. I hate to say it but if you had bought a 250 instead of a 220 I think you would have a different opinion :)

Hi Chris,

I think you're right, I've heard it said before about the 250. When my cylinder head was getting replaced at 60000 miles, I had a lend of a CT200h and I really liked it. TBH, I didn't like the look and it wasn't very quick in a straight line but the drive and tech were fantastic, so credit where credit is due.

I've emailed Lexus UK with a nicely worded note about my issues with the car and list of things that have gone wrong on it. Bearing in mind that the car had 27k on it when I bought it, it now only has 74k miles on it and I've had the cylinder head, clutch, fly wheel, bearings, egr valve, engine map, injectors, alloys (twice) all replaced, I think it's fair to say I have a strong case for being annoyed with it. It's a fair list to go wrong for 50k miles of motoring and not what you'd expect from a quality brand like Lexus.

I await their reply and hopefully I'll get one.... if the reader does't fall asleep before the end of my email! ;)

  • 3 weeks later...

my dmf broke at 120kkm so I needed to order new one

I was looking everywhere, eBay, intercars, all japan parts aftermarket resellers, and all info I got is that there are replacement for avensis, rav4, and all fwd 2.2d-cat models but for is220d no.

its the major difference in price and that was main lead for me to buy luk or sachs but there was no replacement for is220d because its thicker 15mm or so.

also if you look at toyodiy, you'll se the difference in part numbers.

What is it about the responses I read here about Lexus and Toyota and Diesel? Come on people. Toyota make some of the best diesel engines in the world. They are tank proof. Just look at the video's on TopGear of the Toyota diesel they tried to trash.

The real issue here is technology for technologies sake. Isn't this a case of taking common sense out of the thinking and pushing technology too far? My own feeling is that Lexus are now using and pushing technology beyond the realms of what is useful.

Where is the published research that modern engines with such torque require a Dual Mass product. It's not as though we are driving a Formula1 car now is it.

It's almost as though we have to live our whole lives cosseted by the nanny state, the nanny this and the nanny other. Correct use of the clutch will cause wear on the clutch. I learned to drive in the early 70's when such objects as Dual Mass Flywheels weren't even in the mind of the designer and there were cars equally as powerful and with just as much torque as the Lexus IS220 diesel coping quite happily.

So why a Dual Mass unit. Whose brainchild was this?

I am now looking for a conversion kit to take it back to a plain simple lump of steel machined and ground that the friction clutch can sit on, and of course if driven properly, will do the same damn job without some techy getting his fingers in the pie that then costs me an arm and a leg.

And one final note.

I am being made to look like the idiot at my office. I have colleagues driving 5 year old Audi A6's and VAG group give them a reduced rate on servicing and repairs in order to keep their business. My line manager just paid £220 for a full 60,000 service which included all parts and labour. My IS220d equivalent was over £500.

Why do I drive Lexus? because my original GS300 did 289,000 miles without a murmur. Can somebody explain to me why have Lexus reduced the quality of build on their cars? Is is across the range? I'm not going to risk my money to find out. This is my LAST Lexus!

dual mass flywheel has nothing to do with the power. It was designed to help smooth out the engine - to help eliminate vibrations.

Converting to standard flywheel may be OK - some people say it may harm something (clutch and silentblocks) but I don't think so. Anyway, I hope you will post your experience after a year or two.

Regarding the servicing costs, it is individual. I am not sure whether you can compare it across the market, because each marque has different servicing intervals.

If you switch to standard garage, you should not pay more than 300 pounds.

All you need to have whole car serviced is this:

oil Mobil ESP Formula 5w-30 - 6l
braking liquid DOT 3 - 1l
coolant ethylen glycol - 9l
transmission oil API GL-4 / GL-5 SAE 75W-90 - 1,8l
difefrential oil SAE 75W-85 1,1l
oil filter
air filter
A/C filter

diesel fuel filter

this all should be changed every 40.000 miles.

And every 10.000 miles* just the oil with the filter.

*this is recommended if you do short rides or tow a trailer. If you drive mostly on motorway, you can change the oil according to the automatic service interval calculated by the car.

@mep - I wouldn't feel the laughing stock if I were you - like any car they all give bother regardless of make, VAG cars have some serious faults (as much as I like them) 2.0 tdi oil pump failures, VOSA injector recalls - 2.0T GTi timing chain failures on mk6 golfs - but it wouldn't put me off one - they may get cheap servicing but they also have a timing belt and water pump every 4yrs/60k which is big enough money, which the 220d doesn't have - taking that into account it all evens out over a longish ownership period IMO

I had a slight noise and I thought it could be dmf but decided to change gearbox oil as the sound was coming from a similar area and I now have a quieter gearbox and the noise is noticeably quieter so so far the problem seems to have cured itself also my car has done 121000 miles

I've had my 220d for a year now with no issue but would be curious if there is now a SMF replacement to the DMF, also if the same parts fit from the is250 etc for higher rated clutches (I'm running over 400lbft of torque now)
