so my o/s/f brake dust guard is about to fall off and im in way deeper then i thought with this worn old beast. il get there! looks like the guard goes on before the bearing assembly. And as for the rusty state id be surprised if i got the old one off anyway.

i know i probably shouldnt but could i live without it? obviously id have to clean down there a bit more.

any comments?

thanks.

p.s when i get this car up to scratch im deleting my silly problem posts and pretending they never existed!

I replaced them on my old mk1 GS300 without a full dismantle, although you will need to remove the disc. The main problem is if the little bolts that hold the shield to the hub ALL shear off. If only one or two do, you can sort it out as there are still enough left to hold the replacement shield in place. Take it real slow and careful getting them off - pre soak with penetrating oil etc and obviously keep oil and stuff well clear of the discs and pads.

Basically, get the little retaining bolts out. Use some tin snips to cut through the old shield, with one cut on either side, you can then easily get the two halves out. In worst case scenario, you can get away without it, but it is better to have them. For the replacement, cut just one slot. You can then bend the shield open, i.e. bend each side of the cut in the opposite direction to each other, you can then wangle it around and get it in place over the hub. Bend it straight again and fit the retaining bolts. Once it is all done up, do any final bending to get the shield straight again. You do end up with a cut in the shield, but a whole lot less work than a full dismantle.

Hi mate.

My O/S/F guard also almost fell off and was catching on the disc.it was that loose that when i jacked the car up to investigate the noise it fell off as i grabbed it.

my mate who used to be a lexus tech said it wont be a problem as its quite a big job to replace.

mine fell of last autumn and all seems ok.

cheers Karl

Happened to me on my LS, tried for new one, no longer available.

Have them in the USA for twenty dollars plus post, but this company won't post outside the US.

I got mine off without removing the hub by cutting it as suggested, one bolt sheared behind the hub. [so I couldn't drill it out.]

Luckily the centre that fits over the hub was repairable. I welded new metal up to it, [not very elegant, but it's only a shield].

To refit, I cut a wide slot in the centre and slid it over the hub, right to left.

When fitted it just touched the disc, pushed it back, been fine ever since.

Not as bad a job as it sounds, but leave it till summer!
