Steering Rack; How Easy To Remove And Replace?

Recommended Posts

The PAS fluid is costing me a small fortune so its time to send the car down the road (scrap) or repair it.

There are a couple of second hand racks on eBay (new one from the dealers is £1,264 + vat, and thats after a discount).

I am handy at "spinning the spanners" but im wondering how to go about replacing the rack. It looks like a pig of a job. Any tips?????

My main worry is getting the steering shaft out of the rack; the part with the universal jointpost-26509-0-04566100-1366553200_thumb.j??

No. I replaced that a couple of years back. Its leaking at the rack, just where the steering shaft enters it. just above those 2 pipes in the picture there is a rubber boot where the shaft goes in; its running out of there.

I have broken an LS400, and I am breaking another, getting the rack off is not the end of the world. Not easy, but very do-able. Just takes a bit of time and effort...... which is probably why a stealer would charge a lot of labour to do it.

Mine is a MK-3, so I dont know if it would fit your year.

Have a look on LEXLS, there could be some good information there.

Simon, the dealer price is supply only, it doesnt include fitting. There are a couple eBay for about £50 so ill go with one of those.

That is, if the stuff i put in at the weekend doesnt work. Ive put some of that leak sealer in it. Which is probably dribbling out as i type this.
