hi to all u die hard lexus fanatics out their,this is my first post so not sure what i'm doing,i have a strange problem with my ls400 m4,on turning on the egnition the pasenger wing mirror moves out a touch and a touch more every time i turn on the egnition until the mirror has turned completly away from the door,to correct it i have to press the botton that folds the mirrors in and reset,why would any power be sent to the mirrors on egnition,thanks in advance for your help,this is my thired ls400,best car in the world.

Your mirror ecu as been corrupted at some time and needs resetting take out the fuse that services the circuit for the mirrors after you have switched on the ignition tnen turn off the ignition replace the fuse and turn on the ignition reset the mirror position following the normal procedure.

We are a friendly bunch and on top of that some are very knowledgeable people all are helpful and only to glad to help a fellow member in trouble. I cant help with this problem but I see Ambermarine seems to have got the answer for you.

I have got the same issue on my MK4, and never thought to see if it is the mirror moving when ignition coming on. I have problem with driver side, but most times I fold the mirrors - so never been bothered to find out what was problem

Anyway I will go play tomorrow and see if same issue as you, and try the same trick.

As for the Lexus and strange problems, all problems are strange (in my view) but someone has usually got an answer, and a heck of a lot less goes wrong with a 400 then any other car I have ever owned.

Someone once said a Lexus is a Jag that does not break down!

Also worth finding a local Lexus expert you can chat with, i am about to try one out in Swindon for Cam Belt change, recommended by another club member.

thank u,great response all ready, will try the reset when we get a dryer day,i take it the fuse is under the bonnet, i have picked up so much from this forum,the first time this happened i tried to correct mirror manually,this a no,no, must use the button to fold them in and mike will try and make it to the next meet,regards to all members,

Hi

According to the electrical manual there are two fuses protecting the mirrors position control, the horn fuse which is in the engine bay fuse box and the radio no2 fuse which is in the fuse box under the steering column(drivers footwell).You will probably have two reset your radio code if you remove the radio no2, fuse make sure you have the code before removing the fuse.

The fuse for the horn is connection 29 that fuse is the last in the row of 15 above the row of four counting left to right.

The radio no2 fuse in the cabin fuse box is the third fuse in fourth row at the end of the box it is counted from the edge where there are three fusible links in a row.

i think you access the code on the screen of sat nav,i think you have to set a code manually,in the menu you can access it to see if code is set,i think most have not been set,im sure is in the sat nav handbook about it

If you have ever disconnected the Battery from the car and reconnected it if the radio and satnav code have been set the screen will prompt you to enter the code, usually 4 digits.If your radio and satnav work normally after reconnection then I assume that a code as not been set but if it as had a code set it is a real hassle re-setting the radio security system.

I had a new Battery fitted by Toyota a few weeks ago, they asked me if I had a radio code and I said I don't think so. The fact that it's all OK suggests I don't have one set.

IIRC you can disable the code for such things as a reset or Battery replacement but you do need the code to uncode if you see what I mean.

If the fuse method does not work which it probably will you can disconnect and then reconnect the door ecu ( yes being a Lexus it has an ECU in each door!).

I don't suppose you know where I would find the driver's door ECU?

I had a series IV a while ago with mirror adjustment problems in this case no adjustment at all and found by disconnecting the drivers door ECU,leaving it a while then reconnecting it the problem was sorted.

To access the ECU you will need to remove the interior door card ( tutorial in the Lexus guides section) and the ECU is located below the mirror.

No guarantees in your case but worth a try for 20 minutes of effort.

I have had no end of trouble with my driver's door folding mirror on my 1998 LS400 (Mk IV).  Changed the mirror ecu in the door  and ended up blowing fuses and knocking out the telescopic tilt on the steering wheel and the electric window stopped working - nightmare! You have to match the part no exactly and I can't seem to find the  right one.  BE VERY CAREFUL.  I've had to replace tilt/telescope ecu as the wrong door ecu messed everything up!  Took it to Lexus Canterbury and they have said that I need a new motor so have advised that I get another door mirror assembly.  What do you guys think?  I have tried taking the relevant fuses out with the ignition on and nothing has solved the problem. As soon as I turn the key to 'acc' the whole door mirror unit clicks back one notch and just keeps doing it each time I turn the key, until the assembly is facing completely out.  Fold the mirrors in with the button and then put them back out again and the mirror assembly returns back to normal position. This is driving me nuts.  Does anyone have any other suggestions other than the ones that I have tried?  Is the problem the actual folding motor in the door mirror assembly?  Grrrr

Hi Nigel and welcome to the LOC, we are a friendly bunch and some of us even know how to pull them to bits and put them back together again, with of course the one bolt and washer left over.

I cant help with your present queries but I'm sure someone will be along ASAP.

Yep done all that - the usual standard stuff ;-))

 

I have wasted time and effort on this niggling problem.  Bought a telescope motor that I didn’t need, various ecus that I didn’t need and so on.  I now have access to a door mirror assembly but we need to pay for that and have it sprayed to match the car.  Don’t want further expense if it’s not going to solve the problem.  This appears to be a known problem and I am surprised the Lexus don’t have an advisory note on this.  Get on really well with Lexus Canterbury.  Service Manager is Anna and she is absolutely outstanding!  But…not sure about the advice to buy a new mirror assembly so wanted to check it out with you guys.  Any Lexus owners in Canterbury area should no about Anna as she is exceptional in the customer care she provides and the pricing is very reasonable.  Can’t recommend them highly enough.  They are very happy to look after my 'Vintage Lexus' as they call it ;-))  I don't let anyone else near it.

hi nigel,i started this thread well over two years ago,in my case i decided to live with the mirror issue as it was a quick press of the fold mirror's button, well twice to reset job done,welcome to the LOC, jimmy

Hi David.  If you decide to pay them a visit tell Anna that I mentioned the dealership to you on this website, she would be thrilled to have a response.  She works very hard and so any praise is very well received.  The parts dept down the road at Toyota Motorline is also outstanding.  They helped me with a new Y piece exhaust recently, had to have it sent over from Japan as no pattern ones available.  I did consider having one made in stainless but they can be very noisy - not what a Lexus should be!  Had the usual problem of the flange joins between the 'cats' and the centre section corroding.  Had new flanges put on the cats and a new centre section exhaust - job done!  

Thanks for the welcome Jimmy.  Was speaking to a local luxury car specialist recently, here in Canterbury.  One of his customers has a Silver Spur and wants it to be as quiet as his LS400 but so far hasn't managed to match it.  How's that for a story!  Incidentally he also had THREE Aston Martin Lagondas in when I paid him a visit.  I've never seen one let alone three at once!

Nigel hi, I was just buying replacement wiper rubbers from them only yesterday .......... £ 21.20 incl vat ............  but they do last 4 years and 50k miles !

Yours must be a later Ls400 then with folding mirrors, thankfully mine don't.

I have taken each of my 3 Ls400s ( Mk1, then my Mk2 and for 4.5 years now my Mk3 ) to a mechanic in Margate for 8+ years now, Rob, and he has kept them going fantastically well and at minimal cost too.........  nearly at 183k miles

He welded my blowing exhaust years ago and it's stayed fine since then ok ........  about £30.

I'm not saying cease going to Lexus Canterbury but I do know he has saved me £££££££s over the years and my car is always in tip top nick ( mechanically wise ) and I don't hesitate to drive across europe every year, 5/6,000 miles or so with nothing other than a normal full service beforehand.

The later LS400 mirrors have a small PCB ( electronics board) inside the motor casing, this has 2 Hall sensors which detect both the vertical and horizontal position of the mirror glass,these detectors rely on a small cylindrical magnet on each axis for reference.

Over time dirt can enter the plastic tube these magnets move in so preventing their movement the ECU then tries to reset and the result is a random movement of the mirror glass.

If you're brave enough you can actually strip the mirror down and clean the guts to cure the problem.
