I just bought my lexus few days ago. I wanted to change the oil in the engine, but previous owner dont know what oil did the service station put in. I know that it suppose to be 5w30, but my engine has 127000 miles at the moment, so I dont want to risk it. If I will put semi synthetic 10w40 Valvoline maxlife oil for the engines with higher millage. Would that damage the engine? thx

Brand names don't mean a lot mate^

For example people say not to use Halfords own brand oil. Now I'm pretty sure Halfords do not have their own oil refinery. So by going on the number/letter codes on the bottle the oil can be traced back to a major company such as Mobil or shell etc....

The point is it's far more important to look at the grade if oil and the spec that it meets rather than relying on brand names or lack of :)

Ive noticed on my service history it sometimes had 10w40 on some occasions. it wont do any damage if you switch it up, but i stick to 5w30 now.

Talking of brand names i also use valvoline syn power and was thinking the same but ive read somewhere recently that with the brand names such as edge or mobil1 you dont get that clattering when the engines cold on a morning

An is200 is compatible with 15W 40 and 5W 30. The first 2 numbers are viscosity in cold weather i.e lower that number better flow rate in cold conditions. So basically the 10W40 will flow better when cold than the15. However both the 10 and 15W40 have better hot temp range than the 5W30. Depends on where you live you select your oil on its operating conditions. You might want to change to 5W30 for winter and 10W40 for summer.
