Just Hit A Kerb

Hi Guys.

I lost control on this morning on the schools run. The road was pretty frosty and when i attempted to press the brakes the car slide and hit the other side of the kerb really badly. I manged to drop my kid of to school but when driving back the steering wheel was not straight.

When I finally got home i realized that the alloy was badly damaged and the actual wheel itself was not straight. The other 3 wheels are OK though. Please see the pics.

Is this an easy job to fix?

Sorry mate, especially at this time of year, nasty, you will most likely need another wheel(will be cheaper than having damaged one fixed if at all possible),although you could use spare for now if you got one, lower arm replaced and geometry done too :-(

would you know where i can get from one and how much it would cost?

i can have a quick look when im on my computer next. Notsure if the part is only oem or after markets are avail. If oem you'd have to go to a dealer but a car this old i would get on frpm a breaker personally but that just my opinion. So eBay

Have a look at the lower-arm before you go buying parts. The arm in question is the bottom one bolted to the hub/ centre of the wheel.

Since the camber position is positive the arm should be bowed where it meets the cross-member? In addition look at the pick-up points where the upper wishbone is mounted just in case it's been pulled away.

From the picture it looks like the toe ( longitudinal ) position is reasonably ok so the lateral link/s should be fine.

Psi as above but are also stated in your manual. For a basic refurb in a generic silver is about 50 quid a wheel. More if you want a better finish. You would get a discount doing all 4

  • 1 month later...

hi guys i know it been a while, but i managed to get my car (by driving it) to my local japaenese specialist. JAPEX in Herts. They have had a look and told me that it cant be repaired at there place and it has to go to a speicalist bodyshop. It may cost well over £1k to be repaired. they also told me that apart from the damage the car is a good car and up - to - date with servicing etc. Do you think i should get it repaired. The only thing he told me was that everthing underneath seems to be twisted and will be more then replaceing just an arm.

Im in two minds whether to scrap it or not.

Blimey sounds like you have twisted the chassis! At what speed did you hit the kerb?

If it's as bad as they say it will need jigging to straighten out the chassis and then there's no guarantee the car will ever run straight again.
