Sorry guys i brought up a 530d in my original post as this is where it got me thinking. didnt mean to bring any confrontation into it. but no i certainly did not buy a Lexus for speed racing! im guessing the only people who did are IS-F owners!

For me German diesels and all other diesel sold in this country are built with one purpose in mind and thats MPG, and thats all their good at imo. The reason i said sold in this country is because there are real diesels out there built for power and thats when the fun starts :)

ide take a cummins any day of the week

We will let you off with the BMW slip up.......But are you sure you want the highlighted comment on a family forum... :whistling::whistling:

I have never owned a diseasel car and probably never will. For me diseasel's belong in Trucks and Vans.

I can see why people have them of course for MPG but like everyone has mostly pointed out they come with there problems.

I do hear a lot of things about the Merc (Bluetec) engine having all sorts of problems as my friend works in a dealers but they do tend not to publicise it. I am not singling Mercs out here just merely an example.

Just my three penneth worth.

Luckily I don't use my car a lot so fuel doesn't bother me , I have my van I use daily .

My car is something for me if you know what I mean ,

I only do maybe 30 miles a week in it .

I do like older cars , I'm not a lover of the new is etc but prob will grow on me .

And yes I would much rather have something I loved that done less miles to the gallon than a heap that does 50 to the gallon.

Let's be honest, none of us would have bought a Lexus if mpg had been at the top of the list when buying a car. So, whether we went for looks, driveability, build quality, performance, snob value or a combination of things, I imagine we were all happy to trade that off against a few extra trips to the gas station. Enjoy your Lexus - its worth it!

I have a diesel Nissan x-trail to drive while my RX is getting its bumper put back together. It seems bigger on the outside than the RX, but smaller on the inside! You couldn't call it a refined diesel, it sounds like a van. And very plastic and budget inside. Despite what must be a small Diesel engine to make it so slow it's thirstier than the bigger engined RX. It's easy to forget how different a Lexus is until you can't drive yours. Looking forward to getting mine back.

Two things (well three when you factor in the reliability thing) that made me want to pick up an IS was it's looks (always liked them from when I first remember them coming out) and the handling. Car might not be fast, but it handles extremely well for it's size and weight. So does the E46 BM mind, but I still prefer the IS over the E46...

But I know exactly what the OP is getting at. If the IS was fast, the MPG and stupidly high tax would be overlooked, or if it was slow but got great MPG, it's performance would be overlooked. But to have poor performance AND poor economy - you just can't put it on paper as a good car!

I still like mine though; nicest car I've ever owned. Still enjoy driving it, and it's never a chore. So still get's the thumbs up from me

I like driving a thirsty lexus because I like emitting carbon dioxide. (the other gasses are an unfortunate by product)

Well someone needs to feed the trees!

for me it has to be the looks, the sound, the engine, reliability and more.

you tell me of any one other 4 door cars from around the 2000 mark that looks as modern the lexus is200 1st gen looks?

it is still to this day a very modern looking car with sleek designed lines.

i love my newly swapped lexus is200 and i love the petrol station just as much!

lets say you do 10k a year in either petrol or diesel, whats the difference in fuel cost, (someone else can do the maths lol) lets say is300 and bmw 330d, the bmw will prob cost more to buy,

so the way I see it is diesels are getting more expensive to buy because you save in fuel costs, so unless your doing 30k miles a year then the petrol would proberly work out cheaper,

I don't know if that makes sence, im reading it and I know what I mean lol, and im gonna post anyway

petrol for low miles diesel for people who live in there car.

I've thought about getting a modern diesel but I don't think I'd ever own a common rail one no matter who makes it unless it had a warranty or someone else was going to be paying for repairs?

Also most don't get anywhere near the quoted mpg figures. One of my work colleagues has a 2012 A5 2.0tdi and that has averaged just 39mpg since new on the readout, it is an auto mind but still way under the 56mpg or whatever it was quoted by vag. Even on a steady run to france it only got mid 40s?

Ive also never come across any 530d's or any other of the bm 3L's that will do 50mpg in real life?

I owned a 520d m sport, and the ecomomy was great, but doing no more than 8k miles a year it didn't add up

I now have an is250

I love both cars, but they are hard to compare, each has its good and bad, I love the gizmos in the is, the comfort and silence, i must admit the lack of 3 blink indicators drives me nuts {ie you flick the indicator stalk and get 3 blinks) but thats just a fussy nerdy moan!

The 520 was a great car to drive and rode hard (m sport) the pling plong noise that told of seat belts, low fuel etc drove me mad lol

But as I said hard to say which was better, so totally different

So just love the car you have currently!

For the record I owned 2 different Mk 2 Escorts and loved them! God knows why

I drive a 32 ton truck all day with a big torque engine but I can't wait to get in my Lexus for the luxury and quiet , I would never consider a diesel car I just would not, another thing is are they not considered as a major polluter to our wonderful planet.....oh did I mention that I love my Lexus....I would have to agree about the Cummins engine though, used to drive 2000 miles a week in my ERF truck with a 210 cummins engine and it never missed a beat...

My reasons are -

1) Petrol refinement beats a diesel anytime, anywhere, any day of the week.

2) Diesel's have a lot of torque, hence you never need to hit redline which is pretty boring to be honest and doesn't give you the same kind of experience as a petrol

3) The engine is super smooth, its silky silky smooth. Cant say the same thing about any diesel ive driven, probably because they all have turbos

4) Petrol sounds better

5) I have a lead foot and im still getting 30mpg in my RX. If I bought a diesel Audi Q7, id probably still be getting the same mpg anyway.

6) Petrol feels more luxurious. NVH levels are so low that its spooky. It just feels more premium than a diesel.

7) For someone like me who only does 10k miles a year mainly in town - DPF's ARE A PAIN!!!!!!!!!!

8) Having owned a Merc and and Audi Diesel before - they dont get anywhere near the MPG advertised. 23mpg on a 45mpg Merc, 30mpg on a 50mpg Audi.

Oh just to add this, was sat at the traffic lights with the windows open in total silence (yes my engine was running!) and a new 520d pulled alongside, as refined as they are they still rattle like a london cab! The lights changed and I pulled away silently and smoothly. Thats why I like my thirsty lexus lol

Horses for courses?...the cars that made me realise how good diesel could be were an e39 530 d m-sport manual and a volvo s80 d5...both were acceptable quick, easily turned over 40 mpg, the volvo nearer 50mpg, and the bmw had few compromises as a drivers car....grippy, taut, punchy....but did either of these much more expensive cars compare to my ls400...no, no, NO....the ls isn't just about its remarkable engine, it's about a tactile integrity, a feeling, the knowledge that you are driving a car that was built to the highest standard possible and hang the price....and I have owned almost 200 cars and the ls is the first to give me that feeling....
