Question On Usb Ports And Mp3 Playing..

Recommended Posts

Hello all,

Not been on here for a while! New IS300h F-Sport turned up on Friday, and I seem to have a problem with my USB ports.

I've stuck some MP3s on a 64GB stick and whacked it into the ports.. (1 and 2). Nothing happens.. I navigate to Audio >> Sources and can see USB 1 and USB 2 both still grey. They never light up.

I've removed all manner of non-MP3 crap from the stick, so all that remains is basically 8 or so folders containing the music itself, and maybe one other folder containing a few work-related applications. I can remove the apps, too.. but I'm yet to see a USB port on a car that couldn't cope with a few non-compatible file formats. Surely it just won't list them, nor attempt to play them?

Any ideas? Stuck with Bluetooth audio at the mo.

Thanks very much :)

What file format is your USB Stick? I think it will have to be Fat32 to be recognised.

This is from the USB section of the manual:

Compatible device formats
The following device format can be used:
• USB communication format: USB2.0 FS (480 Mbps)
• File system format: FAT16/32 (Windows)
• Correspondence class: Mass storage class
MP3, WMA and AAC files written to a device with any format other than
those listed above may not play correctly, and their file names and folder
names may not be displayed correctly.
Items related to standards and limitations are as follows:
• Maximum directory hierarchy: 8 levels
• Maximum number of folders in a device: 3000 (including the root)
• Maximum number of files in a device: 9999
• Maximum number of files per folder: 255
 MP3, WMA and AAC files
MP3 (MPEG Audio LAYER 3) is a standard audio compression format.
Files can be compressed to approximately 1/10 of their original size using MP3
compression.
WMA (Windows Media Audio) is a Microsoft audio compression format. This
format compresses audio data to a size smaller than that of the MP3 format.
AAC is short for Advanced Audio Coding and refers to an audio compression
technology standard used with MPEG2 and MPEG4.
MP3, WMA and AAC file and media/formats compatibility are limited.
 MP3 file compatibility
• Compatible standards
MP3 (MPEG1 AUDIO LAYERIII, MPEG2 AUDIO LAYERIII)
• Compatible sampling frequencies
MPEG1 AUDIO LAYERIII: 32, 44.1, 48 (kHz)
MPEG2 AUDIO LAYERIII: 16, 22.05, 24 (kHz)
• Compatible bit rates (compatible with VBR)
MPEG1 AUDIO LAYERIII: 32-320 (kbps)
MPEG2 AUDIO LAYERIII: 8-160 (kbps)
• Compatible channel modes: stereo, joint stereo, dual channel and monaural

I did exactly the same thing!! Forgot I had been using it on a Windows 7 PC and had formatted to NTFS. Reformatted to FAT32 and worked a treat right away.

OK, well this fills me with hope.. BUT... having formatted the stick and set the file system to exFAT, (FAT32 isn't an option)... and loading it up with a selection of newly acquired MP3s, I'm still seeing nothing but grey USB 1 and USB 2 :|

When you say you formatted it to FAT32, Ross... I'm assuming this was via usual Win 7 methods?

I had to stop and re-read your original post and realised you are using a 64gb usb disk - windows is now too clever and only gives you an option of exFAT or NTFS with this size of USB disk in Disk Manager. :megaangry:

You will need to resort to DOS commands, or a 3rd party application to format it as FAT32, or get a 32gb or smaller thumb drive.

FAT32 is the only format that the Lexus will recognize.

Google - 64gb USB FAT32 format - there are many options open to you.

I did wonder if 64GB would be an issue.... so it seems it is, but not for the reason I was thinking.

DOS it is... thanks very much, Steve.... I won't tell you what it is I do for a living ;)

Any suggestions???

PS plays fine in my sons Alfa (Blue&Me).

I have Lexus RX 350 2018 with 2 USB ports for MP3 flash drives.

Question: how do I select USB or USB2 using screen?

Im not familiar with the RX, but in the IS select Audio and you should get a list of sources, some will be greyed out of there is nothing connected but USB1 and USB2 should be there

Holy thread resurrection Batman!

I'm trying to view photos (don't ask) in the car. They're on a FAT32 stick. There are some mp3 files which the car can read and play, but it won't see the photos. Any ideas anyone please?

Edit - it sees the mp3 files in the root, but no photos in the root, or even the folder which some more photos are in. I'm confused.

I have used a 128GB USB drive, that was formatted to FAT32 to play music on my IS 300H, with no problems.

Used my MacBook to format to FAT32.

Having said that, lately both my USB ports do not function. Does not recognise my USB Drive or my Iphone which is connected to via USB. It used to work fine, but has stopped working completely.
