Warped Hubs?

In the ongoing saga of my front brake judder we have come to the conclusion that the NSF hub must be distorted.

The garage(very dependable) have fitted new calipers and sliders, new pads and are now fitting the 7th disc(2 osf and 5 nsf).

To recap, brakes are fine for about 250-300 miles after the nsf disc is changed then the judder reappears.

Is there anything else it could be before i bite the bullet and order a hub???

Mike, at last someone has the same problem as me!!

My is300 has had 6 NSF discs, have fitted new brake pads (3 times) rebuilt caliper and carrier, wheel bearing replaced, flexi brake hose replaced with no joy. I was thinking along the same lines myself but will take a chance on a "used" hub.

I really cannot find anything else that could cause the disc to warp, mechanics have had the car up on ramps and have checked all ball joints etc etc, but have no idea of the cause. Previous owner may have whacked a kerb or even another car hitting the wheel/hub, who knows...but I reckon that changing the hub assembly is the next step.

My mechanic is really good and that was his opinion.

I also phoned my mate in Southampton who has been a main dealer mechanic for 25 years and also spanners on a 520bhp escort cosworth at the weekend for another friend, he said that although he hadn't seen the car from the description i gave him in his opinion it could only be the hub that is at fault : (

I have had the same problem also. I came to the same conclusion as my symptoms started after hitting a pretty bad pothole.

Caliper rebuild and 2 sets of discs later, I bought one of these and put a new bearing in at the same time.

Ebay Hub/Flange & Bearing Kit

My judder decreased to a minimum! Can still feel it as I have yet to renew the discs again. 3rd set of discs going on next month.

Hopefully will help you out

Great post Billy, this has been an ongoing expensive problem since i bought the car,, every one reckoned the caliper war the cause, even though it has been stripped and rebuilt twice without finding any thing wrong with it.

The hub/bearing kit you got from fleabay i assume is not genuine Lexus, was there any problems with fitting etc?

I cant say it will cure your problem, but as I to had exhausted all possible problems with calipers etc I changed the flange and it was a massive improvement even with warped discs still on the car.

I bought it from that very supplier. Its not genuine, but did fit fine and I bought a genuine wheel bearing rather than the one he is offering with the flange. He does sell the flange on its own if you want to shop around for your own bearing kit.

Good luck!

Just sorted this out with my mechanic, decided to get a genuine Lexus hub as it doesn't cost much more at £102+vat and will go for a BluePrint bearing which is about £60+vat. (this will be the 3rd bearing on that side this year) I will have to get another disc as well, hopefully for the last time!!

I know that this is a bit of a gamble, but the car is worth it.. or so i keep on telling myself..

1st one was a BluePrint bearing, but because there was this bearing/grinding noise after fitted, i insisted the garage change it for a genuine Lexus one but the noise was still there! so i've been trying to find out the cause of that and the warping disc , so the hub seems a safe bet as it's the only thing that touches the bearing and would cause the disc to run untrue..

Sure does mate, like with all my cars, they have to be perfect..if not then whats the point? Will not let this problem ruin what should be a perfect car.

Used hubs are a big gamble as the bearings have to be changed at the same time, and the warped disc...the only way to eliminate the hub is to fit a new one.

The run out tolerance on a hub is 0.5.

They are complete hub assemblies so no need for bearing swaps.

Guarenteed 'Good' from a trusted source and the pair were £30 less than 1 new flange and bearing so i made the decision that it was worth a punt.

I'm going to fit the pair of hubs and a pair of my used discs that have be skimmed on my lathe at work to a tolerence of 0.025mm.

As i say here's hoping

We must have the same car! You commented on my old post about strange noises that you had as well and now iv got the same problem you mention above! took the car to WIM the other week to have the alignment done, also asked them to check the other problems (wobble when braking and that sort of wheel wobble noise/bearing, they didn't know what was causing any of the noises but said it could possibly be Hubs, maybe something to change in the new year!

cars only done 42K and WIM said the underneath looks really good for its age. im determined to find this noise and stop the wobble even if it means getting ripped off by Lexus!

I checked the run out on my new Lexus OEM disks and it was 3 times the tolerance. Maximum run out is .035 mm (yes, that tiny). Mine was .12

I then took the discs off and found corrosion on the hub - tiny but by the time you measure the run out 1cm in from the outer edge of the disc it gets multiplied. So, I spent some time cleaning the hubs up, put the discs back on and lo! run out is now within tolerance. Braking at speed is now wobble free. Next up is a full alignment. WIM is too far for me so I've found this place:

Well after having new hub/bearing/disc fitted last month, it is still not spinning within tolerance. My mechanic reckoned the problem could be with the hub carrier itself, possibly slightly bent, so have just ordered a used complete hub/knuckle assembly from fleabay.

Will get mechanic to put this unit on and see if that runs straight! ...complete pain in the backside!!(and wallet)

Problem(s) will show up after 7-800 miles, well, does on mine!

Got that second hand hub/knuckle assembly from eBay today, not bad for £25... getting it fitted with yet another pair of discs this Saturday..
