Update on progress

Have made new steel engine mounts to lower the engine 20mm and move back by 20mm. Now the gearbox mount lines up to the original mounting bracket holes. If I made a 2nd set of mounts I would move another 10mm back and 10mm lower again.

At the moment I have 20mm clearance over the power steering. I will have to put a small dent in the sump for clearance at the front side of the sub-frame.

Have made short shifter kit to move gearlever forward by 30mm to suit new location.

Engine and box now back in the car and bolted up. Gearbox required some panel beating in the tunnel on the RH side of the box. This was easy - the Lexus seems to be made from tin foil. Gearbox now fits right up with the standard mount and no packers.

Have more photos but can't publish them. Have left message on forum asking for help as to why I can't publish at all. Then can send in more photos.

Progress Update

Wasn't totally happy with the previous motor position so I moved motor again to the ultimate position - back as far as posible with about 15mm clearance at the back and 12mm over the sub-frame. This gives me the most clearance possible at the front so I can now fit all the standard IS200 fans. Looks much better with the engine right back. Should also be better weight transfer. Had to cut some of the sump to clear so have lost some oil capacity. Will just have to fill it slightly deeper to compensate.

Of course now I had to make another shorter shifter arrangement for the gearbox but overall fits into position much better. This has allowed me to lift the gearbox higher at the rear as the shifter now fits up into the high part of the tunnel.

As this is the final position now I can order custom tailshaft to suit this location.

Have made a new aluminium computer case (complete with lots of heat sinks) to mount both the Autronic and the IS200 computers together and fit into the standard mounting box.

Have compiled a spreadsheet file that contains all wires for the 1JZGTE, Lexus computer, Autronic computer and CDI unit. It takes hours to trace all the wiring. List takes up 18 pages of A4 size printout. Now I just have to match them all up!!!!! Each wire has to connect to something so will end up with about 9 pages of matched pairs of wiring. Still chasing some of the VVTi technical information to make sure that part still functions.

Have decided to control the traction control by Autronic computer so have ordered a few more parts from Autronic to allow me to do this.

Ran heavy power cable from alternator to Battery as alternator now on the wrong side of the car.

Mounted CDI unit under mudguard under the headlight - in a cool dry place away from the engine heat.

Designed and ordered custom intercooler to fit exact space available and waiting for that to arrive.

Re-plumbed power steering and heater hoses for new engine location.

Just a lot of small items that all take time to do.

I just keep telling myself that it will all be worth it.

This sounds so cool, whats the expected power output?

Are you keeping dimensions and drawing of all the parts you have made so you could repeat this again? could be a good thing to sell (a complete book of drawings and instructions?)

amazing work so far.

Expected output in standard form is approx 230kW if I can get the VVTi functioning. Still chasing some of the technical data on the electronic side of that. There is a Toyota training manual in the US that has specific data but it is not available in Australia. Have sent emails to a few contacts in US but no replies yet.

Like my last 1JZ project I have kept lots of diagrams, sketches and drawings as I go.

Update time - just spent two weeks holiday working on the car.

Removed engine again to finish mounting and wiring everything in the engine bay and run cables into the interior as well. Mounted idle speed control valve and boost control valves with integrated wiring.

Fitted all new sensors to engine including additional Autronic sensors and incorporated all wiring into original factory loom. Engine fitted with dual sensors to run VVTi function from Lexus computer and everything else from Autronic computer. I don't want to risk any interference between the two systems.

Fitted heater water transfer pipes to swap sides for the heater connections.

Had custom tailshaft made to suit the Getrag. This was made using all Land Cruiser parts to keep with the Toyota origin. Shortened the gear change mechanism to make it fit exactly in centre of console hole. Stripped all auto wiring from harness and wired gearbox speed sensor and reverse switch incorporated into existing wiring harness.

Had Custom Intercooler manufactured to fit the limited space. Ended up with Bar & Plate intercooler made by ARE in Brisbane. They did an excellent job and came complete with flow testing results of unit.

Fitted intercooler into place with necessary support brackets. Intercooler also supports bonnet catch at the top. Had to remount air-conditioning core higher to give me clearance over the intercooler outlet pipes.

Made combined cable harness for Autronic and Lexus computers all fitted into standard computer case. Wired up 18 core cable from CDI to engine.

Purchased second reluctor interface to wire up traction control to Autronic as well.

Motor & gearbox now fitted back into car for final time.

Items left to complete:

Wire computer harness to 1JZ harness

Wire traction control

Plumb intercooler piping

Sort out VVTi functions (that is why engine has dual sensors fitted)

Exhaust system

Would love a job doing this all the time but I supposed it would be like all jobs - good for a few years then you look for a change.

Yes, have a very busy two weeks. Will have to go back to work for a while to build up the bank balance again - it took a fair hammering the last two weeks. This hobby is expensive to continue with. Wife calls the garage the Toy Shop - its full of expensive toys.
