  1. I drove a friend's brand new BMW, M135i, - nice V6, twin turbo - brand new car, new car smell etc etc, - compared to my 12 year old dinosaur. Anyway, it was a lovely car to drive, very "nippy", obviously, - but again, I wouldn't swap it for my LS430, - which is a much, much nicer place to be, - so much smoother. If my air suspension failed, I wouldn't replace it with coilovers... I'd replace it with Air, - I love my air suspension, it's characteristic of the car

  2. Most, if not all,Tyres have been allocated a db rating and this is often ignored by purchasers. Low ratings (69?db) coupled with the purchase of good quality tyres, on cars with exemplary build quality (Lexus) has a wonderful effect on the ambient noise level. Regards John

  3. If your sensible there won't be any lasting damage. Without air in the struts, when a wheel bottom outs on a pothole or bump, the top of the strut hits a heavy duty plasticy/rubbery bung designed for taking knocks. The longest journey I did was from Windsor to Dorset with mine playing up, all you can do is avoid as many bumps as you can! The worst bit with a bad strut is that it feels like the tracking is off and the car pulls to the left or right, increased tyre wear and the car feels less sure footed when braking or going around tight turns, so leave plenty of space between you and other cars.   4. I believe the air suspension issue is less common than it's made out to be. If it does need replacing the cost is around £950 to fit conventional springs. Given the low prices that the LS430 can be bought for, and the way preventative measures for other possible failures can be taken care of for relatively low cost, I think the LS430 eclipses the LS400. Earlier this year I went back to an LS400, and although it clearly has its merits, the LS430 is a beautifully engineered machine, which in my opinion is superior. I speak as someone who has owned three LS400's and two LS430's. Just my thoughts.

  5. Hi John, Wow, that's some mileage there :) Those error codes can easily be triggered if one or more air struts are leaking air. Not something you will find out using a non-Toyota/Lexus code scanner tho (Techstream). Whereabouts are you located in the country? If you could call around and find a mobile techie that can read all the codes then they can tell you which (if any) struts are not holding air; I saw on eBay a seller is currently selling new air struts for about 33% cheaper than Lexus, if that helps... I had exactly the same symptoms as you and turned out to be a moderate leak in the near side rear strut and a smaller leak on the offside front strut, I was able to change both using a socket set, vice grips and the RX jack (and £3 fuel line release tool set from eBay) on my driveway. The reason the compressor codes are thrown is if the compressor runs continually for more than 30secs without the height of the car stabilising within preset parameters - the car computer disables the compressor to protect it from over-heating and throws the codes. Erasing the codes (or disconnecting the battery for 15-30mins) is a quick way to clear the codes and enables the compressor to run again until the computer shuts it off to protect it - this is the easiest test you can perform to see if the compressor is still good. When I did as nursing mine along, I'd reset the codes, start the car and count to 15, then using the hidden button under the steering wheel, disable the air suspension for 3 seconds and then re-enable it (trying to avoid going beyond the 30 second limit) this allowed me to get some ride quality back for short trips until I got all the parts to do the strut change. Fortunately I had access to Techstream to help diagnose which struts were to blame; but once you have air back in the system you can usually tell which corners are sagging... Good luck!   6. Hi all just put 4 Michelin cross climate tyres on the rx450, too early to tell anything yet but I'll let you all know in a week or two. Paid £615 for all four fitted, I think that was a good price, what do you guys think??

Guys, being on here more often these past two weeks and whiling away some of my twilight hours here in Delhi ............. the TWO major issues very common to the Lexus Forums seem to be AIR SUSPENSION and DPF OIL FILTER and diesel engines. Essentially, Lexus probably should never have tried to develop a diesel engine and for heaven's sake, the Air Suspension is a woe right across the different Lexus models and the cry that, " Oh for conventional springs !" Us oldie Ls400 owners with conventional springs might well have the best of all worlds ..... the diesel oil filter issues throwing up those Christmas tree lights on the dash, pretty they might be but cheap they ain't Just some thoughts Malc1

  8. Just cleaned these today as well and doing the obligatory fluid changes (oil / filter etc) Pictures are of the two sets of front slide pins (before and after a clean. I clean these every 6 months (ish) just so happens this time it has been 8 months since the last clean. No problems with the fronts - grease still quite clean although a bit dirty on one pin - all the rubber seals are fine. The bottom rear pin recesses on both sides still had grease in them but not that much to be honest so I think I caught these just in time - also the rubber recesses on the top of the caliper were a bit lacking in grease - guess they take more of a beating to the front pins. Definitely think a 6 month check on these is worth while... Before and after - pins were the same on both sides TOP BOTTOM

I have been lucky to not need to buy any slide pins - always stuck to cleaning and re-greasing every 6 months or so - I would rather spend an hour doing this than replacing the calpiers at what would cost £1k+ I very much doubt that your slide pins are worn and loose - possibly if the rubber rattle shim is missing but I cant see the pins wearing? I have even taken off the rubber shims in the past on my is200 as they had split and it didn't make any difference with them off. A wrong choice of grease would be worse as if using the wrong type then it will lead to seizure with the rubber seals also goosed. How did your mechanic come to the conclusion the pins were worn - did he take them out of the calipers to check them? You can try and get a cost of a set of these from Lexus but I think it would be cheaper buying a bar of gold ...!

  13. Just done my oil / filters and slide pins today - Everything ok. Black Friday prices on a Saturday !! £58 for the oil and filters.which cant be bad. If your oils black its saturated with dirt / contaminants etc and not working as it should - stick with the flush for the next few oil changes and you will definitely see a difference in the colour of the oil when its changed - may take a few but you will definitely see a difference. How often do you change it? I change mine every 6 months or so (8 months this time round) and with a flush every change, the oil is never black now when I change it - its dark be not black. It definitely quietens the engine down some after a change. You may find once the oil is changed that you get a rattle - I have had this on most changes and have put it down to the reservoir filling up after it has been emptied so no real issue.

  14. I could not agree more concerning the choice of tyres for noise levels. Coming from a Prius to the Lexus was a revelation noise wise. However the OEM tyres on the Prius were Bridgestone's , and changing to Hankooks reduced the noise level considerably while also improving the mpg figures in spite of the fact that I went from 195's to 205's. I now pay great attention to the tyre labels for economy, grip, and noise level. I have also learned the higher the price you pay for tyres does not always translate into a better tyre. John.

I should also point out that auto decibel database has the Lexus LS and GS as one of the top 10 quietest cars and rated higher than the 2016 Merc E and 2016 BMW 7 series I would assume other cars on the same road would make a louder noise and it's probably a combo of crap roads and relatively noisy tyres

The LS430 is also much safer with more air bags etc. When I insured my first LS430 I questioned why it was less than the 400, the reply was "because it's a safer car" I still have a soft spot for the LS400 though. Someone round the corner from me has one, a late X reg in lovely condition, an impressive looking car.

  17. Update I have not yet written to Lexus but tried phoning the warranty company. (I prefer email to phone as I my deafness makes the phone difficult. However they don't respond to emails.) After some discussion with the man who wrote the letter I quoted here on November 2nd. I was transferred to "claims" for more discussion. The outcome of this discussion was that I will be taking the car to Swindon Lexus on December 7th. for the claims assessor to assess. He/she will then write a report and I will be informed in a couple of days or so. Of course this is 3 months on from the service at which the problems were noted but I assume that once dead, dampers stay dead. I would like to take with me the details of the two LOC posted who said they had dampers replaced under warranty. I will try and email them off list. John

I agree with phil - the LS430 is a nice place to be in and for me especially during the last 3 weeks since i have ditched the Dunlops and had the Avons fitted - the car is even quiter and smoother. The air suspension risk is there but I am not really worried nor do i think of going back to the 400 becuase of this. The LS430 is a big step forward - with the keyless entry, soft close doors (I close mine this way all the time), reverse camera and allround modern interior. For me to be 100% happy with a car I like to have alot of repect for it - I have alot of respect for the 430 - sadly i do not feel same in any other car (probably never will) - even when driving a very modern bmw 5 series with a 25k price tag - just not the same!

  19. Air suspension on Lexus cars is nothing new, the import model I had was on air and a 1994 model. According to the service records during it's lifetime it had the 2 rear struts replaced with new OEM replacements but not at the same time. All the height sensors and pump were original and the suspension worked fine Other manufacturers had hydraulic systems like Citroen and even BL had the likes of Hydrogas. Given the above my thoughts turn to build quality of the parts fitted to newer models, if an air suspension components can last 22 years why do we now have problems with them failing in half this time or less in some cases. Another consideration is the present state of the roads... potholes will break conventional springs so it must be assumed that air suspension units are also subjected to the same abuse possibly resulting in premature failure. As for the foray into diesel engines I believe this was purely a commercial attempt by Lexus to meet the market demands at the time when diesel was made out to be the future of combustion engines.

  25. Had exactly the same problem some weeks back on my 2005, LS430 on 80,000 miles. Fortunately, I had a code reader and was able to diagnose the problem immediately. Heater element gone on Bank 1, Sensor 1. Bought a Denso replacement lambda sensor for about £65 on ebay, and my local garage charged £30 to fit it. Problem solved and no warning lights. Good code readers are available online and not too expensive. As you mention, the socket is down under the dash on the left hand side, but you have to scrabble about finding it. Never ignore warning lights, they will not go away unless action is taken. Good luck for the future.

Hi Guys, Unless you're talking about the RR-Racing performance intake, there isn't much in it with things like Joe Z, HPS, RR-Racing, Takeda etc. As it stands, the stock airbox with an updated panel filter (take your pick, there's plenty!) and an improved intake pipe is the best option(unless you have headers and the tune, in which case it's the performance intake with larger MAF from RR-Racing). I prefer my titanium intake elbow from RR-Racing because the intake breather pipes are removed, and instead go through a small K&N filter. The AOS I have fitted proves there is a tendency to get oil in your intake/engine with the stock setup. Whilst it's not a huge deal, I'd prefer not to have it there, so these two mods are doing wonders. Cheers. Pete

  30. Doesn't work like that. You're assuming the battery is always completely charged and the car starts off in EV. In reality, the engine will turn on regardless of battery charge if the engine is cold, which it probably would be.

  31. Thats the 3rd Gen RX Steve! I believe the OP has just bought himself a shiny 4th Gen with all the toys! Anyways - when the panoramic view monitor turns on next time you are traveling below 6mph, check on the bottom left side and click the AUTO button. This will stop it coming on under 6mph. Same applies to all other cameras.   32. I am in this very process right now so should give you an idea. None of the below really needs doing as by most standards the ISF is a superb example as she stands but I cant resist...As mileage is decreasing and the 4x4 is getting more use I'm going to take her off the road for a few weeks for a freshen up. I already have it quoted up: Front bumper, both front wings, bonnet, full length side skirts inc. back bumper, rear boot lid, stone chips to door shut on drivers side, all four wheels, brake calipers done in LFA Blue and fitment of my carbon boot spoiler. So pretty much full paint with exception of doors, roof and rear quarters, bare in mind this is no mere waft in or paint over, its a full dress back, primer, paint and clear coat. Just under £2800. Its not cheap but thats what it takes. Its the labour time for proper dress back that does it. A quick flat, build up with primer and then spray it in would be much cheaper. Not saying either is the right or wrong way, both perfectly viable options and look the same in the end. I am I have to say a little excited about it all...

  33. thanks a lot roheel, i can see why now it's sewell, i had swell from the first post, lol, i have sent them an e mail, about the shipping, it came out at $84 from shppoing cart? in the meantime i have found 1E3 touch up on our good old e bay, even genuine toyota touch up's with free postage, my lexus dealer refused to send my recent touch up in the post, this meant a 75 mile total journey for me to pick it up, around 5 gallons in a is-f in fun mode lol.
