  1. I did what you are planning to do, buying trade and taking out a warranty and Lexus service scheme. I've had to use the warranty as the aircon system stopped working and it took Lexus a full day of stripping it to find out it was down to corroded connections. This would have been a pretty penny if I had to pay for it. Whatever you do get the warranty. If I was buying again though I would buy directly from a Lexus dealership. Its so much less hassle as you'll get a years warranty anyway and the sort the car out properly before sale. Maybe something like this? http://usedcars.lexus.co.uk/used-GS/GS-450h/3.5/Stoke-on-Trent/1833775-606136054-1607044.aspx?srcmdc=se_na_re_

  2. Could it be a key recognition issue? The fact the seat and wheel adjustment doesn't happen automatically? Perhaps new key fob battery needed?

  3. Ive owned my 07 IS250 for about 4 months. After owning an 02 IS200 for just over 4 years. After a bit of googling and searching on here to try to get the traction control off properly using the pedal dance and other methods I gave up because nothing seemed to work. But last night I managed to figure it out. With one foot on the brake pedal hold down the traction button and at the same time toggle the switch to the right of it between snow and pwr a few times and it will disable the traction control and stability control systems until the ignition is cycled or the traction button is pressed again. Hope this helps. Be carfull with the traction control off, I was surprised how easy it was to light the tyres up with minimal effort. 😶

  4. This is my original post Roger. I made a point yesterday of dropping in on this chap yesterday afternoon to see what he has to offer given that he is midway between Lexus Chester and Lexus Liverpool. Glyn Jones is his name and he operates from an individual garage behind the big car sales shrowroom (Wright/Heathland) on the Chester Road in Heswall. He tells me that he is an ex Lexus man and runs a Toyota Hilux and services all makes of vehicles. He had a BMW being serviced on his ramp at the time of my visit and he has been in business for about 8 years if my old memory serves me correctly. I was particularly interested in having him quote for a hard wire installation of a dash camera in my GS Hybrid and for the provision of 4 All Season tyres so that I could compare with the quotes provided to me by one of the Official Lexus Dealers locally. The hard wire installation quote was one third of the Lexus price and he can do it next week. I am still waiting to hear from Lexus re the tyres. They promised to contact me but have failed to do so.(not the first time they have failed to phone back and very disappointing given Lexus` highly publicised customer ratings).Mercedes not phoning back is a given ,but Lexus not phoning back suggests that Standards of Performance need reviewing ! Glyn phoned me back that afternoon re the tyres! I am not associated in any way with this Indie, but thought it might be helpful for members (IN THE LOCAL AREA) to be aware that there is an Indie who might be able to help them ( at a competitive rate) with tasks needing to be undertaken on their vehicles which are no longer under Official Lexus Warranty. His contact details are; Glyn Jones Unit4 Leighton Estates Chester Road, Heswall CH60 3RZ TEL;0151 342 9944 or 07545846762. Ceramicolive likes this Quote Edit Regards John

  7. Bearing in mind that not everyone wants to pay 700 euro for the genuine TRD spoiler and copies sold only in the USA and in Taiwan ( have to wait for 3-4 weeks this delivery ), I decided to do a replica.

  8. In the warmer months I can start mine and stick it straight into EV mode before the petrol motor kicks in then sneak out the cul-de-sac. Not always, sometimes the battery mustn't have enough charge as it says EV mode not available but most times. In these winter months however that is less frequent and it usually wants to run the petrol motor as soon as I start moving, in order to get heat going, demisting etc. Next time you come back home in the car and it has at least half charge turn it off an give it a few minutes then start it up with the climate control off and see if it will run in EV mode then. It probably will but if it never goes into EV then it could have a fault - although that should trigger a warning.

  10. ............ beautiful looking beast I agree BUT who on earth would be able to afford one after a few years with all that gizmo etc stuff to repair ....... they all have built in obsolesence I guess and the longevity must surely be very limited by 2nd and 3rd / 4th owners never being able to afford the repairs etc. ... and the values just simply collapse much like the Ls600 ....... what price a Bentley ... drop @£200k in 5 years ! Nice to see and drive I'm sure but only a very rich man's toy methinks Malc

  11. I had a tiny creak around that area after fixing the multi fuction display unit, - I just gave it a bit of a push... - it was intermittent.. and the creak just disappeared on it's own in a short time. My biggest noise now is my keys rattling against each other. Such hardship.

  12. 100k was standard warranty for is220d engine only. That was extend due to awful lot of head gasket issues.

  13. I checked the servicing costs for our newer hybrid with our local Indy, and tbh, it was only fractionally cheaper than Lexus for the minor and about £50 cheaper for the major. Front brake pads were £30 cheaper (incl vat) fitted from the Indy as was a battery change (£80 cheaper!). There may be other savings. On the flip side, Lexus customer care has been exemplary, at least with our local one in Cheltenham, who include a courtesy car to use when ours is in for service plus have always valeted our car inside and out as part of the service. Add to the general servicing the £56 annual hybrid check and this also offers a full 12 month warranty on the entire hybrid system, extendable by 12 months with every healthcheck taken each year. That has to be worth it for a vehicle over 5 years old just for peace of mind I'd have thought.

  14. I have to agree with the OP. I would expect that it's an absolutely fantastic car to be in, but I don't think the exterior does the car justice. Comparisons to a Hyundai or Kia say it all. I'd also suggest that it's got a touch of "Mondeo" about it also. Bit of a shame really, maybe it looks better in the flesh. I also agree that they may have tried too hard. The grill and those wheels look a little too "busy". No full length sun roof either?

  15. I found it weird to suggest that underinflating tires can give any advantage to anyone. I often find Honest John advice correct, but suggesting to run 30PSI without even considering manufacturer recommended pressure or sizes is plainly dumb. Maybe OP can provide link, where HJ suggest that (I am just wondering what is background for such claim). I treat recommended pressure as indicative - something which is going to be correct for 90% of use cases and you should stick with them if you are running stock tire sizes. Based on load it can be adjusted, but more often than not pressure needs to be increased and not decreased e.g. I run slightly higher pressure on IS250 R17, because over the years I have noticed that tires tends to wear outside under Lexus recommended pressure indicating that it is too low, but even then I run like 38 instead of 36, not 30 instead of 38.

  16. Took the car to a local garage this morning and they welded both flanges no problem and also re-attached rear heat shields that were coming loose. Total price £40!! So both Powerflow agents I went to told me the flanges could not be welded and would have been happy to charge me £395-con artists. I will never go to a Powerflow agent again.

  17. It definitely has presence, but to my taste looks as if the designer was trying much too hard. Interesting that someone mentioned Kia and Hyundai because I've always felt the same about their cars, almost a case of being "over designed" if that makes sense. The best looking cars, in my view, give the impression of effortless design.I still prefer the X350 xj jag to the more modern design, although it is growing on me, I prefer the Mk 2 Jag to the E type, as it's better proportioned. If I could afford one I would buy a Lancia Aurelia B20, which are simply beautiful pieces of automotive art. These cars exude understated elegance, but perhaps my tastes are old fashioned. Judging by the value of Lancia Aurelia B20s now, I think I am not alone. I think a modern version would sell like hot cakes, especially if the urge to add the latest in technology was resisted. Some modern cars are technically brilliant but are destined, I think, for a short lifespan as second and third owners etc. are unable to afford astronomical repair costs for complex electronic systems that are destined to fail. I, for one, would sacrifice many totally unnecessary gizmos that many of us seem unable to live without, and would much prefer the money to be spent on more sound insulation, more thorough research and development into noise, vibration and harshness, ride/handling etc.

  18. Jamie, the estimate assumes that you do not have any problems and that all goes well with buying from a suitable Dealer/Trader and that Lexus will accept your purchase for the Extended Warranty Scheme. All of that may indeed happen and I hope it does go well for you. I would suggest however that you build in an appropriate cushion of contingency amounting to approx 30%, say £900 to bring your anticipated first year expenditure to £4,000.(£333 pm). This would cushion the effect of having to deal with matters such as replacing wheel bearings, changing transmission oil, replacing brake pads and possibly discs, miscellaneous bulbs and wiper rubbers. If some of these items occur (bearings, oil and discs) in the first 6 months of purchase from the Dealer/Trader,he may stand the cost. But if they occur after 6 months, then you would have to meet the cost. Whatever occurs Jamie, I think that some sort of contingency should be built into the figures. Just my view Jamie and I do hope that all goes well for you. Regards John

  19. Sadly by the time that lovely looking beast is affordable on my budget I'll be dribbling down my shirt and always sitting on my glasses (assuming I'll have the strength to stand up in the first place) I'll also be too old to get insurance!

  20. The only reason I went for the ISF was because I was so impressed with the IS250, then was one over by the prospect of the rare V8! Had spells with 's' Audi's and don't fancy going there again :-(. I like to go a little off piste with my car choice and not sure what else would give me that. Would probably stick with an IS or RX and sacrifice the performance. Little Porsche would be nice but not practical for my kid.

  21. Lexus to cheaper servicing for cars that are 5+ years old called Essential Care. The prices can be found here: https://www.lexus.co.uk/owners/servicing-and-maintenance/#ServicingYourLexus The £399 service is a bit steep, but the £199 isn't too bad. What's funny is that the dealer asks you which service you want, and seeing as the stamp is the same, you could just opt for doing the minor services and take care of the rest yourself, or just leave it.

  22. Yep that looks like the heat sensor for the battery. It can trigger a warning I believe, but don't think it would be a VSC type more likely to be a "Battery Low" warning. But these things can work in funny ways ... so maybe it could trigger a VSC. Get it back in its rightful place and see if the VSC stops. I had a innocuous wire loose on my old 220d and that caused a VSC message to be displayed. Looked like a mechanic had possibly bashed it (and partly crushed the wire) against the engine body with the spinning of a socket handle. At least that was my best guess. If you have a code each time with VSC for the DPF then that is your issue. Wynn's and I think Millers make a dpf cleaner additive....Halfords or Eurocarparts should be able to oblige.

  23. The loose wire is not the problem. It just needs putting back in its holder which is that bit of plastic sticking out from left of the battery cover, but doing that just tidies the wire - it won't have any effect on the running of the car if you just leave it where it is.

  24. I had the evergreens fitted on my previous is220d and to be honest they were dreadful in the wet. Even going slowly around roundabouts the car was twitchy and felt as though the back end would slide at any given time. My current is250 has the standard dunlop sports all round and they are much much better in the wet and I feel a lot more confident driving in this vehicle.

  25. Largely rubbish tyres IMHO. Evergreen EU72 tyres get good reviews when new, but a lot of reviewers say that they last a long time (eg one reviewer claims 75K miles for a set). That points to hard rubber - and as I've said before, hard rubber tyres get to be lethal in the wet especially when they wear down to 3mm or so. Avon ZV7 are an excellent choice - I have them all round. Doesn't stop the occasional kicking in of TC though when it's wet or icy. All the electronic gizmos in the world can't beat the laws of physics!

  26. That's some list. One might as well buy a Volkswagen! Seriously though, that is an excellent list; it's thinks like that that make this forum such a brilliant resource. Many thanks, speaking a someone possibly in the market for an IS250 next...

  27. Bringing an old post back to life I am working on using an android phone or tablet through the GS450H screen. I am going to use a ball mouse or possibly a touch pad and buttons from an old laptop to give a mouse pointer on screen. This is working on the android devices I have. This will mean the Lexus touch screen will show the mouse pointer, and the "mouse/touch pad" will be used to input instructions "post code ect" to the android devise via the touch screen mouse pointer. Voice input could also be used. For those that like Tom Tom the software is available for android phones, and tablets in Playstore for very little money, but free software is also available. I am at the moment working on the method of transferring the video from the android device to the Lexus screen, but I have a few ideas on how to accomplish this in the simplest manner. This will bring the Lexus Satnav up to date with speed camera, and speed limit warnings along with full postcode entries at far less cost than a map update without loosing in fact gaining functionality. Audio will also be implemented. When I have a viable system up and running I will post details. John.

  28. Honest john or the manufacturer that designed the car and spent ages testing it to make it safe, easy choice . How can he say 30/30 without knowing size/width/speed rating, load of tyre. Total rubbish.

  29. Ive ran one for 3yrs now. Basically so many idiots in the road its not worth moving without one. There are lots if choice from the cheap chinese rubbish to The £300 topline stuff. I run a £150 unit from halfords a nextbase one. I preffered having a shop to go back to if it needed while under warranty. Its been fine. As far as fitting. It didnt like placing next to the dab aerial as i kept losing stations. Other side of mirror is fine. I run the cable along headliner and behind a pillar and under dash to centre console. I didnt like having the flap open for the 12v supply so ordered another and plumbed it in under center console so basically hardwired. As for the memory card , to insure smooth recording make sure you match or exceed the card speed to the camera. i did once catch a lorry sideswiping a womans car and the video was used as evidence as the lorry didnt stop. the sooner cams come as standard the better imo

  30. Well, that might explain why you found the power delivery of the 220d so bad. I can't really comment on the E220, but the 320d and the Golf are cars that I would consider on the better side when it comes to engine characteristics. A friend of mine has a 118d (I have mentioned him before on here), and the power delivery of the BMW is far superior to the Lexus. Although there is still a noticeable jump in performance after 1500rpm. I too have had a few hairy moments at roundabouts if I try to use 2nd gear while the car is at very low revs. Although this is not a problem unique to the Lexus, I have found that the best solution was in the Mondeo, namely an automatic gearbox. Diesel cars, with their narrow power bands, are ideally suited to automatic gearboxes, so it still baffles me why Lexus didn't offer it. And finally, apologies to Steve for stealing your thread. It seems tricky to keep topics on track these days.

  31. As far as the egr valve is concerned even when clean and running correctly you will experience very little power until at least 1600 rpm and between 1800-2000 rpm is when she takes off. Very uncharacteristic for a diesel engine as the majority produce power much lower down in the rev range. Forget 6th gear in the uk unless you want a speeding ban as only useful at 90mph and above.

  32. This is very required option. One uses it to remove old layer from thr tyre to bring the fresh one out. :)

  33. Some times in frosty and snowy weather as I live at the bottom of a hill traction control can cause a issue getting on my drive way plus I like the smell of tyre smoke.

  34. I'm sure the IS250 was rated at 7.7s in the US so figures around that would make sense. The IS250 probably feels quicker due to the sound and gearing. The power button will be keeping the revs higher so its always in the power band. The 250 is also more responsive due to the fact it has no turbos to spool up
