  1. Well after fitting the tyres the car drove very well and we went away at the weekend and did several hundred miles and unfortunately I don't like it...!!! My old 430 was a superb car, easy and relaxing to drive, it just wafted along and if you wanted to get a hurry on it would oblige but most of the time it just settled into it's stride.... The 460 is a totally different animal, it's like driving a puppy on a lead, it just wants to go all the time, little subtlety to it, it's too keen and doesn't seem to settle, the smallest accelerator input and it want's to change down a few cogs and take off like a scalded cat.. I drove like Miss Daisy hoping the adaptations would work it out and tone it down and it did get a bit better but it is certainly not a relaxing drive. It was my good lady who mentioned after a couple of hundred miles... "You don't seem to like this car" even she noticed my frustration with it..... So, I've spent a couple of days evaluating options and although it's a great car and has all the extras I wanted I'm cutting my loses and selling it.... such a shame.... So to those who asked what it was like compared to a 430, that's my answer, I'm sure lots will love it but not me...

  3. Just posted this on the gsf rcf topic but thought some of you might like to watch it. Im sure most of you have Seen it but think its a really good review And like that he goes into a bit about the history of making it and that he thinks people will look back at the isf as the turning point for lexus and Toyota. If that's the case the isf will def be in the history books. Enjoy.

  4. It's interesting your comments on the LS460 being too eager and thus making it less relaxed. I can understand where you are coming from and this is where performance has it's place for certain models. take my GS450, it's something inbeteeen and I think it's performance adds a certain excitement to the drive. The car is fairly firm anyway and seems to lend itself to the extra eager throttle response. My RX450h on the other hand I feel is the complete opposite. It really makes me drive much more sedate and you feel cosited about. Despite being the same slightly detuned engine it feels quite lazy in comparison to the GS. if I'm honest I feel it could do with just a little more performance to make it a perfect balance, sometimes I feel the weight which indicates to me the necessity for a little more from the engine. i liken the LS in drive to the RX in that it should also be driven in a sedate manner but when needed and only when needed have the power delivery on tap. it should not be a case of the lightest touch of the pedal interfewrs with an otherwise tranquil ride. sounds like lexus are forgetting the heritage for relaxed, comfortable drive and compromising it for handling and performance BMW style rides. carl

  5. Peter I admire your honesty and hope you get a reasonable return on the project it as cleared a few myths and truths up thats for sure. I think that anyone who as experienced long term use of either the 400 or 430 tend to get converted to that ambience for life and it is a bit difficult to get over them, a bit like a trusted favourite armchair.

  6. Just wanted to share some of my experience on leaking boot gasket on LS400. I have had that problem and probably some of you had/have it as well as it is a quite common problem on them. I was considering to buy a new gasket for the boot but the price is steep. I have spent £20 for a transparent silicone(not glue one) and some silicone tubing with the external dia of 6mm. I took the gasket off the car boot. I cut small hole in the boot gasket to feed the tubing through. Tubing supports aged and squashed original gasket. The silicone went inside the the gasket. One hour job and so far no leaks. Now I can hunt for a bargain price original gasket without rush and leaking boot.

  8. @Rusty Crobar. You and this thread - it's all your fault. Just looked outside. Rain has stopped. Weather in Wales tomorrow looks good. IS-F needs a workout. I'll send you a postcard from Wales. Off I go.

  11. Hi Pete, i have been reading your updates on the LS460 avidly over the last few weeks, fascinating and impressive. I've had two Ls430's now, each for four years, and I'm keeping my current one as long as I can. I agree, the LS460 is a lovely car at many levels, and I was going to upgrade a number of times, but it just wasn't as cosseting and soulful. I prefer the LS430 so I totally agree with you. Each time I drive my LS430 I marvel at its refinement and ease of use. My friends just don't get it, only the owners here get it. I drive a Maserati Quattroporte Sport GTS too which is fabulous, but if I go on a longish journey, guess what car keys are in my hand 😀. I have connected a Vaistech which lets me play my Apple music or Spotify through the wonderful music system. It's heaven at any speed. I couldn't bear to sell my LS because if I did, every time I see one I would want it back again. I'm sure you have a difficult decision ahead of you. Nige

  12. Thanks, i did look at those and also went to see a mate who does remapping... Although it's a large part of the issue it's just the whole driving experience I'm not liking, I'm rather fussy about it, I hate driving BMW's but millions love them so it's probably me.....

  22. Good review, but I never understand why they give the f sport out to journalists. They think it's a sports car, thrash it then say its noisy, bumpy and poor mpg. Much better to give them a premier or advance to try and focus on the comfort side of things. But then I never got the point of the f sport anyway.

  23. Well this has been a rollercoaster of a thread . I know exactly what you mean about binding to a car or not. If you don't feel comfortable with it then it's difficult to get beyond that. I loved my old LS400 and love my current LS430 and do think an LS460 will be on my horizon one day, but do have a nagging doubt that I'll miss something intangible in these old boxes... Will find out in about 10 years once the current one has worn itself out .

  24. Cripes you don't hang about! A pal had one of those big yank 4x4's and the Merc engine was a peach. Hope you enjoy it.

  25. Jon, it's got power mode which just makes it hold gears and snow mode which makes it pull away in second or something... neither make much difference... Anyway I've bought the replacement, if I bought a saloon it had to be easy to get in and out of, low sill, high door opening, the only other big saloon that fits the bill is the Audi A8 but I don't like them so..... one of the other cars from the past I had fond memories off because of it's laid back chilled out approach to life was a Mk1 Jeep Grand Cherokee.. so, sorry to say I've bought a Yank Tank... and one with a dirty diesesal engine.... It was cheap and local, needed a wheel refurb and new tyres, had those diamond turned wheels and a few years have taken their toll... A quick phone call to Mr Kahn's emporium in Bradford and I got a set of take offs from a later Wrangler, brand new set of wheels with Goodyear Wrangler Tyres dated late 2016 for £250 for four... (BTW Khan has loads of wheels and tyres from all the cars he customises when new, a good source and cheap, don't know how many Lexus he does though, ring and ask for Dave) Stopped at my mates who does the remapping on the way home and he was quiet so it's been chipped to 265bhp and 600nm, it's a 3.0ltr CRD Mercedes engine, goes very well now, real lazy but pulls well... Anyway I love it, easy to get in and out and drives like a big old boat, with not a puppy in sight.... just what I was after.... Not quite the same spec as the Lexus but buttons aren't everything... I'll advertise the Lexus when the weather gets warmer and I can give it a good clean, it's bogging after a weekend away....

  27. Being lazy or just getting old? I am about to fit a cigarette type power point in the boot fed via a fuse strait from the 12 volt battery. This will be used for two or three things. (1) To plug in my electric tyre pump. (2) I have a 12 volt electric wheel wrench " much the same as the air wrenches used in garages, but runs on electric". No more wheel nuts I cannot undo. (3) in the summer I can plug in a portable 12 volt fridge to keep my beers sorry sandwiches cold. The problems with the ones in the car are they only work with the ignition, and it saves dragging possibly dirty leads across the seats. John.

  28. I just removed the carpet cover over the 12 volt battery removing two plastic fasteners one on top one on the side. Then pulled the carpet away from the corners enough to reach in to the mounting points. There is a strange shape plastic piece over the motor unit. This just pulls up off the three mounting pins. It is not obvious what this does. Reaching in, and moving your fingers over the area of the shock mount it will be obvious if there is an oil leak. There is no danger of electric shock in that area around each shock absorber mount. The correct way is to remove the centre top and back carpet first "long winded". I have not seen a guide on how to do this. Next time I take mine out i'll take some notes. There are from memory some plastic hooks on the roof part of the carpet that hold the top in place along with visible plastic fasteners on the vertical piece. This fully exposes the HV battery. John

  29. On the fronts it is a 5 minute job. The rears take some getting at removing the carpets from the corners of the boot. John
    1 point
  30. There is another place that the shock absorbers leak from that cannot normally be seen. On the fronts the cover over the mounting point under the bonnet needs to be removed "three nuts" these nuts only hold on the cover over the adjuster motor there are three more underneath these that hold the mount in place. After removing the nuts lift off the cover over the motor that adjusts the shock. Sometimes you will find this cover full of oil. It come from a faulty seal inside the rod where the adjuster shaft passes through. This oil is from inside the shock absorber so if you have oil inside the cover the shock absorber is faulty. At the rear you need to remove the carpets in the boot to gain access to the rear top mounting. If you fingers get oily touching this mounting the shock is leaking in the same manor as for the fronts, but there is no cover on the rears. This leak point does not show under the car so it is worthwhile removing the covers to check. John. John

  32. Yes it can but not to the same extent as a turbo engine, the direct injection helps and they could up the torque and improve MPG, also they smooth out the power flow, you would notice a small difference and maybe 1 or 2 mpg. If anyone decides to then make sure they are a reputable company or you could end up with a rather large paper weight... Never go back is my motto, cars or women...!!! Thanks to all of you for the comments, I know when I'm not happy with something so I'll cut my losses now....

  36. That's awful Dan! I have a golden rule with our RX after our previous GS suffered a similar fate in a supermarket car park....don't park in them! We use a small runabout for supermarket runs and it cost probably less than the annual cost of dent and scratch repairs over 3 years to have a small cheap runabout you don't mind getting banged up. Some users of supermarkets are just ignorant, dishonest, incompetent drivers who couldn't give a damn about anyone else's vehicles. I've lost count of the number of times I've sat in the car waiting for my wife and had someone open a door onto my car, or watched others banging shopping trolleys off someone else's car..never their own mind you! I would not contact insurance companies for such damage after speaking with Lexus Insurance. Their underwriters WILL penalise you where or NOT it is your fault if any claim is made on your own insurance, protected no claims or not. If you had 10 years no claims, the maximum carried for insurance is 5 years. If you have unprotected No Claims and make a claim, you automatically lose two years No Claims and your renewal not only rises about 15% for making the claim but rises more as you lose a few years NC too. Protected NC only means that you retain 5 years bonus BUT your insurance will still rise by around 15% for making a claim and it will remain on your record. Unfortunately, these days with so many numpties and uninsured drivers on the roads and car parks, you either avoid the places and find somewhere safer to park (and walk) or use cameras to record numberplates of cars which have damaged your vehicle and then drive off. Hand that to the police and if on a public road they have no choice but to follow up as that is leaving the scene of an accident, injury or not, which is an offence unless insurance details are exchanged. The only fly in the ointment is that a car park isn't strictly speaking a public road, it is a private car park, but details of the registration can still be given to insurers whose database will flag up the responsible owner, if insured, and you can then pursue them for a claim.

  37. I bought my LS 430 from somebody who had owned it for 7 years who then bought an LS460. This had be owned by a well known company and had been chauffeur driven, with 100,000 miles on the clock. He bought through a dealer with a new mot. He immediately had it re mot'd to find extensive front suspension wear, all put right by the dealer at a cost of £7k. He also said to me that he would buy back my LS 430 anytime I wanted to sell . I am in contact with him and he echoed your sentiments, but he is not having mine back , as I prepare for a long Spanish trip later this spring. I do think that the 460 is a fine car , but not suitable for everybody. Thank you for keeping us all so entertained and wish you well in your search for whatever , Roger

  38. Hi Pete If you are not happy about it then nothing can change that - We have a 25k BMW in the family with every extra but I dont like it - I prefer my LS. And going by the time you posted on here you were loosing sleep over it lol!! so it can only be a good decision. Atleast you can say been there, done it and got the T shirt . . . . . . and my favourite mdel is . . . . . . . . . . ..

  39. If it drives and feels as good as it looks in the piccys and everything works ok then i would buy it ! Cambelt change next due at 210k miles or 2025. This car should last you many years ..... and probably relatively trouble free and carefree and brilliantly comfortable motoring. Be hard to find another like this methinks Malc

  45. Im unsure about what a dash cam would achieve in situations like these. The footage is next to useless. Hand it to the police and they'll stick their hands up and won't do anything. Instead, I guess its a good tool for getting some subscribers and views on Youtube. Seems to be a recurring theme of car owners with dash cams to comment/use vulgar language towards other people's driving and upload it onto the internet.
