  1. A short story......some on here will have heard some of it....if so I apologise. I joined this site back in 2005 I think it was....I had just bought a 120.000 mile LS400 Mk3. I did another 84.000 miles of the BEST motoring in my 35 years of driving.....That Car was simply Amazing.... I did all my own maintainance on that car and it was a pleasure to work on too.....so well put together....that it also comes apart beautifully too. Anyway....I was a bit worried that it really needed a full Respray as it was getting some rust around the arches and windscreen....though long and hard about the cost.... and made the decision to buy a nearly new LS460....and I gave my friend the 400 as he needed a car at the time. I tried so very hard for approx 18 months to Love that 460....and I have said on here before as to how disappointed I was with it....I was just not enjoying it at all. So I went and traded it for a 1 year old Touareg V8 Diesel...... the VW was a nightmare.....great to drive but at the dealers over and over with problems....mostly electrical causing Limp Mode..... So sold that ....as I just could not trust it to get me anywhere....I was using my wife's MX5 to make sure I got to appointments...even the RAC men were getting sick of it. Well....here I am where I started....with lots of lessons learned... and thousands poorer to learn those lessons....looking again for the Best Car in the World. I have been a Fool...and when I find a good one....I will keep it for as long as I can keep it running....and if it needs a 5 grand paint job...it will get it ....Believe Me !.

  2. I bought a GS450h in a private sale recently, just less than 10 years old. I bought the warranty over the phone, they didn't ask to inspect it although I did book a service at the same time, I am currently having some work done under warranty which was picked up during the service. By the way, I believe the car you are looking at would fall into the essential servicing schedule for cars over 5 years old, fairly reasonable on price, £225 for a minor service and £425 for a major one. I would recommend having a drive of a 450h in addition to the 250 F you are looking at.....

  3. As the new owner of a RX400 literally the only thing that I did not like about the car with the ageing headunit/infotainment system, particularly missing the bluetooth streaming and DAB radio I had in my previous car. A few searches online lead me to the Grom Vline (http://gromaudio.co.uk/products/vl1-infotainment-upgrade/lexus-toyota-2006-2009-grom-vline-infotainment-system-upgrade-video-interface.html) by coincidence I seem to have been looking just at the point this launched, so think I may be one of the first to install this in a UK car. Therefore I thought a few people may be interested in some thoughts: What is it? Essentially it's an upgrade to the infotainment system that adds a full Android system all controllable through your touchscreen, without any visible alterations. It comes with some custom apps but you can also add anything from the Play Store (Google Maps, Spotify, YouTube etc) and also has CarPlay build in if you have an iPhone. Installation Much like other bluetooth units that are out there for the RX the vline imitates an external CD changer to play through the headunit. Therefore other than the moment when you realise you have a gaping hole in the center console of a car you've only owned for a week... it's all pretty straight forward. Installation is all plug and play, 1 connection to your head unit, 1 connection to the screen. I followed this YouTube video to get the headunit out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zEf91Z0RuCA Then there are just 2 more bolts for the screen which were very obvious once you had removed the head unit, then it unclips and slides out in the same way. It was then just a case of plugging everything together using the 2 supplied harnesses. As you can see from the video everything is also clipped in as well as bolted, so I'd have is make sure to get some cheap trim tools (mine were 1.99 from ebay) as they make life easier. The only other tool you need is a 10mm socket. The Good Bits Once up and running I was genuinely blown away by how impressive it is, when you start up Spotify or Google Maps it puts most brand new cars to shame. It's all very intuitive, particularly if you have used Android in the past. The vline is accessed by pressing the DISC button twice. You don't lose your existing DVD changer in the dash, it just appears as an additional CD changer after this. You can easily customise your homescreen with any app you download. I currently have Google Maps, Spotify, Bluetooth Streaming, PocketCast (podcasts) and TuneIn Radio (dab/internet radio stations) which pretty much covers me for anything audio related I ever listen to. With regard to the apps themselves these are the full android versions of the apps, so essentially anything you can do on your phone, you can do here. If you have an iPhone it can also run CarPlay, which seems even better as it's designed for in car use (big buttons/simplified menus etc). However I'm an Android user, so beyond a quick 2 min test using someone else's phone I haven't tried with the vline extensively. The Not So Good - It's £430. For me it's worth it, but I can imagine others will think it's overly expensive. - It is still buggy at times. I ran into some issues after I first installed where it would not boot up properly the first time I started the car. Turning the ignition on and off would sort the problem each time, but it was very frustrating. There was an update to the system on the 23rd of December which seems to have solved this issue and beyond that I've had absolutely no issues with it once up and running. However I know others on Club Lexus forum have had issues. For what it's worth Grom support do seem very good if you have to deal with them. - In order to use any of the apps I'm runnig you need an internet connection therefore you will need to use the wireless hotspot functionality in your phone to run it. - It only runs CarPlay over a lightening/USB cable, where as I think some headunits can now do this over Bluetooth. - Android Auto is still not available yet, I believe this was tested in beta but when I spoke to Grom support they had no date for this going live. Overall Despite some bugs and the cost, as a tech and music enthusiast I think it is a great system and Grom seem committed to regular updates so I think it will continue to progress. I've attached some quick pictures, but if anyone is interested in any more specifics just fire away! There is a huge thread on the vline ClubLexus forum in the US so would be good to start something similar for us in the UK here.

  5. Get a Mini VCI with Techstream. This will give you the fault code while the problem exists, and at circa £20 will be much cheaper than a trip to the dealer. John.

  6. Chanced it and it was the 48410 which is the right one for my car. Straightforward job.

  7. Screen arrived from Lithuania this week, swapped out as per a YouTube video in about 20 minutes. Easy job apart from losing the two upper bolts from the head unit. Look for them another day! Works spot on, it's from a 2008 model. Only thing is that the reverse guides don't move when I turn the wheel, will look at that later too. Next job will be to buy a new digitiser for the old unit and have a go at fitting it.

  8. When you say wet weather, does that mean simulating wet weather with a hose pipe would make it appear, or is it the spray off the roads under the car causing the problem to show up? Sent from my iPhone using Lexus OC

  9. I think the facelift LS430s are following a similar trend to the Mark 4 - Low mileage good examples are coming up for sale less often and when they do dealers can command a premium which is the case here - I agree with phil - the original asking price £6950 was about right. On the flip side a Mark 4 on AT is asking for £5900 reduced from £6500!

  10. I really think that up to 2K should be taken off that price, or maybe even a bit more. I think it's priced high due to the mileage, but it's not that important on these cars, good service history is more so.

  11. Well tomorrow I will be parting with my beloved 12 year old IS220d SE, I've owned this car from new and can honestly say that it has been trouble free motoring. With only 85k on the clock Lexus only offered me £2k on a trade in. Will be picking up my new RX450h F-Sport on Saturday, can't wait 😀

  12. DanD above is correct. There is no need to apply any stickers or alter the beam pattern because the beams are flat and there is a thread somewhere on the forum that contains the contents of a letter from Lexus confirming that. However, that was in the context of an English tourist only travelling abroad for a short period of time. Because you wished to export your car permanently then you would have to abide by Spanish traffic law and pass a Spanish MOT, which UK headlamps would fail. EDIT: Found it, Post No. 3 in this topic (and, in fact, post No. 15 shows an actual letter from Lexus):

  13. Hold on a minute!... I was always told that, when driving a Lexus on the continent, you do not need to apply any stickers (even though they are available) on the basis that all recent models have a "flat" beam, as opposed to one that kicks up on the passenger side. This certainly is the case for the RX300/350/400h/450h and IS an GS models. Therefore, on the premise that you do not need to apply stickers when travelling on holiday, why would you need to change the headlamps at all? To my knowledge, the way the lights are setup on the CT is no different to that on other Lexus models. Is it?

  14. I bought my fluid and filter from America when I previously had an LS400 Amazingly with shipping and import charges it was cheaper than buying in this country. Go figure about rip off Britain! I have a filter kit for a MK4 for sale at mates rates if anyone needs it

  15. To qualify for the warranty the car needs to be under 10 years old and must not have covered more than 140,000 miles. So, subject to a free visual safety check at the dealers, the car you are looking at can have the warranty. I highly recommend it too as mine has been excellent.

  16. Were you looking on the Autotrader phone app? My friend said a similar thing but it is a mistake as there is no 4 wheel drive IS300h in the UK. Also, I wouldn't class the IS as a smaller version of the GS. Personally I feel the GS is a step up in terms of quality and refinement over the IS. The interior of the GS especially feels like a much nicer place to be. If you are worried about running costs, then @ds001 makes a good suggestion regarding the warranty. Other than that, just drive it and enjoy the comfort and exclusivity

  20. Wow that's disappointing!! Have had discs from them before and they have always been fine. Let's hope it's just a one off and a replacement set are to the expected standard.

  21. Morning Chaps, So I'm guessing no more than £20 for UK P&P? If it was, won't be much more surely?! Payment is the trickier part. Obviously I'm not looking to eat any costs on these, so getting the ROE locked in is quite important. I'd need to get everyone's money banked and have Simon take the card payment all on the same day.... Can't see why that would be a major problem, but it's the only hurdle with the pound being so rubbish lately! I'm heading out again tomorrow morning to San Diego, but can't get them organised that short notice. Shouldn't be that long before I head out again, although suggest we order beforehand, and I'll collect them from one of my buddies houses.... just easier than hoping they arrive before I head home. Anyway, let me know guys and we'll set this up. Cheers. Pete

  24. Same as that IS220D SE...11 years trouble free...242,000 klms. (circa 151,000 miles) Can't afford to hang on any longer for really expense parts to need replacement...eg...exhaust. the part being worth more than the car. Best car I've had inc E Class Mercs. Waiting for BMW X3 2018 model due in 2 months to the market. Never had 4x4 never had BMW...I'm retired so it's a bucket list thing. Only one complaint on Lexus IS220D too small in the back seats. Didn't affect us though as hardly ever used. RX450h...very expensive here in Ireland but a wonderful vehicle no doubt ...best of luck with it!

  25. UPDATE: had my airbag recall done today at Lexus Woodford and it was a full days job. Looks like they have taken the whole dash and replaced the clips as I have NO more cracking noise. I had foam pads stuffed between the windscreen and dash and they were not there. I am over the moon as the car is super silent and dash is very tight with no movement. Driven over rough roads and smooth roads and no cracking noise. Yey!!

  27. I've not got an RX400h but I'm assuming that the touch display is the same as in my RX300, ie, it shows navigation, it controls heating and ventilation, it does the Bluetooth phone stuff, onboard computer and a host of other things. If so, now that you've lost your original screen, how does the Grom unit interface with all that? I was looking at this video for ideas when money allows

  30. Hope you didn't pay for that. I believe they sell it for £300 and it costs £25 in the trade Doesn't work and good luck on the guarantee! Watch how many excuses they make when you say it doesn't work "Sorry sir, you weren't washing the car with the dedicated £50 a bottle, galactic space foam gold lined super shampoo" "Oh and you can't visit a hand car wash" "Or even a automatic car wash" "Actually, you shouldn't be washing your car once its been applied" "You took it off by looking at it" "You shouldn't have parked your car under a tree" "You shouldn't park your car outside" "In fact, you should always keep your car covered with our £500 GardX Bomb Protection car cover with its PTFE, non stick coating and premium materials blended from Sumatran Striped Rabbit fur, Lion's mane and Kevlar" "The fact of the matter is sir, that GardX is designed to protect your car when stationary, hence, should not be driven after application - it's the main thing our suppliers forget to tell you - we're extremely sorry for the inconvenience. However, we will make things right and as a goodwill gesture, give you the royal middle finger"

  31. Just enjoy the car, drive it, clean it and in a year or so get it detailed and start again. There are far too many uncontrollables that will cause deterioration of the paint finish to get too hung up about it.
