  1. Picked up my new NX Luxury in Mesa Red from Lexus Swindon this afternoon. No doubt it will take me a while to get to grips with the new navigation system and the touchpad, but so far it all seems very nice 😀 I must also thank Rob, James and all at Lexus Swindon who have been great to deal with - not to mention incredibly patient - throughout my trials with the previous NX Sport. Lexus UK also deserve thanks. The promise of this level of customer service is one reason why I chose a Lexus in the first place, and it's nice to see it is real even though I wish I'd never had to find out! I'm off to play with my new toy...🙂

  2. The Camry over there has that 350 engine too. They get all the good stuff in the states including the gs300 and gs350. At least we’re getting the Camry. I’m far keener than that as an idea than an ES and it comes down to money. A prestigious car (which a Lexus IS and a Toyota isn’t) shouldn’t have a transverse mounted engine. It just doesn’t sit right with me. I don’t mind having a car with a transverse engine as such but I’m not paying posh car make money for one. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  6. Well I've now had my 2015 RX450h Advance for a week and around 500 miles. How does it compare to the 2015 GS300h Luxury I traded in? Firstly Negatives; 1. Auto locking function is not available. 2. ML DAB radio is nowhere near as sophisticated and doesn't show details of track being played. Difficult to tune in, Media files awkward to find and no album covers displayed. 4. Auto wiper function not as easy to engage. 5. No blindspot indicator or rear cross radar. 6. Only one USB port in centre console. 7. Rear camera slower to come on when reverse gear engaged 8. No EV light when car running electric unless EV mode used. 9. EV mode very difficult to sustain compared to GS Neutral: No paddleshift on steering wheel. Main beam headlamps when flashed are not Xenon Positives; 1. Sat nav seems easier to program 2. conventional bulbs in interior lights ( GS always seemed gloomy with led's). 3. Creamy responsive V6 4. Excellent LED headlamps 5. Quiet luxurious cosseting ride. 6. Gorgeous deep soft cream leather seats. 7. Reclining rear seats 7. The way things like the coat hooks and grab handles are so beautifully damped. 8. Excellent bluetooth telephone connectivity. 9. TPMS system indicates actual individual tyre pressures 10. The indicator stalk is positive and not the annoying electronic sort. 11. The cruise control regulates the vehicle speed when going downhill The big plus is that my wife thinks this is the best car I have owned since an Alfa Romeo Mito in 2013. Cars since have been 2013 Mini Clubman with John Cooper Works bodykit, Mini Cooper diesel (2014) 2013 Mercedes 220 Amg Sport, "2012 Mercedes E250 diesel AMG Cabriolet, 2014 Lexus IS300h F Sport ( Ex Sir Geoff Hurst), 2015 Lexus GS300h Luxury ML. At the moment definately 'Living the dream'

  7. Morning All, Guessing some may already be aware of the big tuning/Time Attack round this coming Sunday at Brands Hatch? Just thought I’d mention it in case anyone is planning to attend? I’ll be showing my car in the Kleers show ‘n’ shine competition again this year (won best of show in 2016, which was before the supercharger kit and a few other bits and bobs!), so if you do attend, please feel free to pop along and say hello. 👍 It’s normally a good turnout with plenty to see and do including a few trade stands, food stands, racing etc. I’ll be arriving nice and early to get mine all finished up (around 8am or so), so hopefully see some people there throughout the day. Cheers all. Pete 😎

  14. As I said - it just makes so much more sense for everyone - Toyota, the buyers.. etc. it is better car with more equipment, hybrid as well and cheaper like for like. It makes sense in competitive environment as well e.g. Avensis was kind of lagging behind Ford Mondeo as realistically current Mondeo is actually rebadged Fusion, which like Camry was mid size car rather then entry/compact. Simply they now going to have more competitive product. Same cannot be said about ES.

  15. I think the engine stays on at high speed (motorway) because if you needed to accelerate, the car is ready to go. Electric motor and battery may be overly strained at such speeds. If you were full bars, going down hill and were travelling at less than 45 mph or so, I think the engine would happily stay switched off. This is my experience any how. These hybrid systems are so carefully engineered and thought through, that no stone has been left unturned. Everything is intentional from my experience thus far.

  16. I like the Camry-it looks nice inside and out and I’d be keen to save money over an ES. I’d sooner have an IS for rear drive but if faced with two essentially identical transverse mounted hybrids I’d take the Camry and put the money aside for better use. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  17. @Rayaans Did the van hit another car as well as yours? - the damage to the van seems to be much higher that you would expect it to be given the damage to your IS.

  18. I got roped into using Admiral's multicar policy, which seemed a good idea at the time. However, when it came to renewal time, they were far, far more expensive than the competition, and also a lot more expensive than if I were a new customer. I called them and straight away the quote dropped by £250, but they were still more expensive thant others. I eventually went back to LV (multi car also), with whom I was insured previously for some years. I always found them very good to deal with and very customer focused. When I called Admiral a second time to confirm that I was not renewing with them, the guy was very pushy - to the point of being rude - and explained that the Admiral person I had spoken with previously did not know what he was talking about, and that he could get me at least another £200 off! My response was that if they could save me £250 + £200 after two phone calls, why did they not offer a cheaper premium in the first place. I am now with LV. Incidentally, I add my son to my non-Lexus car insurance whenever he is back from uni for the holidays. Admiral charged me £50 per week for the privilege, whereas LV charged me £10 per week two years ago, and have charged be £98 to add him for the next 10 months (admittedly he is now 1 year older at 22).

  19. This might be a savvy buy [emoji4] - certainly compared to an ES. It seems two very different cars get axed - the GS and avensis and two very similar cars are sold at different price points. If I had an Avensis I’d be ecstatic about this. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  20. Yes - IS 200t was only in Sport, F Sport and Premier so all on 18" rims in that case I assume - although out of curiosity I looked in my owners manual and the 18" rims (225 front and 245 rear) are also specified as 36psi both front and rear too... According to everything I have read/found the IS 300h has a 50/50 weight distribution. The IS 250 (Mk III) was 54/46 when launched but I guess the extra battery weight on the 300h brought it back to 50/50 !

  23. Didnt say it could.. Quality of plastics isnt the only - or main- thing I look for in a car. The key phrase was "found a replacement I'm really pleased with". In response to the other poster who didnt want to leave lexus but found a Volvo that for him blew away an NX. in terms of quality - material, then no its not on the same level in some areas. Build and reliabilty - time will tell but probably not. But then again my GS isnt on the same level as the Mazda for economy, space, practicality, handling or kit. 20 seconds is hardly a thorough appraisal though is it?

  24. Yes indeed... it would not smear over everything with "rust-like colour" and it could actually be cleaned relatively easy, it turns transparent as well.

  25. IS 300h on 17" rims is same tyre pressure front and rear when normally laden at normal speeds (36psi) - always stuck to this and just replaced my rear tyres which had worn down to the tread wear indicators nice and evenly across the whole width of the tread. In the past my rwd cars did need slightly higher pressure in the rears and had a tendency to wear the inner edges more than the rest of tread so pleased to see the IS maxed the tyre life with nice even wear.

  26. Really? Mazda can be compared to Lexus? No offence James (honestly), I always liked Mazda6, the design of it and I have heard it is a good car to drive and I always liked one, even thought I will be considering one when the time comes to change my car (BMW). When I test drove a GS, the same garage had a 2016 Mazda 6, 2.2td with Auto gearbox, beautiful car and everything to my taste, colour, wheels, interior colour, but, when I sat in it after the Lexus (even after BMW) I could not find a single bit of interior that matches Lexus or BMW for quality, it is well screwed together but cheap to touch imo, I sat in the car for 20 seconds and got out disappointed and just admired the car from outside. :)

  27. ... yes but that makes total sense. They replace smaller (or say less premium) FWD car with bigger FWD car + hybrid upgrade and sells it cheaper then before. If I would be Avensis owner now looking to buy another Avensis I would be very happy about it. As well it makes sense for Toyota itself - Camry is probably one of the best selling cars of all time (maybe just after Corolla, Golf and Beatle), it is strong on hybrid sales as well. Avensis was critically acclaimed car, but hardly ever massive sales success or market leader, it is mostly European model as well which had no hybrid version. So options they had were to develop brand new platform for Avensis hybrid from scratch or simply replace it by existing model, which is already hybrid is better value for money and actually cheaper to manufacture due to the economies of scale. I do agree that this is related in the way Toyota/Lexus trying to optimise their line-up and employ lean manufacturing where possible to increase profitability. Bet whereas Avensis replacement by Camry makes total sense for everyone, replacement of GS with ES is very disappointing.

  28. Beware! I was also inspired to do mine, but it didn't go very well. Although the bolts appear to be easily accessible, and I did soak them in penetrating oil, they were still stuck fast. All i succeeded in doing was shearing one bolt right off. The others appeared to be going the same way, so i gave up. The trouble with sheared bolts is that the nuts are welded to the bracket, so it's not a simple job to just put on another nut and bolt. The bolt I sheared was the bottom bolt on the RHS, and there was just enough room to get a drill in the right position to drill out the old bolt. I will now ask my mechanic to do this job, because with the benefit of garage tools and facilities, the job will be accomplished much more easily.

  30. Rayaans you have the legal right to choose your own repairer. See https://www.motorclaimguru.co.uk/your-rights-as-a-consumer.html for details. You can also look at the VBRA website or go to any VBRA registered repairer and they will be happy to advise. See also https://www.nonfaultcaraccidents.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/know_your_rights.pdf isn't Google wonderful. It's a few years since I've used one but in the past if I haven't liked the insurer's approved repairer I've chosen my own VBRA approved repairer. Incidentally Lexus Nottingham have a shared (with Toyota and Jaguar) bodyshop on site so if distance isn't an issue (Nottingham to Leeds is about 90 minutes) that's an option. When you renew get a quote from NFU Mutual; they come top of the Which ratings and are a pleasure to deal with. They also give discounts to loyal customers; now that's different!

  32. Interesting @dutchie01how opinions can differ. Before I bought my first NX last year, I looked at the Volvo XC60. Having had Hondas for years I was genuinely shocked by the quality - inconsistent paintwork, poor finishing especially under the bonnet, and some of the panel gaps in the interior were shocking. The test drive revealed rattles on a car only a few hundred miles old. I can understand that some of the tech in Volvo /BMW etc is ahead of the Japanese brands, but that doesn't bother me. I just want something simple that works. What I couldn't live with is perceived poor quality. That's why I ended up with a Lexus, and in my opinion it is light years ahead on that score. Hopefully you'll enjoy your new XC40 - it wasn't released when I looked, so it may be a big leap forward for Volvo. A colleague ended up giving his new S90 back to the lease company after it left him stranded for the third time in so many months (electrical issues). Mind you, that particular individual has gone and got a Peugeot SUV hybrid instead...😂

  33. It did make an amazing noise & you could easily hear it from the Lexus hospitality balcony👍🏻 While I was looking at the car in the F1 paddock I noticed the mechanics were wearing a really smart F sport navy polo shirt with stitched logos etc so I asked if they were available to buy. The German mechanic then introduced me to the Swis lady owner who found me one - result👍🏻

  34. I'm very happy with it, I got the Mark Levinson system and although the BT audio streaming isn't in place, I've identified a product which can add that functionality while keeping the stock appearance of the system IF I decide I need it. I wasn't expecting the CD changer built into the unit which can also hold CD MP3 files.. that's a fair amount of music so that might satisfy me, time will tell. Got the motor for a very fair price, the owner already had his company car on the driveway along with his wife's motor and his sons 😄 He needed to make room and as the alloys are also in need of refurb he was open to offers. Full Lexus history, water pump changed 5k miles ago and the sparks changed at 60k. I'll put some pictures up when the wheel refurb is finished.

  35. This is becoming more complicated than it should be. Firstly. you're not at fault in any way. You have the Drivers name and the vehicle registration. You've notified your insurance company and given them the details of the accident. It's now up to them to find the other drivers insurance and tell them of your claim. Take your car to a repairer of your choice (not theirs). The other driver's insurance company will send an assessor and hopefully approve the amount and the claim. There is no reason to pay any excess you have on your policy, you're not claiming on your policy, you're claiming on his. Your no claim bonus will not be affected but your premium will rise (seemingly if you claim on any policy you will probably claim again; so they say) Good luck, this should not cost you a penny in any way, shape or form (apart from the increased premium) Graham.

  36. Yeah I guess you'll need to wait a few months until the IS300h has been available for exactly 5 years before it enters the Essential Care program. As long as they do the hybrid check, I wouldn't bother paying the inflated prices.

  37. The only things pertinent to the GDPR are personal names and addresses, not when a car had its last oil change or its VIN or licence plate. Any dealer trying to say otherwise needs to be put right. Even if the service records do contain such details they only have to obliterate them but leave the rest of the records intact.

  41. +1 for Michelin PS4. Every bit as grippy and responsive for spirited driving as the Pilot Super Sports that I previously had, but way quieter, more compliant and better on fuel. Just great tyres overall. You can get £40 off a set of 4 at Blackcircles just now which brings them a bit closer to the cheaper options. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk

  44. Tl:dr version: the car is great, the journalists are wrong! Full Version: I’ve had my March 2017 300h Advance for about 1500 miles now, and done quite a bit with it in this time – holiday with the family including Welsh roads, motorways and local town driving so getting a good feel of it across a good range of use and I am pleased to say I’m very happy with it so far. I thought I’d share a few of my thoughts on it, particularly to help someone considering a purchase mainly as I feel that the journalists have got this car wrong in the main, through a lack of understanding of what it actually is (a different, very comfortable cruiser that is very good to drive too) versus what they have pre-decided it should be (a German clone). This is definitely shown by the difference between user satisfaction and review scores across this car and its rivals. Reviews vs. reality Mainly the reviews seemed cut/paste efforts from whoever wrote the first one, so I’m not even convinced they’ve all driven the car! They all also seem to only review the experience on how it would be on a one lap experience of the Nürburgring and forget actual usage and living with a car is very different. However, the main areas they have all highlighted are below. They don’t like the CVT gearbox. The main reason given seems to be that it’s different to what they’re used to, rather than being worse (something the active sound control feature proves can be an issue for people initially). Some reviews highlight a lag between putting your foot down and response from the engine. I think both points are wrong. Firstly, any new car takes some getting used to, but to be honest, the CVT has taken no time to get used to at all and sound wise you can hardly hear the engine unless you slam your foot to the floor (and then it’s still reasonably quiet). Response-wise, in Eco and Normal modes I agree with the criticism, there is a noticeable lag (especially Eco – which is horrible to drive, but does improve my efficiency for non-motorway driving) but I think this is due to the hybrid system balancing battery power and engine for efficiency, not the CVT. If you put it in Sport mode and put your foot down, it flies away instantly. Maybe the reviewers did their lap in Eco? Reviews suggest driving “involvement” is poor. Having driven on a good mix of roads I think it’s just as good as the BMW320d to drive (if you’re in Sport mode). Steering is great, grip is fantastic and throttle response is immediate. Having said that, I personally think this is a motorway cruiser anyway – but no-one has reviewed it as that. I can say that as a cruiser – it’s extremely refined and extremely comfortable, but wind noise is a bit louder than I’d like (but not really that noticeable or intrusive). The CVT is a plus here too as there are no jerks at all for gear changes and the engine is always at comfortable revs. Some don’t like the interior. Again, it seems it’s because it’s not the same as the German cars. The interior is entirely subjective of course – but I’d say the fact it’s different is a positive. I also think it’s important to judge the IS300h on sitting in it, rather than from the photos – I hated the interior in the photos (and nearly ruled it out before seeing it on that basis), but loved it when I sat in it. I think the leather quality is exceptional and it’s extremely comfortable. Plus, the drink holders are in a better place! I find the German cars very boring in comparison. They don’t like the Infotainment system. Would agree here that it’s not as good as some others and it is so un-intuitive it’s ridiculous. I’ve had to refer to the manual just to use the radio! I’m getting the hang of it though and once you can use it, it’s functional. The Sat Nav looks like a 1995 version 1 sat nav – however, comparing it to the Ford SYNC system (which is far easier to use and looks better). BUT, I’ve found the maps are a lot better and I’ve not had any postcodes (yet) that aren’t in the system. The 3 routes offered (Green, Short and Quick) also seem to be sensible options. The Ford version constantly had postcodes missing and was really frustrating with often stupid route choices or re-routes round non-existent traffic. Would choose functionality over looks (but would ideally have both). Some reviews don’t like the fact it doesn’t work well as an Electric Vehicle. The fact they seem to miss is that it’s not an electric vehicle! It’s a hybrid and uses the battery to boost fuel economy rather than work as an EV. You can tell that the Hybrid tech is now pretty mature for Toyota and it works really well. “EV Mode” is indeed completely pointless – the manual says it helps pull away in silence to avoid disturbing neighbours in early morning – but you can’t turn it on until the system has warmed up! Plus, you only have to breathe near the accelerator for it to deactivate (I actually find it stays in EV mode better when you’re in Eco mode!). But as I say, that’s all irrelevant as it’s not an EV. No reviews seem to major on the advantages of hybrids vs. diesels either. Some additional useful info/niggles/good bits. MPG MILES better than I was expecting. Managing 55mpg fully laden on the motorway (normal mode), on the Welsh roads I was getting 53mpg on Eco mode, 50mpg on normal or 40mpg on Sport. Considering its petrol rather than diesel – I think that’s fantastic. Adaptive Cruise Control Love this feature in general, however it accelerates super harshly to get back up to speed (e.g. the slower car in front pulls back into the left-hand lane, the car will then seemingly use max-throttle/revs to speed back up again). Same with “resuming” speed if you’ve slowed right down. Don’t know why it’s not more gradual. It also has a tendency to slam the brakes for you too, instead of coasting to a slower speed (e.g. if reducing the speed on the control from 70mph to 50mph, it will slam the brakes on until you get to 50, rather than gently applying them or coasting). Boot Was (just) big enough for a 9 day trip (4 of us, 2 adults, 2 children), but would definitely need a roof box for 2 weeks. The annoying shape in the boot also prevents two large suitcases fitting unfortunately (you’d get them in a 3 series though). Means you have to split your second suitcase into smaller ones or bags to fit them in, which is a bit annoying. There are also no cubby holes to hide stuff in the back, and the ones in the front are pretty small. Also, no sunglasses holder! I love the interior clock! Would prefer an electronic handbrake, rather than the foot brake. It’s still taking a lot of getting used to that the engine doesn’t start when you start the car (in a really good way)!! When you approach the car in the dark (with the key), the interior lights come on (gradually of course) which I think is class! The phone doesn’t have voice recognition – only voice “tags” that you have to manually set for up to 50 contacts. That’s a step backwards from the system I had before (and used). 3 years free Lexus Roadside assistance for me and my wife is a nice addition. The DAB radio picks up more stations than I’ve been able to get on other cars. I think it looks fantastic and makes its rivals look boring. All in all, I’m very happy with the car so far, although realise I’m still in the honeymoon period with it of course. I have always known before that the period will end soon with previous cars, but in this car, I’m not so sure it will. We’ll have to see what happens when the first service comes up and how much that ends up costing! Hope this is useful for someone and interested to hear what others think.
