  1. No mine haven't failed but I have been thinking about this for a while as the matter of hybrid battery failure always gets mentioned when any prospective owner asks on this forum what to look out for on the series 3 GS450h. It is also stated that there is a higher failure rate for this model compared to other Toyota/Lexus models from the same era. Now, I am just throwing this out there to see if anyone more knowledgeable can add to or confirm or tell me I am completely wrong about this, but I'm wondering if it isn't actually the owner of the car who has inadvertently been responsible for the hybrid battery failure in the first place. I am only thinking this as the air intake vent to cool the hybrid battery on a S3 GS is situated on the rear parcel shelf or package tray and a warning notice on page 11 of the owners manual states “Do not put foreign objects over the air vent. The hybrid battery (traction battery) may overheat and be damaged.” The GS is a saloon and I have seen plenty of other makes of saloon cars with stuff on the rear parcel shelf so how many GS 450h owners may have put a coat, jacket, pet (dog!), cushions, road atlas or anything on the rear shelf without realising this and have obstructed the vent? So my question is basically could any resulting damage from overheating ultimately lead to hybrid battery failure? The other hybrid models that the GS is compared to are either hatchbacks (CT/Prius) or a SUV (RX) and they don't have a fixed rear parcel shelf so obviously the air intake vent to cool the hybrid batteries is in a different place on those cars. I don't know where the vent(s) is/are on those cars but is it a place more difficult to obstruct? As I said these are just my thoughts and I may be completely wrong but what do other forum members think?

  2. Mine neither; 3200 miles so far at 28.01 mpg. I also checked the readout vs actual mpg on the last tank. Readout = 30.8, actual = 29.19

  3. @Big Rat yes many more to come, assuming the finance gets approved 🙂

  4. Me? I never mess around.... 😄 I am being a little bit of devils advocate here, but completely honestly I think RC-F Metal is superior car to RC-F Carbon (from my subjective view). That doesn't mean Carbon is not great car and that I don't like it (except of certain elements - alcantara, no-sunroof), nor that I would not want one or not have one, but I would be expect to pay less for Carbon (gain to compensate for attributes I don't like)... obviously in reality is opposite.

  5. Another non-F to add to this thread...I wonder if one of our F cars will be still going in 20 years time, tuned to this extent and owned by such a talented haveagohero!

  6. I almost couldn't be bothered to reply because I can anticipate the response before you even type it...but nevertheless you keep saying you are on here to learn, so: The Carbon on the RCF Carbon edition is there for weight saving. Not for show. The TVD is heavier than the standard diff. The Carbon bonnet roof and spoiler mean that the car is no heavier than the standard car but has the better but heavier diff. In other words, in weight terms: Standard Car = Carbon edition Standard Car + TVD > Carbon Edition Also because the diff is lower down and the lighter carbon that is used on the bonnet roof and spoiler are higher up the centre of gravity vs the standard car has been lowered. All at no expense of refinement or luxury (except not being able to have a sunroof, which I understand is a deal breaker for you!).

  7. My ISF has the following mods; 20mm H&R spacers all round. TEIN H-Tech Springs (front only) - 25mm drop. Takeda Retain Intake. Actuator Mod - Vacuum hose delete and capped so flap is fully open all the time. H&S Cat-back Exhaust. High-level roofline rear spoiler (body colour). Carbon fibre rear bootlid spoiler. Tom's carbon fibre rear diffuser. Novel carbon fibre duct panels. Plasti-dipped front grill. With a Lexon front splitter (carbon fibre but I'm actually going body colour with it..... Controversial!) and Auto-Technic carbon fibre front fog light surrounds ready to go on soon. So, definitely not standard.

  8. I understand that the Timbuktu edition comes with a pure carbon, plastic, metal body with a sustainable real leather interior made from plastic bags, is as light as a Caterham 7 but as refined as a Bentley, does 0-60 in 2.2secs and can overtake a lorry in traffic even when there’s no space to go to. Even better apparently they have already depreciated and lost all of their value before they’ve gone on sale so it only costs £2.50 and has been engineered to have completely compatible and swappable parts with the entire Lexus range of the last 30 years, it also has a V8 that produces 500hp but is derived from the IS220d so has more torque than anything else on the road and is able to return 60mpg...but sadly it doesn’t have a sunroof

  9. Evening Dan, I honestly haven’t a clue, would only want something subtle, this is probably the only other mod I’d be doing to it......did contemplate the rear diffuser but don’t think it suits the red, sorry I can’t be much help, will have to look them up, do you have a link? paul

  10. Dear Santa I’ve been mostly good this year........ I don’t mind what Colour it is....... even if it’s not standard....... or stock or whatever the word is........ I don’t care I just want an LFA 😆 🐀

  11. Not really, I just know it is not going to happen, but I am not prepared (morally) to pay for RC-F - at current prices have no justification for it, whereas I would have for RC350. So in essence I am "subconsciously" waiting until I can get RC-F for RC350 money.

  12. And I'd better check with the forum authority on mods: Linus; does a golf tee count as a modification? If so, I'll change my vote in the poll

  13. Cheers Again for you help Colin I got it sorted. Im not going to go into detail on how i got it sorted as it could make it very easy for someone to break into your car, safe to say that it is mentioned in the link above. What had happened to me was the Actuator Arm had come off and thus operating the Remote central locking or unlocking by the door switch was not working the lock mechanism on the door lock. One bit of advise I would give anyone in this situation is:- Remove the lock and exterior handle on the good door. Put the lock back in. You will see through the Opening where the exterior Handle was and should be able to work out what to do.

  15. Hello Matt, thanks for the PM and taking the time to go look at the car - really useful info. Paul (bigrat) cheers for the comment and thanks for numerous posts on the forum - it's been really useful to read through them.

  16. Good thinking Batman ! An elementary mistake which is potentially catastrophic in a series 3 GSh. .I always keep my rear shelf clear and even put my umbrella in the boot rather than on the rear shelf. Be interesting to learn what other Forum members think.

  17. Is he not waiting for the RC 350 ? The problem with that is ze Germans will stamp all over it and we could argue all day / night /week / month / year about it getting done by a 4 cylinder turbo...😉

  18. Thank you sir, It is too late to protect, I would recommend wrapping the dark chrome grill as this cannot be touched up.

  19. Ok thanks for the info guys. I know my bushes are pretty tired so maybe it's that or springs then

  20. I believe so - and there is a direct inverse correlation between RC-F prices and the amount of keys he hits on his keyboard 😉

  21. I'm also a fan of that colour - it really suits the CT. If you are planning on keeping the car longer term, I'm also a fan of a ceramic coating. I've had a Gtechniq coating applied to my new NX, and even though it's only been a couple of months it makes cleaning so quick and easy. Not cheap though - £600 for the NX - but for me the time saved in cleaning to get a great result is worth it...and that comes from a committed detailer who used to show cars.

  23. Terrific colour, have you considered having it Ceramic coated? I had my Jaguar done and also added a clear protective wrap on the front panel. It's been 2 years now and sparkles like new with just a light wash the water runs straight off and it is also stone chip free on the front end.

  24. I am stand to be corrected, but standard car with TVD is 25kg heavier than Carbon with TVD... 25kg is a joke for 1765kg car. I think Lexus should decide - if they want hardcore lightened version.. I am fine with it, but putting all that carbon on car for pretty much cosmetic reasons and calling it a day is half wit approach.

  25. This is all common sense though? I thought Linas was just messing about? Lexus didn’t just chuck carbon on for the sake of it.

  27. Not really, compromised cooling design or moisture protection possible. Source are LOC and TOC forums - owners reporting problems. We have 10 to 1 issues with GS450h batteries compared to RX400h on these LOC forums, and the 400h outsold the GS 5 to 1 according to Lexus official UK sales figures.

  28. As well as the above there is a huge amount of information on the US Prius chat forum. This includes detail such regenerating the modules with chargers as well as re hydrating the modules. The modules "6 cells" are the same across almost the complete Toyota/Lexus range of cars making them interchangeable from one car to another. There are 40 modules in the GS450H. The battery can basically be electrically split in two by a safety link mounted on the battery. This halves the available voltage to make it much safer to work on around 140 volts. Removing copper links between modules reduces this again. If you choose a link half way along one section of the battery the voltage would be reduced to 70 volts. The average person does not feel this voltage. LOC member Richard of "Hybrid battery solutions" can repair your own battery, and give a guarantee or even rebuild it with new cells, and give a longer guarantee than Lexus does at considerable cost savings. Battery failure is rare and not the catastrophic event that the press has made out in the past. When the Prius first arrived on the scene they were saying the batteries would only last 2 years. There are now cars on the road at 15 years without problems. John

  29. I had a similar issue on my GS although both my rears were lower, just one slightly more than the other. Both my rear springs were intact and neither I nor my indi could find anything obviously worn. So I suspect my springs are just tired and could do with replacing at some point. I wasn't keen on replacing the springs to find no change so I added spacers to the springs which worked out cheaper too

  36. The windows need resetting from each door switch to make them work correctly. Open each window half way then close, and hold the switch in the closed position for 5seconds. This needs to be done any time the battery is disconnected. The fob batteries are CR1632 button cells. John.

  37. Hello Mattmech, I'm looking for an ISF and whilst this one doesn't completely do it for me, I'm interested to get a sense of the condition of the car (compare to the advert and pricing). Thanks

  38. I doubt the UK has much influence here. The 10th anniversary is available worldwide and is pretty much the same in all regions - just with keeping the existing regional differences (e.g. US doesn't get the carbon 'hood').

  40. I gave one of my mates a drive in it today who drove a newer a6 diesel 4 pot that he recently sold. He said it was the most comfortable car he he’s driven at motorway speeds, probably the fastest he’s driven and also the smoothest. He assumed it was in the class of th a7/6 series and was surprised when I told him it was the class below. Chuffed with that even even if it did hammer my average mpg a bit, haha

  41. If the guy’s worrying about a few hundred quid road tax every year, perhaps a 12-year old hybrid with the aforementioned potential battery issues might not be the best choice? They go wrong extremely rarely, but as any warranty you’ll get on a car of that age won’t be worth the paper it’s written on, maybe a petrol-only car might reduce this risk? Would an IS suit your needs?

  42. Got a call tonite from Karl in sales it seems after a long long time my isF is hopefully going to a new home abroad but a tea leaf helped themselves to the exhaust tips and they dispite there best efforts can get hold of a Upper offside one. So is there anyone on here that has one and can assist........ he’s authorised me to say that it’s a straight swap for that Matt Grey Rcf........ Big Rat

  43. Had 380gw unit fitted at Lexus Coventry a few days ago. Don’t like wires mounts etc hanging down from the windscreen so an ideal solution for me. lnitilly called in to have a look how big the units were; they had a couple in stock so was able to look at the unit and put it on windscreeen to see what it was like. Offered to fit it for me there and then, which I agreed too, so an hour later car returned with dash cam fitted (and car cleaned!) I was on my way. Got some discount as well, as I have a service plan (and LOC membership) as this is a Toyota / Lexus part number. Mine is fitted in the same position (to the left of drivers mirror) as previous photo, there is a spare mount in the kit as well, and after calling Nextbase they said no problem with spare mounts just ring them and they will send them out. Asked them about parking mode, this done is by detecting any physical movement of the vehicle I was told. Must be sensitive as I had about 6 files recorded whilst parked at work one day on reviewing the videos could not see anything so possibly wind movement setting it off. Can change sensitivity in the App. All in very pleased so far

  46. Until the divorce my wife had a Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV in the household for the daily school run and kids duties...I loved driving it for much the same reason. The suspension was ridiculously well damped and quite long travel (all that practice Mitsubishi had on the Dakar put to good use!) one of the best fun games was driving increasingly fast over speed bumps - I was getting air off of most of them! The car would simply just soak it up! Never went wrong, drove like a dream, never popped a tyre and services never picked up any damage...after 3years it sailed through its MOT with no advisories. Amazing. When the Japanese choose to do so - their engineering is peerless.

  48. Hi Dan, I'd be interested in a front splitter. I need to read up some more on Shine's products; their website is missing info in the materials section. Can anyone tell me any benefits to opt for the Kevlar version over the carbon? Apart from making my wallet lighter that is.
