  1. I bought mine on the proviso it would get through an MoT and the cloudy headlights were flagged up on there even when it passed. I used the 3M headlight restoration kit on mine which I did a while ago and then ordered the 3M clear coat wipes which I finally got around to doing yesterday and they have really finished the job off nicely. The headlight restoration kits are great for just sprucing older cars up a bit

  3. "While speedometers are calibrated to fudge the numbers a little, odometers are designed to reflect accurate mileage, Tetzlaff says." "The odometer, which directly reflects what the sensors are recording, doesn't have the same built-in inaccuracy as the speedometer. If your speedometer is off, it doesn't necessarily follow that the odometer is inaccurate too." https://www.theglobeandmail.com/globe-drive/culture/commuting/why-you-may-not-be-driving-as-fast-as-you-think/article11487709/

  5. After deciding to invest in a cheap pressure washer, snow lance and car washing stuff, I washed my car for the first time in about 20 yrs. Last time I did it I had a Punto and used washing up liquid in the water.

  6. So, the sun was shining today, so time to start getting those small jobs done. Completed today, a transmission box oil cooler (I pondered over fitting a seperate cooler, and came to the conclusion that the pro's outweighed the cons) Fitted a new serpentine belt. Wow, I have never fitted one as easy as on the LS, it's a max 3 min job, wonder how much a dealer would have charged me for this? Swapped a wheel for my spare, as tyre on was not in the best condition, but will do as a spare for now, until I can warrent a full matching set (have only had the car a few month). Tried to adjust the handbrake while the rear wheel was off, but could not figure it out today, so a job for another sunny Sunday, along with trying to fix the radio as it does not work at all, sort the speakers out and changing the timing belt when the weather improves as not a job I want to rush if it looks like rain.

  7. The GS450h I've had for 7 months has been the catalyst to the decision to buy an ES. The GS is a great car and I believe the ES will be it's equal if not better. The whole hybrid thing for me has been very rewarding and although it will be July before the car arrives I will miss the GS and it's outstanding reliability. The ES will be a keeper for me. Black paint and Topaz interior with a Premium Pack is sufficient for me and keeps the price below Β£40K. A penny over and the road tax would be Β£440 for Five years !! absolute disgrace the Government do this as just another stealth tax. Keep the price under Β£40K and it's Β£130 a year.

  8. OK, so the paint blemish was caused by a paintless dent removal carried out by previous owner. Lexus have given their usual excellent aftersales service and fixed it free of charge and also delivered back to me. This is one of the reasons I rate Lexus as the best owner experiences I have had in all my years of driving. Thanks to the guys at Exeter Lexus.

  9. in the end of the day your logic is nonsense. You seem to live in a bubble completely not in touch with reality. The saloon segment is dying regardless of what engine you put in. Guess howm many XJs Jaguar sold in 1998? - 14500. And last year just one thousand. And this is a car available with various engines. From an economical standpoint i can see Jaguar doing a Lexus, Replace the XJ and XF by 1 car only.

  10. @emjay82 started a thread on a great thread 'Elan Valley Breakfast Meet' and displayed some awesome video. I don't normally take a camera, but recently I did. So, if you've never journeyed over to Wales with us, here's are some images that depict the scenery and how an F car blends in. Let's hope Emjay82 organises another trip soon. Not sure why the images are being shown so small, you'll need to click on each one.

  13. I agree that moving from a GS450h 3.5 litre engine to a 2.5 litre ES300h will be the biggest question I will have but as we won't get the V6 ES350h in this country it's something I will have to live with. Apart from the obvious road tests I had recently of the ES it was hard to establish in real terms what owning one is like in all the areas that would be of interest. Fortunately a forum member offered to let me see his ES Takumi which he's had for a few weeks now. This was a real insight into his ownership and how useful some of the gadgetry is on a day to day basis. Although a Takumi it still uses the same 2.5 engine and when I was driving it I got no real sense of the front wheel drive being in your face compared to the GS450h rear wheel drive. Moreover the engine in the ES300 is really powerful and pulls like a train. Brakes were very impressive too. There was no torque steer at all when you accelerated hard and the sound proofing must have been given a lot of attention as it was very hard to distinguish when you were in EV mode at around 30-40mph. I was told the mpg figures being achieved in the real world was in the mid forties which sounds really good. The standard sun roof is a nice to have which I had on a LS460 but not on the GS. It is a fraction under 5 metres long and it really shows in the rear leg room, much more than the GS. The owner's car was in Sonic white with semi aniline leather in black, absolutely outstanding combination. Bigger boot space, must be due to how the battery is mounted. No space saver though. I hate those inflator kits. I have a second steel space saver for my GS so i will be putting that in the boot after I check the 5 stud dimensions on the hub and the wheel nut profile. I feel I now know what i should expect going forward. There is a really great 5 min YouTube video I came across by accident titled 2019 Lexus ES vs 2018 Lexus LS See the differences . The comparisons are remarkable and the ES looks like a smaller LS, maybe. The video has had 260,000 hits.

  14. Well Bob, that is not an easy position you seem to be in. If it was your neighbours no problem but your parents in law makes this an interesting case. Beeing non German in a German family will maybe play a role. It are the unwritten rules of a certain class that dictate the choice of clothes, houses, choice of restaurants and.. cars. Small cars like a Mini are ok if your are under 30, a decent 3 series or C class until 40 and then a Merc E or 5 series is propably needed, but.. in the right color, grey or dark blue. Going against these unwritten rules will place you outside the bubble and set you apart. What your father in law told you are really what he is afraid of the other people he knows will think ( they wont say it loud i guess). I am convinced he will accept the LS if it was your second car, a hobby vehicle. Maybe you can convince him by comparing the LS to the S class Merc. Show some clips telling the history and engineering behind it. Tell him the Lexus beats the Merc and drives circles around a 5 series. Ask him out to join you on a testdrive. If he is Ok with your choice it will make your life much easier. (and if he keeps resisting just buy it anyway!)

  16. Amazing isn't it, get away from the UK motoring press, and Lexus get more favourable reviews. Or perhaps I don't mean "more favourable" (Bob has his criticisms), but rather "less dismissive". No, an ES isn't going to compete for the accolade of 'ultimate driving machine" as some self-proclaim, instead it offers something different. Cynically, you could also speculate if Lexus spent as much on magazine and website advertising as the VW group et al, then may be the reviews would be "more favourable" 😜

  20. No idea about the next NX - sure others here will know more - but if your journies are mainly that short I'd say you are an ideal candidate for a full electric car, and hiring a conventionally powered car for occasional longer trips.

  22. Ha ha Firstly I wasn't driving it. It was my wife who said she was exiting the round about and was about to over take when it started to fish tail and eventually lost control. No damage to the wife was sustained. I am saving the verbal ear bashing for a time that suits me. You the time when you are losing an argument and you want to through in a curve ball to deflect from the actual point instead of admitting that you are wrong kind of time.

  24. 2015 car, owned from new, engine bay not cleaned ever, also based in Leicester. Had a look at the same area, clearly a dirt/moisture trap, but a quick wipe with my fingers shows all is fine. The brown bits are just bits of mud/dirt. [[

  26. Yes.. appreciate he can just delta on time post production and timing inaccuracy can be somewhat mitigated. However speedo are very inaccurate (It is mandated that speed overstates speed by law!). I woudl be happier with results if he would have attempted to at least adjust for speedo inaccuracy i.e. drive at constant 30, 50 and 70 MPH compare it against GPS speed and then average the difference e.g. maybe his speedo is ~4% overstating, so he has to get to 62MPH to reach 60MPH. Obviously, there are no way to mitigate display error on digital display, but at least we can say he had "tried"... In which case we could take his results with pinch of salt... now he is measuring fat content in milk not his 0-60... GPS inaccuracy is +/- 0.2 KMH for a record. so at 60MPH that makes up maybe ~ 0.2%... not 5-10%. Finally, I know all Lexus cars 0-60 is understated, but the method he uses to prove it just wrong.

  27. Hi Herbie The iron bars are along the central reservation.. they have been thete for a long time. With that said it does look like the lampost in question is hit fairly often. Here is a pic from google strèet maps. The iron fence was already flattend as no damage to the rear of the car. https://earth.app.goo.gl/?apn=com.google.earth&ibi=com.google.b612&isi=293622097&ius=googleearth&link=https%3a%2f%2fearth.google.com%2fweb%2f%4055.84446553,-4.47621816,12.11950688a,0d,60y,178.41514958h,102.83346258t,0r%2fdata%3dCkwaShJCCiUweDQ4ODg0YjdmNmM2ZmUxMmY6MHg0YTE4MjQ4OWJlY2Y5ZTFiGdwKYTWW7EtAIRL5LqUu-RHAKgdMaW53b29kGAEgASgCIhoKFnBtTm1TYlR1dHNfME5BamVReEtxUEEQAg

  30. The thing about the NX is that it only looks good in F sport trim. Likewise the 2016 RX450. In luxury and premier trim it looks like a generic SUV eg Quashqai, Honda SUV, Mitsubishi SUV. I have never driven an NX but without F sport trim I wouldn't even consider it regardless of how much quieter or softer the ride.

  34. I leave my cars parked up for months on end. Just remove the negative on the battery. 2-3 months shouldn't even require a recharge when starting up again (given the battery is in good condition). On the other hand, leaving the HV battery without a run for 3 months might be another thing. 12 months, as suggested in an earlier post, looks too long to me. My advice is to have it run once in the middle of this break, even if it's only run stationary to charge the HV. Best wishes with the op.

  35. Obviously you do otherwise you would never have made such a post. I would advise that you grow a back bone, it is your money and your choice nobody else's. The only person I would listen to in such circumstances is my wife as to a slight degree she can be impacted, but the choice is still ultimately mine. When you do buy the LS and the next time you are planning to go somewhere with the in-laws make sure you insist that they take their own car as obviously the wouldn't want to be seen going anywhere in a Lexus.

  38. Update My wife was p**** off to hear the whole soupd opera and her parents freak out. Of course, as a good German, she is always thibking about the 460's fuel consumption, but she admitted that the car is very confortable as f***. Just because I love her I went to a Toyota today to test a Avensis Station Wagon. Drove 40 minutes with the car. No. Just no. Not after driving the 460. Funny thing: they have the exact same price. Of course the 460's running cost is higher. Around 40% but the pleasure of driving one is 200% higher. Funny thing is that my mother in-law heard today that I would test a Toyota and said "Hey Bob, of course you can buy you a Lexus. Sorry for the mess the other day. My husband was very rude and overreacted when he heard your decision. He is nuts sometimes. Don't make any thoughts. Buy what you think is the best for you." Well, I think somebody has googled "LS 460 overview" and watched some YouTube Videos. πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ Will most probably get the 460 next week!

  40. It's your money and you will be the one driving it. If it fits with you and your own family it really doesn't matter. Just make sure that the car has been checked over and all the maintenance is up to date - they can still have big running costs...
