  1. Hi Just thought I’d share this info here (credit to the RX forum). I have just purchased 4 CrossClimate (225/45/R17) for my IS for £301 (Total Price £351, minus £50 cash back (£100 if you purchase 19”) from Michelin via prepaid credit card). Nearly into budget tyre pricing for what is very well regarded tyre, think it applies to other Michelin tyres as well. This is through f1 autocentres, but it seems on the Michelin website it has all the approved suppliers to get the cashback, which all seem relatively competitive. My local independent quoted me £460, cheapest elsewhere I could find was £380 using an online retailer. For reference, cheapest quote for the RX was over £800, using this method it was £535. The cash back deal runs out soon, but from my limited experience they seem to pretty much do a new one every quarter, so worth a check if you’re soon to be in the market for new tyres. Hope this helps someone. Daz.

  3. Over the last ten days we have driven the NC500 Highlands road trip starting at Inverness and travelling anti clockwise via John O’Groats, Kylesku, Torridon and the renowned Bealach na Ba. On Thursday we return to the start at Inverness for completion of the 500 ish mile trip. All done in our 2006 RX350 with 96k miles. The car has run perfectly, and proved a good choice for some of the tougher trails, including snow above 2000 feet yesterday on the Bealach na Bar! As it is a 350 we won’t mention mpg now will we.....but a smooth and reliable drive was what we wanted and why we stuck with a (veteran) Lexus. Here’s some pics, one taken yesterday at 2000ft as we went to the aid of a couple stuck at the top of Bealach na Bar in a snowstorm with a puncture on their BMW touring bike, plus a gratuitous shot of just one of many beautiful highland vistas we we fortunate to come across during our NC500 trip.

  4. Scuse the pointless post but no-one else will understand how ridiculously excited I am to be picking up my RX400h on Monday! My first ever Lexus although at this point anything would be better than my Peugeot! 😃

  5. Well the next mod to mine is bound to cause a few raised eyebrows, it is certainly a Marmite issue..... Wooden steering wheels..... My 2p worth.... I hate them, I can think why anyone would want to hold something so hard and cold, the steering wheel should be tactile and a pleasure to hold, after all it is the one part of the car you touch the most, a wood wheel is hard all the time, they are usually thinner than a leather one and this makes it worse, your hands sweat on them in summer and they are freezing in the winter, they serve absolutely no purpose and are just a fashion icon... And the only thing I hate more than a wooden wheel is a wood and leather one...!!! Another 2p.... They remind you what a decent wheel would feel like but then ruin it with wood where you need to touch it... If you let the wheel feed through your hands it sticks and then runs free depending on which bit passes through your hands.... So you have probably guessed what I've done.... Gone from this... (Google pic but you get the idea...!!) To this.... I had it recovered in leather by http://royalsteeringwheels.com/ They charged around £160 and it took a couple of weeks... It is about as close a colour match as you can get and it feels superb.... I really like it... if it's not to your taste they can just do the leather parts IF ANYONE WANTS TO BORROW MY SPARE WHEEL THEN LET ME KNOW... I have put a brief rundown on how to remove the wheel on my build thread..

  6. Courtesy to advise the new battery arrived and was fitted by me today. I waited until this week to order it in case I needed to fit a new one while I was away for the weekend. I did need my powerpack to start it once, but that can go back in the garage now. We had a heavy frost last night. Because my car was recently waxed, the beads of moisture had pooled before freezing, so I had mini icebergs on my boot lid. Which promptly slid off when I opened it. Very entertaining. Thanks for all the input. Jon

  8. Finally took delivery yesterday! IS300H with Premium Pack - Sonic White with Sandstone Leather and 18" Alloys - Those triple-LED headlights are fantastic... Can't believe what a difference there is between the car I remember test driving and this new 2019 MY version... Now to learn what all the bits do!

  9. On a plus side, they can’t stiff u without your consent, as for hours worked I think I’d insist on documented time not on say so.......stand your ground with the bill especially if it’s risen from quotation. all the best with it 🤞🏻

  10. Just to add a comment. First trip on the M5 today - used cruise control with lane keeping and the radar speed control. Absolute magic, perhaps rather unnerving at times, steering wheel moves under your hands to keep in lane, car slows and accelerates keeping distance to the vehicle in front. A dream of a car.

  13. I recently bought a 2014 Luxury, following five weeks when I had a 2014 Advance, slightly older and with higher mileage (although still fairly low) but I exchanged it as I found some problems which I was surprised to see on an approved model from a Lexus dealer. The exhaust had suffered some damage and an undertray had been scraped then secured with cable ties, making me question about how it had been looked after (that car is now for sale at an independent dealer). In day-to-day use a Luxury doesn't appear to lose anything from the Advance. LED headlights are probably the main thing, but the standard ones are still good. Advance has a different bumper and wheels, all a matter of taste. A lot of Luxury models seem to be upgraded with under-run trays front and rear and roof-rails, again up to you whether you like them or not - I'm happy without them on mine. The Advance I had was solid Velvet Black, which looks to be difficult to keep clean and it certainly shows swirl marks from polishing. Metallic Celestial Black seems to be a bit more forgiving, as I imagine would be any of the lighter shades. My Advance had a panoramic roof. It may be coincidence, or perhaps down to tyres, but I think the Luxury without it drives more tightly. A little more headroom too. A sunroof would have been nice, and is probably the best compromise. I only saw a stamped service book on mine, but I think any dealer can print off the previous history. I personally didn't bother with any checks beyond what the Lexus dealer does, but I wish I'd looked at the first one a bit more closely myself before I agreed to buy it.....

  16. Battery was showing 10.4 volts. With READY light on it was showing 13.5 volts. Currently on charge. It’s a Toyota battery and looks like a made in Spain sticker, can’t find a date, but, I’m guessing it’s the original battery. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  17. There is a site online that sells virtually every tyre mentioned in this post subject including Falken that fit the 400. https://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/car-tyres-225-60-16.html?partnerDomain=adwords.google.co.uk_tyres_225_60_16&gclid=Cj0KCQjws5HlBRDIARIsAOomqA2WMGI6zWGualLMpOLZ7E7YNgLllSjZ_3O4PfnOLdBQLLvl0u1uM9IaAhBREALw_wcB&xtor=SEC-24-GOO-[tyres_Tailles]--S-[tyre+225+60+16]&xts=223987#js-pag

  19. Ha ha ha, I kinda said that with tongue firmly in cheek. I already guessed they would be a heavy drain on the battery. Will have to put thicker boxers on in these cold mornings. 🤣

  20. https://www.my.is/forums/f221/diy-lsd-differential-pumpkin-swap-521817/ Found most of the required info here, build shows an IS300 but much of the same applies. For those interested the M58 is a straight swap, definitely a two person job though (when you only have axles stands and a regular jack).

  21. The Hybrid AC system is much more like your house fridge or freezer unit with no external moving parts. The reason it is driven by an electric motor is that with a hybrid the engine may not be running when the car is moving ruling out the engine to drive the compressor. For the same reason the power assistance for the hydraulic brakes is also driven by an electric motor driving a hydraulic pump to store fluid under pressure in an accumulator. The power steering is also has to be electrically driven. This is at first not noticeable, but once it is understood that the engine can be running intermittently it then becomes an obvious requirement. John.

  22. 7 years of Lexus ownership and I did not know that! Thanks for the useful clarification.
    1 point
  23. True of engine driven AC systems, but not the case with hybrids where the compressor is driven by a 3 phase electric motor housed, and sealed in the same container as the compressor. This means there is no rotating shaft with seal to dry out allowing possible leakage of the gasses used. The only seals in the system are "O" rings on the pipe joints that do not dry out. The biggest problem is the vulnerability of the condensers to stone damage as they are generally mounted without any sort of protection from road debris, and are punctured easily. John.

  24. ST4, I am thinking the same Granted I did think that the ES F-sport looked nice inside and out but that was in January but thinking on, there are things I didn’t like and looked like corners have been cut. Linas P made very valid comments about the quality of the trim. I am interested in the ES with premium pack but that sits perilously close to £40,000 For that money, I expect more and the Camry Excel certainly ticks a few more boxes than the ES saving thousands plus an extra 2 year warranty and the same sole powerplant offering People will say about Lexus quality but I think that has been curtailed somewhat in this offering. The GS I have is better in my opinion but its harsh with how it got killed off. I guess that's the way of the world now with shifts in body shape preferences etc etc.

  25. On my GS the worst creak was where the dash met the windscreen. I simply put some of this down between the two and it solved the problem. No need to dismantle anything. A bit of spray silicone helps to wedge it in. Look on ebay for double glazing rubber. It's only cheap so maybe get a couple of different sizes. I think I used 4mm. Because it's black and the top is rounded and smooth it didn't even notice.

  26. No, Shamefully still not sorted my scabby rims yet. Nor taken to plan B with the other particularly beautiful set either They are almost too good to put on the car, but as window dressing? Nothing wrong with that.

  28. Personally, I'd prefer a slightly older RX to an NX... Cost the same, but you get a better car IMHO.
    1 point
  29. Definitely the RX, had an NX for a couple of years after my IS, just couldn’t get comfortable with it. Bit the bullet and went for an RX and it’s much better. Fuel consumption down a bit compared to the NX, but not drastic.

  30. If it wasn't so far away I'd take a look just out of interest. Trouble is we've done that with our local Dogs Trust and come away with a dog on three occasions, I'd be worried the same thing would happen with this car!

  34. So my search is over! I'm now the proud owner of this car 😁 Credit goes to Mark who has added some really nice, subtle mods and kept the car in great condition. I'm going to spend the next few weeks getting used to it and enjoying it. Not got any major plans for it in the future.. nothing is needed! Looking forward to attending some events too. Cheers, Nick

  35. Yep, sounds like the collision detection. If it thinks you are approaching an obstacle and suspects you have not noticed it, i.e. you are not braking/decelerating/indicating, it will beep three times with an orange warning saying "BRAKE!" It has 3 settings (which can be adjusted via a button by your right knee). The most sensitive setting will detect obstacle from a longer distance. This can be handy in the sense that it gives you plenty of warning, but also aggravating if it warns you of a car that has stopped ahead of you when you still have plenty of time to stop. Also, on the most sensitive setting it can occasionally get confused by a car coming from the opposite direction on a narrow road or a very tight bend. It can also get confused by heavy rain or snow in the same way as the adaptive cruise control does... I believe it uses the same sensors. Personally, I find it very useful - especially when the car in front unexpectedly slows down - but like most systems it is not entirely fool proof.

  36. When I had my 2006 RX400H I stayed up in Derbyshire and woke the next morning to a couple of feet of snow, we went out all day on small country roads absolutely brilliant in the snow, you’re got good clearance and weight, standard road tyres worked well . I was well impressed.

  37. I'm looking forward to trying my 400h in the snow this year. Hopefully we'll get some. But at the risk of awakening the car forum Kraken it's going to be all about the tyres. Put decent all seasons or winters on and you could drive virtually anything in the snow. Hell, keep the LS, put some skinny winters on it and post the videos here Vehicle aside for a second I ran Nokian winters for a couple of years and then Pirelli all seasons on our XC90. Like the 400h it ran FWD most of the time (Haldex) and with the winters it was unstoppable in proper deep you're-stupid-driving-in-that snow and never had any problems with the all seasons but just took things a little more steady. I'd imagine the 400h will be much the same Can't comment on the 300 but the 400 is a quiet, comfy cruiser but also has a nice V6 note when you give it some beans. But like most you'll no doubt become obsessed with trying to run it on battery and regenerate when you can. It's extremely addictive. If you ever see a dark grey one silently cruising around Sheffield at about 15mph and holding up the traffic, that's me

  38. I can’t get hold of the manual!! I am one of those people who actually wades through the whole manual on a new car so I know it inside out. Annoyingly two months into NX ownership and still not up to speed on Sat Nav.....useful things like how to modify your route and avoid delays that appear. Pedantic I know! I booked into the dealers to see salesman to get him to go over it but he was “busy with another customer” when I arrived at the agreed time. If anyone does get hold of the manual please let us know Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  39. Really odd, isn't it? I have my phone down as my only "favourite" WiFi connection but there is still a risk of "interference" at the outset, I find. However, generally, if the Personal Hotspot page is open it works - and even if it doesn't, it usually offers to connect when you need it.

  40. I also bought a touch up paint kit which consisted of a large aerosol of "Lexus Dark Silver" water based, another large aerosol of clearcoat and one of these. Plus I got no instructions at all!!! I haven't tried it yet!
