  1. This is a follow up to a brief comment I made recently about S mode being useful on winding roads. The problem is that the box doesn't know what's coming, so it holds 6 as you slow say from 60 to 40, then realises a couple of downchanges are needed as you accelerate away after the bend. This gets somewhat tiresome on a twisty road. It's long, so if you can't be bothered reading, skip to the end for a brief summary! OK - yesterday we drove way up north to our holiday haunt in the highlands. The route includes a section on the A93 from Blairgowrie to Braemar (about 38 miles) - it's one of my favourite roads as it is a nearly continuous series of bends with a very few straight sections. I thought I would run a little experiment - as we left Blairgowrie I selected S mode and held 4. The road has a 60 limit except for a short 30 section through Bridge of Cally. We encountered just one other vehicle travelling north - a motorhome, fortunstely on a rare straight section so easily disposed of. The box held 4 through almost all the bends - speed on this raod is limited more by passengers' stomachs than anything else - not only does it have lots of substantial G corners, it also has a lot of gut-wrenching ups and downs, often coinciding with a corner - the full 3D experience! After the Glenshee ski centre, the road changes character and becomes a glorious series of interlinked fast (er...about 60 mph) open bends so I flipped to 5 for the long but gentle (~1800 ft in 8 miles) descent to Braemar. The result - 1 - yes one - downshift to 3 on one tight right hander in the 30 mile stint before the ski centre and one downshift from 5 to 4 on a tighter than average (on that section) bend after. 4 is good for a wide range of speed from 40 ish to over 100mph. 5 is better if the bends are OK for 50 - 60 mph. And progress is so smooth (except for the G forces!). We averaged ~51 mph over the section of our route (which is about 350 miles altogether). Summary - A93, 38 miles in 45 minutes, over 100 bends, one easy overtake, 2 gearchanges (4 if you count the subsequent upshifts), one not-quite-sick wife! Driving can still be fun - it's just that most of us have to go a long way to find the right roads! And S mode is brilliant in the circumstances - smooth pick up out of the bends.

  3. Hi all, I may have posted this twice🤪( sorry I’m new to forums) Just putting up a few pics of my Lexus RX400h as requested, as I said previously I’m really happy with it. I want to upgrade a couple things but I’ll ask advice here at a later date.

  4. Have given the latest incarnation a try but found it pretty difficult to get along with. Not quite sure why but it just doesn't connect with me anymore. Not sure they are doing loads wrong although the German lady had the same effect that Jar Jar Binks did in the Star Wars prequels. Ie bloody irritating. Not sure the total change of Guard is responsible either as the final days of Jezza and co were getting tedious in my opinion. Too many smutty, juvenile jokes and a presumption that the average viewer is 15 years of age. Think this show peaked around ten years ago if you ask me. I used to actually prefer it when they reviewed cars a bit more rather an messing around in or reviewing supercars that the majority of us will never own.

  5. I thought it was about time I joined this club, I have had my CT for 5 months. I visited my Lexus showroom in November with the view of gaining as much information as I could about the CT it was really a fact finding mission, I didn’t know anything about hybrids and never driven an automatic before. I just knew that I wanted to change my car in the new year. I wanted a 4 door and a car that didn’t break my back and would fit in our garage as parking is a nightmare where I live. My car at the time was a fiesta ST a great car but boy was the suspension hard, and it was a nightmare trying to keep to the 20 mile speed limit constantly up and down the gears. It was a quiet afternoon at the dealership, so I got a salesman to take me for a drive as a passenger in one of their demo cars I wanted to see what it sounded like and how It performed. When we returned I started looking at the the pre owned cars with the view that I would know the differences between the car models and the packs which were available should I order one in the new year. Then I saw it, a CT200h F sport Premiere in Azure Blue, it looked amazing. The salesman asked if I wanted to sit in it at first I said no but could feel myself being drawn to the car so in the end agreed. I could see the differences compared to the demo car it had a sunroof, bigger screen etc It only had 2900 miles on the clock, it was a staff members car who left. I went home and couldn’t get the car out of my mind, even though I hadn’t driven it. I love gadgets and this car had it all dipping wing mirrors when parallel parking (which I love) Two days later I phoned for a test drive in this car as I wanted to check the suspension of the F sport, didn’t want to make the same mistake as the ST after reading reviews on here about a hard suspension. Ten minutes into the test drive I wanted this car, the suspension was like driving a bouncy castle, I made sure I drove around the same streets for a fair comparison. After the test drive the deal was done. For city driving the CT is great and so comfortable, which is probably 90% of my driving but it’s no slouch on a motor way, It’s slower picking up speed than my ST but a much more enjoyable journey. 5 months in on an impulse buy, I am still loving this car. Here is a picture of when I first saw my car.

  8. Well a week or so later and I have made up my mind...... It is going to be the NX Premier. I found the RX a bit daunting in size and felt it would be an absolute devil to park in tight multi storey car parks. It is gorgeous though and so wide inside, or so it felt. So after a few days humming and haa-ing and after test drives, I plumped for the NX. My son in law has the F Sport version, so I knew the interior was going to be good. It was nice to see one with a few more bells and whistles on it though 😂 Getting in and out of the NX was easy too, which was my main self-afflicted gripe over the IS we currently have. It will be a shame to say goodbye to the IS because it is a lovely car to drive, just a bummer getting out of it at my age, old fart that I am 😜 We collect the NX on Friday. It is a 66 plate in Mercury Grey, with about 38k miles on it. The interior looks great, no sagging seats or marked interior despite the higher than normal mileage. Looks like I will have to change my nom de plume on here now 😊 Thanks for all the comments and suggestions too, they did help.

  9. I have whole spare mirror, less glass (because it was broken). As I the passenger door mirror works, I doubt it is fuse (but there might be separate ones). Even if relay is bad for heater it should not affect the mirror controls, as well if mirror taps the glass I reckon it is broken mechanically as well, that should not happen. Anyway if you need spare mirror let me know.

  15. There's a radio/audio repairer up our way who takes out the security chip ( where possible) to ready the radio to work without the code. Jim Hall Wrekenton Gateshead 01914872995. I've got a couple of MK2 GS300 head units which may have the same audio bits as the LS. If that was the case then it's only a matter of unscrewing the unit from the facia.

  17. Well it's a thumbs up from me for this tip. Tried it over the weekend and it worked. Small inconvieneince in having to use the key fob to open the car again, but something I will soon get used to. Thanks for sharing. 👍

  18. I had seized slide pins and lexus wanted £300 per caliper, two of them. Took it to local garage for mot and they freed them and said it wasn't bad. Might be worth taking them somewhere and getting them looked at or having a go yourself.

  19. Sounds normal, like Mark says. It's not a hill holder like a braked system as such, just a happy feature of TC gearboxes.

  21. Lots of owners never entered a code from new. Usually the code is the last 3 digits of the vin. This worked for me when I had a MK3 LS400.

  22. I think that's normal for a torque converter automatic. It's a simple equation of energy, with no throttle there is a small amount of power going to the transmission and this makes the car creep forward on a flat road. On a mild incline this forward momentum can be counteracted but facing up a steep hill there just isn't enough forward torque to keep it from rolling back.

  23. If anyone tells you they’re going to “flush” your transmission - run. You don’t want this, at best it will do nothing of any use and at worst it may cause problems. All you want is a drain and fill and a new filter, unless the filter is sealed inside the unit in which case you may want to do a double drain and fill.
    1 point
  24. You don't want to routinely run it this low. The fuel in the tank cools the fuel pump and also the more fuel there is the more head pressure there is on the pump meaning it doesn't have to work as hard. If you routinely run your car down to where the light is going to come on you will be putting a lot of strain on the pump. Fill up when you get to the halfway point and your fuel pump will last a lot longer.

  25. If you're local to me then I would only go to the main dealer as a last hope. Go to Ribble View Garage, 2A Rough Hey Rd, (that industrial estate opposite the Crematorium) Preston PR2 5AR - phone 01772 798856. It's run by a guy called John Barton who really knows his stuff. He's a great worker, very fairly priced and highly recommended.

  26. If it's done 192k and the transmission has never been serviced then I kind of understand where those garages are coming from to be honest. The fluid is what helps the seals stay pliable, if it was never changed then failing seals are inevitable and at that mileage it's likely there's a lot of wear elsewhere in the transmission. From their point of view, they could open it up and change the seal but if it fails and quits moving the week after you'll be back at them complaining when in all likelihood it would just be a coincidence because of it's age and the (I'm guessing) lack of proper maintenance. If you really like the car it might be worth looking for quotes for either a rebuilt replacement transmission or a rebuild of your unit. Probably less than buying another RX and if the rest of the car has been well looked after it might be a case of the devil you know being better than the devil you don't. I have heard that the transmissions on the early RX models are weak but it sounds like you've got a pretty decent run out of yours. It's not entirely clear from your post whether the oil that's dripping is engine oil or transmission fluid. If it's engine oil then one option is to just keep topping it up and carry on driving it. Not great for the environment but much cheaper than anything else 🙂

  27. Thanks m4rkw, a pipe to the oil cooler fractured in a lonely part of Scotland and l lost oil, carried to a local garage pipe fixed and oil added the drip started on the way back south and gets worse after a run stopping when the engine is turned off. have tried various fix it oils but keeps on dripping, have been told that a seal has gone in the gearbox and it would have to come out to repair, local garages don't want to take it on as the view is one thing always leads to another they argue and it could get out of control! I can understand this but l have had it a long time and as you may understand it's not just a car! The car has done 192k and apart from this has been super. l will pop into lexus Preston but don't hold out much hope.l do know l won't be buying a new one without the help of lotto.

  28. Following yet another Keyless Car Fob theft in my street this week, I tried the Fob Disabling Method given by another reader to this site. (You can just switch off your key fob. If you press and hold the lock button and in the same time press quickly twice the unlock button the key fob stops the transmitting. So no one is able to catch the signal. Of course, it is not very convenient to do it every time but you can decide whether to do it or not. There is one more benefit - in this way you will safe your Battery life for long time), for the first time. The little lights on the key fob flashed to acknowledge buttons have been depressed. AND IT WORKS TOTALLY, PERFECTLY, SIMPLY (and hopefully) EVERY TIME. I stood next to the car, waived the fob in every direction - even tried to open the car door with the same hand that held the fob - NOTHING OPENED!!!!! And to activate the fob, just push any button - and it returns to normal!!!! Dont take my word for it .................try it! Good luck and safe car retention

  32. Got a Lexus ES30h on Tuesday as my new company car fleet lease. My previous was an IS300h so I was familiar with Lexus and the Hybrid drive. I've driven it for a few days and have to say I love it and its a huge leap forward. Much bigger especially length wise. Got it in Sonic titanium with Sandstone tahara. My work budget couldn't run to the extra pack to the base model sadly. (so relatively Poverty spec lol). Drives fantastic very solid and smooth - reassuring. Made to glide along in comfort I would say. Infotainment much improved. Radio especially DAB loads better than in the IS. Navigation seems better also but the mouse pad is taking some getting used to and seems fiddly with the nav especially - very difficult to zoom in and out without the rotary dial. Most reviews seem to concentrate on the Takumi so I will concentrate on the base model and the negative info I struggled to find out beforehand. No auto wipers - (at least I can't find them so far) - not too bothered but seems to be standard on other models so a bit surprising. Speakers in the back are barely there hardly any sound can be got out of them even when putting the fader fully at the back. I mean its OK but again relatively poor given the cost of the car. Petrol tank capacity has been reduced to 50 litres I believe from my previous IS 300h 66 I think it was. I do drive long distances so will probably be at the fuel station more. You get power adjust seats in the front including lumbar adjustment but no memory on the base model of course. Steering wheel is power adjust for reach and height and automatically moves away on entry and exit! Very nice! Cornering lights included which I did not know about beforehand. Footwell illumination front and rear and handle illumination inside and out. Pop up headlamp washers which are nicer than the IS. Heated seats are more powerful than the IS - they were a bit feeble in the IS. Theres loads more interior and boot room than the IS which is what I wanted. Overall I absolutely love it and keep looking at it and wanting to drive it all the time! Very very impressed and happy.

  33. Last time I watched was when Clarkson and co went to Argentina and ruined it for UK people to safely drive through that country at any time in the future .... by being arseholes in upsetting those poor families with lost members who died in the Falklands war AND that was a journey that I really really wanted to do in a Ls400 too Malc

  34. I haven't watched it for many years. It's a shame we can't have a real programme about cars, much like Top Gear used to be 20yrs ago. I remember when the satellite boxes used to be analogue, there was a German car programme I watched occasionally. I say "watched", as I don't speak German, but that was very much like the Top Gear of old. Interesting and informative. Not a comedy programme.

  35. I watched it last night, I think I got used to presenters now and especially since Evans left I think the program is not bad. A shame they don't do more reasonably priced cars on show as they used to.

  36. Recorded it watched it later for 5 mins, found it infantile and tedious to waste any more of my life on it. Why do they insist on having a washed-up American actor as the main presenter because as the world knows already Americans know nothing about cars?

  41. main differences - steering response is much better, the car isnt rolling in the beds or corners, just feels tighter in general. Seems to have shaved years off the cars age. I would recommend others to get them changed too if that havent already done so, gives the car a totally different feel. havent tested the brake vibration yet as didnt take it on the motorway. The car is still at the garage, waiting for the radiator to arrive so that can be changed with the gearbox service and pipes.
