  2. £1300? My 2000 ls430 has a couple of faults. The radio/cd/cassette player doesn't work which means it wafts along in total silence and the rake on the steering doesn't work but the reach does but I manually set the rake for my needs. Admittedly the headlights need a polish which I have done myself in the past so no biggy. It has a mark on the rear bumper and the nearside front. It has done 140,000 miles (so it's run in now), cambelt done, never failed an m.o.t, comprehensive service history, and a detachable tow bar. The m.o.t ran out last year as I now am using another car more suited to towing my caravan and my wife finds it easier to get in and out of the jeep as she's disabled, in five and a half years of ownership I have replaced a couple of tyres, a battery and an offside front wheel bearing. I turn the key every month or so and it fires up first time. What pi55es me off is I put it on eBay a couple of times ages ago and was made an offer of £500! I'd rather keep it on my drive and get the pleasure of seeing it every day even if I'm not using it. The jeep is ok and I quite like it but it's like comparing a limousine to a tractor. 3. I'm sure I'm not the first person to have spotted this LS430 on ebay but today I took the train to Brum to have a look, armed with a checklist that someone had written on here in another thread and here are my thoughts. The car has a Stag LPG system (One of the best from what I can gather from reviews) with the fill nozzle built into the petrol tank flap bit. It ran very sweetly and quietly but I couldn't drive it myself to test it properly - the chain-smoking salesman took me round the local industrial estate and used all the horses he could. Fast, smooth and quiet but I'd have liked a good 5 mile drive to get it warmed up properly and to test the cruise control. Now for the bits that put me off... The electric windows worked, but were very slow. Probably just needed greasing up but as with all electrical things, you never know. The mirrors folded in as they should but the auto-dip when you select reverse didn't and neither did either of the motors to adjust the mirrors. The steering column adjusted for reach but not tilt. I couldn't get the boot to open using the key (that could just be me though). The bonnet struts needed replacing and should there have been something to pull in the boot so that you can open the petrol flap if there's an electrical failure? It wasn't there if there is supposed to be one. Not only was the rear bumper damaged, the parking sensors didn't work, the front passenger door seemed to not fit right at the bottom and the headlights could've done with a polish. There was no history with it and when I checked the gear oil, it was the colour of the Submit Topic button just below where I'm typing, well a bit darker to be honest but you get the idea. It's probably worth £1300 (that was his offer price) to somebody as a runaround or for spares but a bit too much for me. He also said he got it straight from the Lexus dealer on the estate...there was a definite whiff of Arthur Daley but more cheap woodbines than cigar smoke. That said, it was good to have a good look around it and to learn what to look for.

  4. Hi all, thank you all for quick and very useful suggestions Really appreciate this I went to see the neighbour (I saw him parking, gave him 15 minutes and went to see him myself), he was actually really nice, admitted the fault and gave his details and said he doesn't mind if I go through insurance, he will call his insurance as well. So, lets the insurance saga begins! I just hope it will be quick and painless! Once, again, thank you all! I will keep this post updated with how it goes.

  9. Hybrids are in great demand as the price rises over the last few months in the secondhand market demonstrate. The problem is more likely that it's an NX, which does beg the question, if you're a tall person why didn't you go for the larger RX? A little bit of research on the e-CVT and hybrid drivetrain would have allowed you to understand how they operate and, although a bit noisier when giving it beans, they are much better than a 'traditional' auto box in almost every way - just turn the radio up I've got a late 2013 car so I have no idea how that compares to a 2019 in respect of the infotainment system, but I'm happy enough with mine except for the abysmal satnav and there I do agree with you - I just use Waze on my phone and have the Lexus screen showing anything except satnav. I'm truly sorry that you haven't been able to enjoy your new car but I'm afraid the problems don't really lie with Lexus, in all fairness.

  11. Hi all, Sorry for the lack of response I've been caught up with work and other such mundane activities! Thank you for all your responses, it's been an interesting read. Sorry I can't respond to you all individually. However, there is a new chapter in this story. So, I took the car to my local independent today. I explained the situation and showed them the estimate I had been given by Lexus. After laughing for quite a while and actually running off with the quote to show other mechanics out in the bay I was directed to get my car up on the lift. In their opinion there was NOTHING wrong with the brake pipes and certainly nothing to warrant an MOT failure. They reached in with a bit of emery cloth on the 2cm of offending 'corrosion' and promptly stepped out to say 'they were trying to have you bud'. Car is now booked in for the MOT again this Tuesday as they couldn't fit me in today but they see no reason at all the car should pass without issue. This has obviously only gone to fuel my anger and disappointment in Lexus Swindon. I've already sourced by replacement discs (Brembo) and pads (EBC YellowStuff) for a total of £537.01, a little less than my original estimate and a clear £4984.43 less than what they estimated. I'll put a hold on the exhaust for now which will deffo need a full replacement unless I get a fabricator involved as suggested. There's no rush on this and it will be a nice excuse for a cheeky upgrade in the future. The 'leaking' radiator was nothing more than a historic weep which has since sealed itself (for now). It's bone dry, just got old residue sitting around a small part area of the rad. Anyway, needless to say I will learn this lesson only once - I'll never return to Lexus even if it does mean losing my dealership stamps on servicing. All the best Dar

  12. I haven't taken a car to a dealer or garage for MOT for years. I always use the local council MOT testing centre. They have no interest in failing items in order to get your business as they don't do any maintenance work, except to the council's own vehicles. I feel much more confident that they're giving an honest opinion.

  13. Hello, Just seen that Lexus Stockport is sponsoring the local Didsbury (Manchester) car show on the 14th July 10.30-4PM. What's exciting is that they are also bringing along the LFA! This would be a great opportunity to make a meet of it and if we bring our 'F's like previous meets we get to shine and show off our motors. Apart from it being a great show (I've been visiting it the last few years) is that its free to attend with your car but you do need to register (link is here) Who is up for it? 😉

  14. Hi guys, I put 2 Michelin Cross-Climate tyres on the front in December and have just spent a sizeable amount of money on a new exhaust plus new discs and pads for the MOT. The car is due its 110000 service with Lexus (Glasgow) in 4 weeks time. My mechanic said I would need one new rear tyre in about 1-2 months time, but I would never put one on so will be looking to replace both rear tyres. What with summer holiday almost upon me and being a poorly paid Civil Servant (sympathy vote required here), can any member recommend a decent mid-range tyre for me please. I only do about 7000 miles a year..... Cheers

  15. Hi all 😄 So, had my 2008 ISF in for an airbag recall this week. As the MOT was due in a few days I asked that they (Lexus Swindon, UK) undertake this for me too. Anyway, airbag replacement, no sweat. MOT, failed. Darn it! Excessive rear brake pipe corrosion. Quote to fix : £1390.31. I raised my eyebrows somewhat at this but wasn't massively shocked thinking it might be relatively awkward on this car so let it slide. Notwithstanding I can source 12ft copper pipe and replacement connectors for £15.99! Add a brake pipe flaring tool at circa £40.00 for good measure. Where it got really interesting was the 'advisories'. Front discs and pads - £2687.83. When choosing to do this myself with non-blue print but high carbon, perforated discs (£151.00) and EBC yellow pads (£143.48) so a total of £294.48 Rear discs and pads - £2833.61. When choosing to do this myself with non-blue print but high carbon, perforated discs (£160.16) and EBC yellow pads (£131.39) so a total of £291.55 So a total cost to me for both axles, fit DIY as a simple job, £586.03. Note that I could have bought genuine OEM Lexus discs and pads, full set, for £589.99 just on a cursory search. Obviously I will replace the flexy pipes too so add £200-300 or so. Radiator leak - £1120.37 Near side tail back box (one of the mounts had rusted and broken) - £545.17 So, at total dealer estimate of a staggering £8577.29! This equates to just over 50% of what I paid for the car last year. Even factoring in labour this is an absolute outrage. It's certainly no more than a 2 day job and that's being generous. I've not looked into the radiator and exhaust yet but I can be sure it will be nothing close to what Lexus wanted to charge me. Anyway, after I quietly lost my shi*t and said to them 'Well it's a scrapper then eh!?' they even had the audacity to suggest I sell the car to them for sub-trade price. I was flabbergasted! I did check the mirror afterwards to make sure I didn't have 'MUG' written on my forehead. Has anyone else experienced this level of ridiculous quoting? I completely expect to pay a level of premium on a performance car but this goes way beyond reasonable. Needless to say Lexus stealerships will never get any future business from me. I love the ISF, best car I've ever owned but this has left a real sour taste in the mouth. Dar 🙂

  18. The resale point is interesting, especially as a) the NX has one of the highest predicted residual values after three years of any mid-sized SUV (53% according to What Car?) and b) just this week I had an email from Lexus asking to buy my car, even if I didn't buy another one as they need stock. If I were a dealer I'd be concerned at buying a three month old car if it wasn't my marque. Most won't be able to retail it themselves, so will need to trade it. When I was trying to move on my VW Tiguan diesel, I had two dealers who wouldn't offer on it as it had the DSG gearbox, even though it was under warranty and had just had the gearbox replaced. In the end I traded it in at a massive loss. That's how life works. If you need to sell, and a dealer knows it, then you can't expect a good deal... ...should also add that this time last year when I moved from NX #1 to NX #2, the dealer put my old NX up for sale for MORE than I paid for it one year earlier!

  20. Also check that the arm from a height sensor isn't broken because they do break. This is from a different vehicle but the long arm or rod at the end is similar. Is it down on one side or both?
    1 point
  21. Hi Sean You either have a leak in the air system or the ride height sensor is faulty. You could try to diagnose a leak by listening for escaping air whilst the air compressor is running. Failing that it will need to go to a garage - preferably one with air suspension experience Hope you get it sorted soon

  23. Hello all, thanks in advance for your advices; what i did in the end is to place the jumpstarter in the trunk and solar panel on dashboard. The battery is now brand new should see if all worked in couple of months and worst case scenario, workaround will be waiting in the trunk. @Geoffers as far as i am aware, the 400h doesn’t have keyless entry. Can you please clarify what do you mean?

  24. Blackcircles have the 19" CrossClimates listed at £169.99 each, fully fitted at various local dealers (I have four to choose from in my local area). Apparently there's a 10% discount code that can be applied, which brings it down to just over £300 a pair. Asda's online tyre thing sounds similar to the above, they're listing them at £167 each (but no mention of any discount code).
    1 point
  25. If you don't need tyres urgently and want cross Climates why not wait around until Michelin are next doing their cash back offer. I've done it twice now and they give you a preloaded debit card. Usually do these offers twice a year. For 4 tyres on both my GS and RX I got £100 back both times. Ended up costing £650 for 4 Cross Climates from my local independent dealer Chris Mullins in Gloucester.

  26. Have a look at Goodyear Vector 4Seasons Gen 2 Performance-wise these tyres and the Michelin Cross Climates are almost identical in every way but I'm not sure about price of either brand. If buying online don't forget to go through https://www.topcashback.co.uk/home as you may get a few quid back from there.

  27. Lots of useful info in this discussion following my first post. I've posted a photo of my 13-reg 300h, for which I paid £12250, which I judged a fair price. It's a Luxury version (whatever that may imply, and clearly from earlier posts the spec can vary widely) - but it has reversing camera and cruise control, although not adaptive (which I mistrust anyway.) Leather heated seats, etc etc. The only thing I miss from my LS430 is the driver's seat position memory (an odd item to exclude from a luxury spec, but there you are.) I'm managing regularly to achieve better than 50 mpg by careful driving technique - select cruise early, no blipping the throttle, careful braking, etc. I reckon I'm set for the next 5 years, by which (optimistically) the car will have paid for itself and at 82 I'll be in a rest home.

  29. Morning all. The join at the flexi / metal bracket is certainly in an exposed place and would be subject to being peppered by water and muck from the tyres. Certainly, from looking at the area from the side with the wheel removed, it does look like the pipe disappears up behind the arch liner. But it doesn't. It goes up about 7 or 8 cms, then rearwards for 3 or 4 and then down again to make a 3 sided rectangle. And as far as I can see when on my back, then goes towards the centre of the car. As I mentioned, there is ample room and pipe to effect a repair if desired. Perhaps this can't be seen if the original silencers are in place. Hopefully these incidents will inspire other owners to inspect and protect.

  30. Why would that bother you? Our IS is a 15 plate, bought new, its by far the most reliable car we have owned, and we've had 7 Nissans and 2 Hondas between us in the past!!! The hybrid drivetrain is essentially the same as the Prius, and there is a good reasons why Taxi drivers love the Prius. In over 4 years of ownership I've never had to add a single drop of oil, coolant, and its still on original factory tyres!!! The Premier has all the toys you could want, even compared to a brand new 2019 car from other brands. I've tired very hard to find a reason to sell the IS for another car, but ever time when I do the numbers the IS just comes out leagues ahead of any other car. £10/VED, a true 45mpg all year round, £200/year service at independent garage, rock solid reliability, no risk of been banned/fined even if ULEZ becomes national, very slow depreciation for a £40k+ list price car. Our IS300H is in no way the most 'loved' car we have owned, and I'm not going to miss it when it goes - even our old diesel Civic beats the IS for 'character' with its turbo lag/wine and good old torque steer, but as a tool to get you from A to B in comfort (main job of any car) it's one of the best cars we've owned!! And honestly I think it'll end up been in the family till it dies, which is going to be a long long long time into the future.

  31. My background is similar to yours Herbs, although I started with my Dad's help with motor cycles stripping and rebuilding engines and a gearbox on a real 'Bitza' motor cycle I put together before moving on to cars of which I have had many over the years. (I am rather older than you but arthritis is taking it's toll - the main reason I bought an SUV). I am presently breaking an E39 530i sports BMW to complete the conversion of my SE model to nearer the spec of the sports model. It's a pity the donor will be then be scrapped because there are some good parts that it's not worth the time and effort to remove and advertise for the possible return. Anyway, more to the point, I do agree with you about using recommended fluids (particularly oils). That is why I was being pedantic and asking about what engine oil members have in their cars because according to the Mobil Tec I spoke with, Lexus/Toyota don't suggest any particular brand other than what is packaged Toyota oil and Lexus Cheltenham put in Mobil Super 3000 OW 0-20 which I understand was formulated principally for Volvo cars. But is this the same oil? Maybe all Lexus dealers use the same as Cheltenham but it seems nobody who has answered knows what has been put in their cars even if its so good that it doesn't burn off or evaporate whatsoever!

  32. @PRT68 They failed the whole pipe which was an outright fabrication. On inspection today the point where something could have been actually observed as a 'point of interest' would have been at the far end of the rear of the hard pipes where they couple with the flexi pipes. There was a 2cm length of rust which would have been creep from the coupler which has a lot of surface rust. Wire brush and emery cloth exposed there was no detrimental corrosion at all.. Dar
    1 point
  33. Yep Paul @PRT68 that's where mine was corroded, and very corroded too. Strange as the rest of the underside of the car is in very good condition. I could have had the car recovered from Lexus Derby to somewhere else and had them piece in a repair up behind the arch liner for a fraction of the price but is done now. In engineering terms an extra joint would be fine but feels like bodging up your brakes so I have no regrets I went with replacing both pipes.
    1 point
  34. There is nothing wrong with servicing your car yourself if you know what you are doing but don't go beyond your capabilities, Use good quality parts and fluids, appropriate torque settings etc. it's not just to save money but to be assured that the job has been done properly at a time of one's choosing. That means finding out detailed information about the car, it's service requirements and at least equal if not exceed them. An example of this is brake fluid where on the reservoir cap it says use only DOT 3, whereas DOT 4 and DOT 5.1 are compatible but have higher boiling points (DOT 5 is quite different and is not compatible) so car will get the DOT 5.1. During the life of a car it is also probable that refiners will further improve their oils in various respects so I feel it is worth keeping this under review. I have just had the 4 year/40,000 mile service done by Lexus with a view to keeping the value of the car as high as possible should I have to sell it ,(hopefully not for many years) and also to help support any goodwill claim that may arise. However, there will come a time when it it is no longer sensible to use even the lower price scheme Lexus have for older vehicles and at that point leave any big jobs to an independent and just do servicing myself. This is what I have been doing with my BMW.

  35. You shouldn't need to be topping up - Ive never had to on any Lexus. Or actually, any car unless its eating through it or losing it from somewhere

  36. Just been looking at my rear brake pipes. Fortunately able to see them without jacking the car up. This I'm possibly able to do because mine has a modified exhaust with very small rear boxes. I should think the large stock boxes would obscure the view. I can see where the flexi joins the metal pipe at the mounting bracket, and there is no corrosion at all. I can even see numbers printed on the pipes. I'm assuming that's where gb1600e experienced his problems. If it was, there does appear to be enough exposed pipe to allow a repair with a short section of new pipe and a join. To do a thorough check would obviously require inspection on a lift. Be interesting to know where DarISF's failure was. My car is a June 2011 model.

  37. 6 A good friend, now retired as a tool fitter who then went on to teach, and was involved with all sorts machines requiring drive belts and cam belts over his 40 year career. His view was he had ‘ never ‘ seen a belt fail through the belt wearing out. The belt failure was always caused by something else failing, invariably the water pump seizing, which kind of supports Malc’s experience.

  40. This.... It's embarrassing how much Lexus want for them. I have run ECP Brembo discs/pads and also discs from MTEC Brakes. All been perfectly fine. My Brembo discs from the dealer are the only ones that have cracked on me while on track. I am currently running ECP Brembo discs and Ferodo DS2500 pads at the front. A lot cheaper than Lexus (although pads were about £250) and lot better (pads certainly) than Lexus direct. And as for the exhaust, I am fairly sure you can't get a nearside or offside back box replaced. The whole thing is one unit (I know as I have one since replacing my exhaust). If it's just the bracket that needs replacing then a fabricator can make one for you for a fraction of the price.

  41. I’ve had Lexus for many years and after two of them purchased with f/l/s/h both had the same maintenance schedule ignored, I swore other than recalls I’d never pay ANY main-dealer another visit let alone a penny!......I’m not car maintenance orientated but I use Westfield Lexus specialists in Rayleigh which isn’t far from me, they’re half the price of main-dealers and far more informative and knowledgeable being both old school and Toyota/Lexus background.....as for exhaust I had a cat back with resonator removal for £720. The garage I used was “Pipe Craft” in Basildon, Dean was excellent and half the price of others, Paul

  42. Well, that's the second ISF to go down on brake pipes in a month. The first a 2009, and now a 2008 model. Looks like preventative measures are needed. I'll be having my wheels off, wire brushing, rust treating and greasing mine.

  43. I think to put it in context, and I do agree it is an unreasonable quote, this is a big reason why cars depreciate so much, which enables us all to own fabulous cars. In defence of Lexus they do give excellent warranties and in comparison with the German brands, they are much fairer. I remember when Japanese cars came into this country, they have always had a brilliant reliability record and if they were properly serviced, by the agent that understood the car, they rarely needed repair. But.....if they did go wrong.... expensive. I also think that it needs to be understood that if you want an agent with premises , they have to make profit. They certainly don’t make it from selling new cars these days. I, like most of you, use a good independent , insisting on only Lexus Original Parts ( my choice) because the main agent cost would make running the car uneconomic, but I still need the main agent to remain in business.

  44. Disc's and pads cost are utterly ridiculous, Lexus Coventry quoted me ~£800 to replace front discs/pad which i thought was steep, i paid £150 for Brembo pads and disks from ECP during a 50% off sale.

  45. Tyres are as much a subject of antipathy and heated posts as most other topics that create a lot of theory and opinions. Such as Oil, whether to run the A/C all the time etc. Simply put: ANY tyre with the right speed and load rating will be better than bald ones. Having the bald ones on the rear is never a good option... I've recently bought a 2000 model Lexus RX300. It has all the hallmarks of an expensively and presumably well maintained car, lots of receipts Yet it had three different makes of tyre on it, two 6 year old Cooper things a 2018 built Toyo and some chinese junk that went on for the last MOT. Quite why the last owner did this is beyond me when he didn't have a problem with paying for a £500 service and cam belt. To then put a £30 budget chinese "Linglong" thing on the car makes no sense to me. But there you go. So I spoke to the local tyre guys, and the people I use all the time and they have suggested I fit a set of Nexen tyres, all the same tread, the same weight rating, the right speed rating same date of build, and only £250 a set. They are M&S, "B" rated for wet weather, and even if they only last 12,000 miles, they will be adequate for what I want. I do like having the same tyres on all the four rims, please don't ask me the model of tyre, I cannot remember it. CP something... I'll only use the "M&S" bit if I fall asleep at the wheel if I'm honest, I wanted the Lexus because I had a cancer op last year and I'm finding it hard to get out of my Jaguar XJ6 after a long day at the wheel... So I bought a cheapish Lexus to see if I can be comfy and more importantly rather than having to climb out of the car after a long day driving, I can open the door and fall out if I need to. 😉 I too have "raced", bikes more than cars, and whilst only a year or so ago I wouldn't have touched anything tyre wise made in Asia, these Nexen things will be fine until I get another set of rims and fit them with proper winter rubber. Just in case we ever get a winter in the UK again. £250 a set. I pay more than that for my VFR 800 tyres... And I only get 8,000 miles out of them.

  46. Never do pads or discs at a dealer, its an absolute rip-off. I usually get Brembo pads from Eurocarparts for around £40 and my local garage fits them for £20! Except maybe the brake pipes, everything else should be pretty simple for a local garage to do, you would just need to source the parts.
    1 point
  47. Darren, those prices are eye watering and you're right to investigate alternate options. None of the items require specialist skills that need a premium rate. The brake lines is probably the worst job but only because of the time involved making up the replacement lines. Do you have any reputable JAP specialists nearby?
    1 point
  48. Why are you so surprised? ALL main dealers are complete rip-offs but as Lexus is a luxury brand you get luxuriously ripped off in style. I'm only surprised at one thing - why did you even ask in the first place? Either DIY or take to a local trusted indy place.
    1 point
  49. Uau! Are you sure you drive a car? Based on these unbelievable prices you have a plane! Did you ask them to justify these prices? I would woke away anyway! I had similar story with BMW garage a few years back, to repair all that they found would cost me (with them) almost £2300! (that was about 60% of the car price!!!) for mostly suspension repair, to be honest I didn't even know it needs repair, all worked well and was quite, they found issues somehow with it! Anyway, took their quote to a BMW specialist garage in Glasgow and they wanted £1700. I went further and took this quote to a garage next door from my work and got all done for £800 including parts and labour! SO it does happen with all of them, I guess this is how they survive in these competitive times!
