  2. So... My RX 300 has hit the 120,000 mile mark so I bought another set of plugs for it, the right ones, NGK Double Iridium or whatever, and set to seeing what I needed to do to get to the rear bank. Now I'm one of those who always does the hard bit first so I had a quick look on line, and in the Haynes Manual, looked at the car and decided whatever Lexus RX they used it looks nothing like mine does under the lid... So I decided at least the inlet manifold needs to come off to gain access and started along that track. I have the "fun" of wearing a Moon boot on my left leg since I was T boned off my bike, so not quite as agile as I'd like, but the more I looked, the more I decided to remove just to gain access to the rear of the inlet manifold and throttle body. There's a rail in the V once the top cover is off, two M6 nots one at each end then take all the vacuum pipes off, one goes to the back of the inlet manifold and I presume works an airflow flap? One goes to the air box, another one feeds to the top of the inlet throtttle bodies, then the electrical plugs and then fold kit out of the way. Then the fun begins. After trying for about 10 minutes to get my hand down the rear of the throttle body and the top inlet manifold I decided to do it the slower but easier way. Air filter out the way, air box off for a clean out. Top scuttle panel off, wiper motor and linkage out, scuttle tray out after feeding the cables out (what does the connector that goes to the wind screen do?) strut cross brace off, undo the brake master cylinder, put to one side for cleaning and at last "t'dog could see t'rabbit" and the two M8 nuts that go through metal supports that take vertical forces from the weight of the manifolds. A few more "earth points" on M6 studs, take the Cruise control cable off the linkage and the throttle body comes off it's studs and out the way, then the top part of the inlet manifold, stuff a rag over the inlet tract holes to prevent dropping the odd lump of coal down there and Bob's your aunties husband. Two of the plugs were quite loose, one was tighter than a ducks water seal at the stern. The rest is, as they say a reversal of the procedure. Then change the front bank of plugs. Then clear the fault code because you tried to start it without the Airflow sensor connected... The old ones looked worn, and I assume the rear ones at least have been in since yr 2000. Because everything was positioned "just so" and had a memory as to where it went. And everything was pretty "click" tight as well. And it does run a bot smoother, has to be said. But it wasn't partucularly a rough sounding engine anyway. Kinda glad it's a 120,000 mile cycle though. Bit of a pain to do.

  3. Unfortunatey batteries are only good for three years these days The average for most car batteries is 36 months and can be a lot less if used on a vehicle doing constant stop and start ,ie delivery vehicles. My first Lexus a 1990 400 the original factory fit was on the car for ten years and one cell failed at the tenth year but even then with a trickle charge it would run the car. The price of a replacement at that time from Lexus was £200 and this is why they now only last a third of the time of the original they are a third of the price so It is cost effective to replace them when they start to fail.

  4. Morning everyone when I collected my Rx I stopped at the first garage to fill up , I put in esso premium petrol as this was only pump free. Now what's the thoughts on regular vs premium petrol or do people pop in a fuel system cleaner every now and then . On my avensis 2.2diesel I only ever used shell premium and never had any issues with egr valve or dpf right up to 90k miles with the correct driving etc .but now with the hybrid which switches on and off you can't really say cruise at the correct rpm as it's all out of your hands if I'm explaining this correctly .hence my thoughts about using quality fuel and cleaners ,also good oil and maybe earlier oil change between services .which I can do easily . I do like to look after my cars regarding engine etc rather than oooo it's been cleaned and shiny and just leaving everything else up to lexus who couldn't really give a monkeys about your car and just change the oil and filter once a year .and stamp your book .

  5. Hi All, Owned my UX250h now for 3 months and cannot get the voice control to work properly. It does not recognise either music from a USB or towns and street names. Had it in to garage twice. They admit there is a problem but they say it checks out ok. Has anybody else had this problem or is there a solution.

  6. Hey Guys, I picked up an RC300h Takumi edition on Friday, loving the car so far and getting about 42mpg.I love the red paint in the sunlight! I made a first impressions video on it if anyone wants to check it out? Thomas 🙂 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HXV7cLsSQJM&t=3s

  7. Such a difficult one this. I seem to remember on my LS400 the remote locking could be disabled by pressing a button somewhere below the steering wheel, but I'm not sure if the 430 has that. So how long has it been like this?

  8. Ok,thanks for that. Determined to keep looking.

  11. Quite possibly radio interference - move the car a few feet or even a house or two away and see if it works then.

  12. Hmm, when you had the sat nav issue did you get around to disconnecting the battery? If not it may just be worth trying it for this problem, leaving it for 20 mins or so. Is it a recent problem?

  16. Maybe try reinserting the nav disc, you have to remove the two bolts to lift the front up.

  17. They're ok - I'm just used to a bezel-style adjuster placed on the driver's door (near electric window switches), which almost every other car I've had uses. I've booked the car in with my local dealer, to look at the low-speed creak / crack under braking. It also happens when not breaking but steering, so I suspect it's not a "feature" of the recharging or braking system.

  18. As I said in my earlier post that is almost certainly caused by the rear calliper slide pins being seized. They can be removed, clean and greased rather than buying complete new caliper assemblies. A set of good quality rear discs and pads (Ferodo) can be bought off Ebay for around £90

  19. It might be something simple - try replacing the cooling system pressure cap with a new one. But if that doesn't work: If there are no external signs of leaks from the engine (eg pink deposits) I'm afraid that the head gasket is the likely suspect. You won't necessarily notice anything yet - the leak could be quite slight between a water channel and a combustion chamber - that can even help combustion. But that's all temporary - sooner or later it will (probably) blow big time. You could get a cooling system pressure test done - even that may not show anything.

  21. I find in my LS batteries last just about 5 years, and just had a new one fitted this morning. £97 fitted for Exide EB705. You can get them for around £70 looking on Internet. I just needed new one as I had cell that collapsed twice last week, and just managed to charge battery over weekend to get me to my local battery shop. Got a 3 year guarantee. I think as RAC member I could have one fitted for about £130 (with 5 year guarantee). The one thing I have learnt - having had 11 years of LS ownership is that when the alarm starts going off for no reason, it is inidcating that the battery seems to be dipping it's voltage for a short period of time and that in about 9 to 12 months the battery will throw a wobbler with a dropped cell. So in 4 years when that starts happening I shall know a new batter has to be on my shopping list. I have never had a problem with battery discharge for when I have left my car at airport for a couple of weeks, and with my Mk3, recall I could leave it for months at a time with no problems. I also recall that when I had first new battery in my Mk4, the chap reckoned my 11 year old original Toyota Battery was old school battery engineering. In the past most batteries I have had never got much beyond 5 years, but more usual 3 to 4 years.

  23. Lovely car. I’ll be picking up my own F-Sport in early September after a wait of only six weeks as the result of my dealer’s interception of a cancelled order about to be shipped from Japan. It is the same Sonic Titanium as my present one, which is fine since the combination with red leather objectively remains my favourite. Regrettably, but not so much as to have been a dealbreaker or cause me an excess of suffering, it doesn’t have ML audio or the heated steering-wheel and card-key included in the Takumi pack in the UK and some other countries.

  25. I have a Lexus sat nav disc of Europe from my GS but it didn't recognise it, It's just so much easier to use either my TomTom or my phone. In fact using the TomTom on our last three drives in Europe was both brilliant and invaluable, I'm not sure I would have said the same for an outdated Lexus system!

  27. I don't know by how much (or if at all) our cars are affected being hybrids but which fuel is used makes some difference in terms of calorific value and to a less quantifiable extent on the cleanliness of a petrol engine. High compression high performance car engines particularly benefit from High Octane fuel provided by the 'Super' grades to combat knock and develop maximum power. This may make a slight difference with our cars from this aspect. However, the different additives in the 'Super' grade are reputed to keep the engine cleaner and running at full potential. so may benefit our cars. I remember, somewhat vaguely now, as it was quite some time ago, that this subject was raised in some depth on a BMW forum and the majority of members who posted thought it was a good idea to fill up with an occasional tankful of Shell V Super being the preferred choice, which is what I do. A minority used only the higher octane as a norm and the majority used only a standard Premium rather than Super grade from petrol chains or supermarkets. We lost lead in petrol causing manufacturers to make material changes particularly in valve seats and now we have Ethanol which is expected to increase still further as a percentage in the fuel. Whilst it is seen as making petrol a little 'greener', it gives slightly worse MPG and has some other disadvantages, particularly for some classic cars. It also takes a lot of land to grow the plant. Somebody, I knew had his own garage business and tested a well publicised additive at the time that you put in the tank to supposedly give more MPG among other things. He could not substantiate the claims from his tests. (This was not the additive formulated to protect affected engines from omission of lead). I would be very careful when considering what you add to fuel bearing in mind additives refiners have already incorporated in fuels

  28. I have been using Momentum 99 for some time now, but only on every third refill. It sometimes gives off a very strong odour. The Momentum is the same price as BP regular fuel in my area. Redex is only added when on special offer. Car passed MOT last month with no issues concerning emissions. Tester told me he had to carry out emission test again, as results were lower than expected for a 14 year old car.. Renewed my car insurance in June, and received all the usual quotes from price comparison sites as expected. Tried Direct Line and was offered same Policy for £25/year cheaper than any other quotes. Renewed Policy with them and had great customer service. Last week, decided to add one of my sons to Policy and requested a quote and expected my Policy to rocket in price. They quoted an additional payment of £8.98. I had to query this quotation in case it should have been £89.80. £8.98 was the extra payment required. Happy days all round.

  29. Had issues with supermarket standard fuel from sainsburys a while back, stopped using it and then I got 6p off a litre this year voucher. Thought why not. Used it in my car and lawnmower. Lawnmower hated it, car wasn't the same. Had a word with the lawnmower service guy and he said not to use it unless going through a tank fairly quickly. There are barely any fuel stabilisers in supermarket fuel which is why it tends to go "off" within 2 weeks. Never had an issue with branded fuel like BP, Shell, Esso in the tank even after 4-5 weeks Son's Merc doesn't like supermarket petrol, runs rough with a higher idle and very prominent lag over 3k rpm. Most people won't notice this as they hardly go over 3k rpm anyway. Petrol engines also seem to be more resistant to crap fuel.

  30. Use a mixture of supermarket and branded fuel. Occasionally stick some Redex ii. I always used to use branded fuel, but the RX450h has so much power I haven't bothered. Mind my cars usually running hot as a minimum journey is around 25 miles and several times a week 160+ a day with lots of A roads and motorway. I never had dpf or egr problems with any of my diesels because of the mileage they were doing,

  31. I don't mind which petrol I put in the car. Generally it's a mixture of regular supermarket petrol, with the premium stuff once a month or so. I did use a fuel cleaner once, it cleaned the system so well my mpg went from 32 to 22. It had cleaned the fuel consumption sensor so I was getting a true reading. ☹️

  32. I'm not sure anything has changed. As far as I know, all series 3 RXs have the same engine, from 2009 to the introduction of series 4 in 2015. I think they've made a mistake in giving Ian a quote of £395 - but I may well be wrong.
