  1. My MOT guy says the same. If it's not fitted, it's not a fail because a tester cannot check if it's secure if it's not there. There are no components attached to it, it's simply a cover. And he's been doing MOT's since I was in my teens, so if he doesn't know...

  2. I can't believe its been nearly 5 months since I last updated..... So, firstly this happened in April its been service work over the last few months that's been carried out, as ever the IS does its thing well, customers comment on how smooth it is and how smart the interior looks. I still chuckle when I get MPG figures like this on a run to London from Plymouth....... Currently its now sat at 118,500. The only niggle have ever had with the IS has been the lack of spare wheel. This was reinforced when I caught a kerb a few weeks ago and gashed the sidewall of the tyre, the Lexus repair kit would have been useless there and I had to limp the car about 3/4 of a mile up the road to a tyre centre. I know that there are space constraints and that's one of the reasons for not having a spare, but its still something that haunts me and is one of the downsides to Lexus ownership. About 3 months ago I needed new pads fitting to the car, being low on available time to get them done I asked a local garage to do them for me as I didn't have time to get in the garage and do it myself, how I regret this..... Over the last few weeks I have noticed a brake wobble that's been getting progressively worse as time has gone on, the discs were only fitted last July so I was a little surprised to find the discs were warped. Whilst I do a lot of mileage I don't make a habit of hammering the brakes and the last time I warped a set of discs was about 30 years ago on a old ford whose discs were as thin as wafers. This week I bit the bullet and decided to fit new discs and pads, however I didnt use genuine parts. Some would say a little over the top, however I have used EBC items on other cars and find they give off little brake dust and the discs have an excellent wear rate, and they look nicer than standard discs as well 😉 This should be an easy job was my first thought, an hour or 2 and we should be back on the road with new brake bling installed. oh how wrong was I 😞 When the car went in last time I was clear to the garage, check the sliders and if there are any issues let me know and get them sorted. The sliders were seized solid, as a result the pads are binding on the disc and the thinking is this is what's been partially responsible for the warping of the discs. the other contributing factor would have been some idiot who decided to visit lane 3 of the M4 whilst I was doing 80mph, however he wasn't 😳 so they went from being warm to very hot quite quickly, and the air went very blue in the car as well. But that wasn't the worse of the shoddiness.... These are the bolts that hold the calliper carrier to the hub, I remember some comment when I picked the car up about having to remove the carriers, im guessing to un-seize the sliders, both of them have damaged thread and as a result There is next to bugger all thread left on the carrier and the bolt no longer does up tightly, it just spins and spins 🤬 and this is why I don't trust garages, its a total bodge, and im guessing they knew something was amiss because one of the bolts was full of thread lock. this was Monday, a few phone calls to Lexus and a parts supplier have got me the new carrier bolts, a new carrier as well as a slider kit for the other carrier. At the same time I bought 4ltrs of WS fluid and all the washers needed for the sump plug and refill plug, that's a job for when I get back off holiday. Next jobs (end of August) will be the gearbox fluid change, diff fluid change, anti freeze and inverter fluid change and a 120,000 mile service which will include the plugs as well so far I have done about 60,000 miles in 18 months and have averaged 49mpg in real terms. Servicing is still the biggest cost and this issue with the calliper carrier has been the only non-scheduled day off work due to item failure (faulty workmanship). Ive used Continental tyres and have been getting about 27,000 miles out of them, which at £75 isn't bad value in my eyes. The cabin is still nice and rattle free, I feel the set cushion on my seat is losing its firmness, im only 14 stone so am a bit surprised by that, when I hoover the car ive noticed bits of foam under the drivers seat Currently i'm still having a battle with Lexus to sort out the rust on the chassis leg of the car, I posted about it here Lexus GB are now having another look at this since it was picked up as an advisory on my MOT, needless to say I was not impressed when Lexus first refused to deal with it however they had a change of heart when I went back to them with the MOT information. I can't complain about the car, according to auto trader its still worth about 10K, and that would be achievable if the bumper and bonnet and repainted and the stonechips dealt with.

  5. I owned my 2002 IS200 for 13 years which I absolutely loved. It literally never went wrong and I'd kept it in fantastic condition, with just a few subtle mods keeping a clean OEM look: Front splitter TTE rear skirt 2004 facelift headlights and foglights Rear spoiler Genuine mesh grill Aluminium kick plates and pedals Custom heater dials Altezza chrome shift gaiter Pioneer Apple Carplay double-din with reversing cam Last year a family members IS300h was offered to me so I decided maybe it was time for a change... although it was really difficult to let this one go 😞 I actually wanted an F-Sport... however as this is a high spec Premier and I knew the history of the car, it made sense to purchase. Compared to the my IS200, this car is incredible in terms of being more powerful and about three times cheaper to run. It lacks the smoothness of the straight six but I love the torque in Sport mode. I couldn't believe it came with plastic kick plates so I installed the illuminated versions and also aluminium pedals including footrest: I noticed that the quality of some trim panels is really poor, no way near as well put together as the IS200. The passenger electric seat motor was noisy and there was also a screen flicker. I think a couple of the speakers may not be working correctly, anybody else have issues with the ML system? Whilst the build quality is clearly not the same, the service from Lexus Woodford was exceptional. They replaced the seat motor and screen under warranty, checked a few other items too and at the same time made sure I was never inconvenienced. Finally I added a subtle rear spoiler and thought that would be all I wanted to do with this car. I then saw some bumper conversion threads on other forums and realised how much better the F-Sport front looked. I looked at various conversion kits however the options available in the UK are limited and shipping costs are high. Then one day this used F-Sport bumper came up for sale on eBay, in silver with minimal damage... along with a complete F-Sport grill from another supplier. Being close to Christmas, I waited for eBay's next site wide discount promotion and purchased both along with a set of WinJet fog lights. These were plug and play and I couldn't justify purchasing the original F-Sport LED fogs. Foglights and grill both arrived damaged ☹ fortunately they were still usable and I negotiated some further discount to keep them. Whilst this probably would have been enough to swap over, looking into parts diagrams I realised that all of the air ducts are different between base and F-Sport models. I made the decision to just replace all, thinking it would make fitment easier for my bodyshop. Duct, Air Intake, Lh, Toyota 52822-53030 Duct, Air Intake, Rh, Toyota 52821-53030 Duct, Cool Air Intake, No.1, Toyota 52811-53010 Duct, Cool Air Intake, No.2, Toyota 52812-53010 Duct, Cool Air Intake, Toyota 53209-53080 Duct, Cool Air Intake, Toyota 53208-53050 It took me a while to source all the parts I wanted, with a combination of used parts from breakers and other online parts suppliers. Below is an example of the difference between the ducts that sit behind the bumper... F-sport first then the Base version: With all the parts collected I finally handed the car over to the bodyshop... with clear instructions to carefully keep everything they remove from the car. As the old bumper, grill, fogs and air ducts were all in perfect condition, I was fortunate to sell everything for a decent price. Recouping most of the parts cost meant this conversion ended up costing just under £300 including paint and fit. I was absolutely ecstatic with the finally outcome, the bodyshop did a great job. Bumper needed minimal prep, silver was a good base coat for the grey and there were no issues with fitment. Recently took the car on a road trip to the Lake District... which was also a great experience. It handles really well on twisty roads and eats up miles with ease: Next up is to do something with the wheels... a refurb or a new set.

  6. It’s a long time coming, but I promised a number of members that I would summarise life after Lexus. I don’t pretend to be a capable driver, a track god or even someone of any real automotive knowledge. There are plenty on here that put me to shame! I have however owned an IS-F, RC-F and now a C63. I’ve spent a fair amount of time in GS-Fs. I’ve also had time in both versions of the LC-500. Mercedes wise, I’ve driven a fair few miles in a C63s, an AMG GT and a current E63s. So, I think I’m in a good place to render an honest comparison between Lexus and Mercedes. What follows is my experience as a Lexus / AMG owner. Just one person’s view - just my view. IS-F – wonderfully stealthy I loved my IS-F. My heart still skips a beat whenever I see one on the road. Maybe this happens because they are so rare or just because I will always feel an attachment to the Lexus brand. The engineering, the build quality and the customer service are all qualities that impress and leave a lasting mark. Of course, you know there’s a BUT coming. The BUT came in the form of the anonymity of the IS-F. The very thing that appeals to so many – the wolf in sheep’s clothing. Call me vain, call me a show off, but I started to get a little annoyed at the lack of recognition the IS-F got in the real world. Only dedicated petrol heads knew what it was, and I got a little tired of having conversations such as “Yes, I have a Lexus IS-F. It’s the equivalent to a BMW M3, Mercedes C63.”. I wanted the car to be recognised for just how good it was. An even bigger problem was the temptation to show M3 and C63 drivers just how good my IS-F was. Obviously I resisted…. The seed was sewn, and my head was turned by an RC-F. IS-F to RC-F I found my RC-F on Autotrader. A 15 plate Carbon edition in white. The day of trade in, the IS-F performed beautifully – flawlessly, and it really was hard handing over the keys. I felt like I was betraying a friend, but it had to be done. I always find the process of purchasing a new car stressful - the paperwork, the money exchange and that nagging thought in the back of the head “Have I done the right thing?”. One the part-x was done, I headed South from Stoke, down the busy M6. I had a headache, the sun was very bright and I had no sunglasses. Not a great start. That nagging thought in the back of my head was really evident. My first couple of hours in the RC-F weren’t great. I started thinking that I’d spent £40k on a car that was arguably no better than the IS-F. More striking, definitely, but still arguably no better. I’d stopped at the services (somewhere on the M6) in the hope I could buy some sunglasses. On my return to the car park, a guy (who turned out to be a Boxster owner) was walking around the RC-F. He was very complimentary about the car. This attention was to be repeated over and over in the 10,000 miles of RC-F ownership. People stop, stare, photograph, video and adore the look of the car. By the time I got off the motorway and on to some fast A and B roads, I started to bond with the RC-F. Over the next year, my RC-F proved to be utterly reliable and adequately fast! Goodbye to the Lexus F fold Two things annoyed me about the RC-F (and IS-F) 1. The RC-F’s sheer confidence. I found that to get enjoyment out of the car, I had to wring its neck. If you’ve driven the Mountain Road on the IOM, you’ll know it’s derestricted. To enjoy it and any other road in the RC-F, I found I really had to obtain speeds that were way too high. 2. Noise. The intake noise inside the cabin sounded amazing. Outside it sounded pretty good on the boil. However, when pottering around, things were a little sterile. The exhaust note was disappointing. A QS exhaust helped, but that came with downsides. So, those were my two reasons for leaving the F fold. Where next? The next car would have to entertain at lower speeds and make a great noise. The options – the M3, but they sound ******* (and fake). Alfa thing – reliability. F-Type – I’m too tall. LC-500, has all the issues that the RC-F does. That left me with the C63, and I ended up buying a C63 Coupe. Day one with the C63 Don’t listen to what people tell you about Mercedes reliability and build quality. Do what I did – just go buy one and experience it in the flesh. Mine got me home from the dealer only to be recovered straight back there. What a nightmare – but I did get several weeks in an E63s loaner. A quick note to all F drivers – no matter what car you have, don’t battle it out with an E63s – they are in a different league – biblical performance! My C63 got returned to me after a couple of weeks but immediately some trim fell off it. This time I got a £125,000 AMG GT loaner. Another rapid car – not as fast as the E63s, but still in a different league to F cars. C63 v RC-F There’s no winner. It’s a personal preference, but I’ll list the pros – cons Lexus wins on 1. Build quality – HANDS down – different league 2. Reliability….. .most of the time. My IS-F did need a new steering rack - £5k) 3. Warranty – cheap and usually comprehensive 4. Induction noise. Epic. The C63 engine itself (minus exhaust) is quite boring. 5. Rareness 6. Handling – always predictable. I’d still be more confident in an RC-F (especially in the wet). Haven driven TVD and Flintstone LSD versions, I wouldn’t bother with the TVD (contrary to many previous debates). Personally, I found the TVD a little counter intuitive at the limit. 7. Standard kit (at least in Carbon edition). Things like radar cruise as standard 8. Nobody will nick a Lexus C63 wins on 1. Overall looks. Yes, the RC-F is eye catching and from the rear 3/4 a real stunner. But I just find the nose on the RC-F (and IS-F) awkward in profile. The C63 has less awkward angles. Incidentally the GS-F has the best F nose. 2. Noise. AMG have performed miracles with the exhaust system. It’s an epic, guttural noise. The popping and banging is also awesome. What’s more – if you don’t like it, turn it off. I've yet to encounter the perfect aftermarket F exhaust. 3. Fun at low speed. You don’t have to go fast to have fun. This is partly down to the epic sound track and……. 4. Torque. With 8 gears, the F cars can often leave you in no man’s land. In the AMG you have this stuff called torque – low down the rev range. 5. Recognition. People know what AMGs are and even if they don’t they appreciate the noise 6. Road placement. The 63 'feels' more compact than the RC-F. The RC-F has that big swooping bonnet. On the road, the RC-F actually feels bigger than its sister the GS-F! Do I miss the RC-F No. Will I ever own a Lexus again….. I hope so. The AMG’s current garage buddy is a Lexus GS-F. I walk past it every day. I still admire everything about it. Lexus F cars – I’ll always have a soft spot for them. Thanks for reading.

  10. I know this has been discussed before, but having requested advice on various issues, I thought I'd put a recommendation on that someone may find useful. Having had two genuine Toyota batteries fail after around 3 years, my current one just out of warranty, I thought it was time to shop around. It's been said on this forum that only a Toyota battery will fit properly, this is not true. After some research, looking at spec, branding, warranties and price, I decided I wanted a Bosch battery , the S4 series with a 4 year warranty. I just fitted a Bosch S4 026 battery and it is a perfect fit. The spec matches my Toyota battery exactly, with 630A and 70 Ah. So I have a new battery, same spec with 4 year guarantee instead of 3, and it was cheaper. For those with a Costco card, they sell them at the lowest price (it may be a special order and take a couple of days, although I was lucky, they had one in stock), without the potential faff and expense of buying online and potentially having to return a heavy battery by post if a fault develops. If you get one, the correct battery is the S4 026, not the S4 027, which is identical except the terminals are the wrong way around, don't ask me how I know. Hopefully, someone may find this useful. For those of you with a cynical bent, I have no connection with either Bosch or Costco, it's just a recommendation

  13. All done and dusted. Old pads had about 3mm left on them. Just above the wear indicator. Were a cinch to change, thoroughly cleaned callipers while the wheels were off. First impressions are good, initial bite seems to be better than the OEM pads. It remains to be seen if this continues.....

  17. Remember it's not a hybrid, and it's in as good a state of tune as any other one could be (because I've done it all myself) so as I usually average 30 ish with my 3.0 Jaguar's, I didn't think 27mpg was bad for a car that has the aerodynamic qualities of a cinder block. Rarely goes over the speed limit if at all because it's not the kind of vehicle that encourages that style of driving, it's on tyres that have exceptional wet weather performance so they won't be particularly good road friction wise and all in all I'm happy with what it's giving me per petrol station visit.

  20. I find voice control pretty useless in my current NX. Having said this it is fractionally better than it was in my previous RX400h and RX450h. It is not so bad when at a stand still - for instance while waiting at lights or in traffic - but as soon as there is any background noise, it just gives up. In truth, when I have got it to work, there are so many menus and confirmation prompts to go through that iI have found it easier and quicker to enter an address through the track pad. My Google phone: - NAVIGATE to <address>. - Done. My NX goes something like that: - Enter an address - hmmm... I'm not in a good mood today, so I'll dial a number instead. How about that. - GO BACK. ENTER AN ADDRESS - hmmm... go on then... for a laugh. Actually, I don't recognise Poplar Way in Winchester. Do you fancy going to Standard Way in Glasgow instead - GO BACK. ENTER AN ADDRESS - Awright then. I'll give you a choice: 1st/where you want to go, 2nd/where you could go instead, 3rd/ Where *I* want to go. Which one is it going to be. I dare you. - FIRST - Are you sure? - CONFIRM - Gawd you're not fun. Are you REALLY sure? - YES - OK then. Dialing 0800123346 It's just like having my mother-in-law in the car.

  21. You’ve summed it up well, mine is a love/hate relationship. The boot is about 6 inches too narrow is my only other niggle with the car, aside from that I love it, it’s individual, good looking, total reliability and very economical. And for all of that I speak really highly of the the Lexus product. The dealers however [emoji17] no!! I had forgotten about the Services belt, I need to check that, thanks for the reminder [emoji106] Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  22. I know what you mean - I replaced the cabin air filter myself recently and found that the Lexus mechanic who last replaced it put it in upside down. There is even an arrow on the filter stating which way up. Really! I think you have a love-hate relationship with your overall Lexus ownership experience but that it appears to suit your needs 100% Can't wait to hear how you get on with your next scheduled jobs - particularly your gearbox oil and inverter fluid change. Any plans to replace your services belt?

  26. Oh wow that looks really cool! where did you get these from? Easy to install? Thanks, yeah that's not a bad idea. The original powder coat finish is quite costly compared to a paint finish. I know right, they should have just fitted those kick plates from factory like the previous MK2 SE-L. Anymore info on your android screen? I'd love to do something similar, the standard Nav/media system is pretty poor compared to other brands. The speakers and sub will definitely sound good! Cheers, here's the link to the spoiler... although I think you can now get it cheaper from other sellers: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Painted-For-Lexus-IS250-IS350-IS-F-Window-Rear-Trunk-Lip-Spoiler-202-BLACK/183543252350?fits=Model%3AIS350&epid=914904124&hash=item2abc07c57e:g:~wYAAOSweuxWRZCC

This is the usual price I would think, I have mine done at Protyre / Treadmark after a heavy wack down a pothole whatever Get the colourful pre-check done showing the mis-alignments and decide if you want both the front and back done, you don't often need to have both ( the rears ) , it's £30 for each end ( incl vat ) your bill will come down from £144 ....... to a more sensible £30 / £60 Malc

  29. LC500 V8.......probably difficult to compare against an IS-F, easier to compare with the RC-F. LC-500 is a lovely car. Feels very special. I'll underline those points. However, for the money, the performance is no better and the drive is very similar. So, I'd argue it's not worth the money. Having said that, some would say that the RC-F (or GS-F) isn't worth the money over the IS-F. LC-500 does however sound better than any (stock) F car. Very much looking forward to the LC-F (if it exists). Would love to see it having more low down torque.

  35. Hi all, probably a long shot, but I need to let go of my '67 reg sonic red LC500 Sport+ (6,500 miles, tan interior) as I need space for 5 people and am in need of an interesting saloon. My wife is not allowing any of the usual German options (M5, E63S, C63 etc) so I thought I might side step. Even if not selling immediately, I'd be interested to hear. Especially if you'd like to swap with an LC500 as I'm guessing it will take me a while to sell the LC.

  39. Great write up. Congratulations on the C63s AMG. Thanks for the comparison. At least you got loaned exceptional machines when the C63s was in the garage 😁. I agree on most of your points. It is funny that the F performance line of the Lexus brand don't get recognized by the masses. In fact, I've even experienced this myself at a dealer when i asked to get brand new floor mats for my GS-F, he got me a GS floor mat (the very same ones i have on my car) even after i specifically told him i wanted to make sure the car had the proper GS-F mats. His explanation was that those were the only floor mats made for the GS 🤦‍♂️ I have since given up and decided to rather spend the money elsewhere 😂. Which is why i have invested in a valved exhaust system to open up the glorious NA V8 sound at low revs and have the ability to turn it off with a remote when the situation needs me to be more "discrete". The F has plenty of torque, it's just that it's higher up the rev range. To have fun in an F in low speed you only need to drive it in manual (and you'll probably only need 1st/2nd gear or maybe occasionally 3rd) and keep it at higher RPM. Can't deny the wonders of turbo charged engines though, must be hilarious having access to torque so easily 😁 Enjoy your AMG ownership, hope the C63s has had enough of garage visits (except of course for the usual service) and even if it does then hopefully the loaners will continue to be epic cars at least 👍 😃

  41. I am 6 foot tall and have driven a number of CT200's over the last 3 years. I had a 2018 model for a couple of weeks, drove 2000 miles and had no issues. Think that dropping the drivers seat right down should help you. Try different models if that doesn't work as the seat adjustments vary between models. The last one I drove was a fairly base model and that had the most comfortable seats I recollect.

  45. Glad to hear it's all been sorted out. I hope Halfords paid the full cost. But if untrained store staff use the recommendation on the Halfords website, they'll still end up selling and perhaps topping up air con gas with the wrong and dangerous product. I've tried putting the model details of a couple of Lexus hybrid cars into the recommendation page and it still comes back with the wrong product. Although the detailed information pages and the products themselves are marked that this product must not be used on hybrid cars, some people may not read that far. They've already had the recommendation from Halfords. Why read further? The staff member you dealt with didn't read what it said on the canister. In fact, they may not have even known what a hybrid car is.

  46. Long time since an update but rest assured the car is still alive and Well!! Not a great deal has happened over the past few months, however I have ordered some parts which arrived and some are still on the way. I gained some led rear lights from Japan and a fellow LS400 owner sold me his old wheels. The spacers that came with it were too big originally however I have now got better sized spacers and got the ride height to just about where I'd like it, enjoy the pics :) Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk

  47. While doing another job on car I checked with the MoT tester again. The central part of the backing plate does support the parking brake cable and the internal shoes. BUT he said if the rest of a rusty plate is cut away and removed, leaving the mounting intact, that is NOT an MoT failure. He confirmed that the MoT manual does refer to the securing devices, not the plate itself. Again, your choice as to replacing them. David

  48. Just to be more specific IS250 is 8.4s official to 0-62, not 0-60. So to begin with 0-60 figure is 8.1s, not 8.4s. Now, it is known fact that Lexus always understates the acceleration and they have done so for every single car so far except maybe LFA. I believe that is because they are not "boy racer company" where it matters e.g. Ford always understated Mustang acceleration from very first model in 1964. But there is more to it... In US MPG and pollution tests includes "real life like" test which includes "rapid acceleration" - this means that MPG and pollution figures would be higher if you would push the car to the limits and Lexus cares mores to keep these down. That is quite logical - typical Lexus buyer would care more about MPG and pollution rather than 0.5s acceleration. Now theoretical stuff ends here.... In UK reviews are pretty rubbish and there are certain amount of political correctness e.g. you would rarely see acceleration figures being measured for the car, because such thing would be considered as" bad behaviour"... almost "dangerous driving"... "racing"... simply bad taste for car journalist in UK... All very stupid... "can you just bloody tell me how long the car takes 0-60 in practice!?".... no... they just come up with some vague description e.g. they claim RC300h is "not as fast as rivals", but "acceleration does not matter". Anyway the point is - because of car culture "limitations" in UK we don't know what the real 0-62 times is. However, we can easily find that out from reviews over the pond where getting car 0-60-0 is standard test and nobody gets offended by it. There we can find out that 0-60 time is 7.4s, which translate into 7.64s for 0-62mph/100kmh... I have personally tested that on OBD2+GPS and I consistently get 7.6s for metric and 7.4s for imperial acceleration. I definitely doesn't do anything under 7s (unless modified)... but neither it is 8.4s. I would summarise that IS250 is not fast car (but it never intended to be), but it had reasonable acceleration for it's age, weight and power/weight. It is definitely no underpowered, but it is slightly overweight (again something which was intentional). Again looking historically... I could match hot-hatches of the day as illustrated by @peachy and I believe that is sufficient. "Slow"... is really relative. Yes it is slow compared with the cars which have 100hp more or the cars which weights 300kg less... otherwise it is pretty normal. What is slow is IS300h/RC300h - based on claimed power (227hp) they are slow, because IS250 is faster with less power (204hp) IS250 is slightly lighter, but not as much to have as much advantage. That for me indicates there is inherent inefficiency in the hybrid system so that it cannot "put-down" all the power. Same goes for IS200t/RC200t - cars with 241hp, but just slightly faster than IS250... something is not right. What is worse if you look to BMW430i (2.0t as well) it only has few more horse power and few less kilograms, but it is whole 2 seconds faster (5.6s). Why? Because BMW somehow managed to deliver that power to the road where Lexus failed with it's current gen cars. That is why I say "slow" is relative and you can only call something slow or fast based on some sort of comparison and relation to peers, as such IS250 is not "slow" for NA 2.5l v6.

  49. It's a well known fact that Lexus understate the performance figures.

  50. Totally disagree. The 250 is not slow. It has power. Ok I probably wouldn't want to race anybody in one but it can hardly be described as slow.
