  1. The time has come to let 'Larry' go...and im wondering how much he's worth/I should advertise him for. For those who don't know Larry, he's an LS400 1998 S reg with 122k miles. Full service history and the cambelt has been changed. The car is immaculate and drives superb. See pics. why am I selling? Now I'm travelling into central London I need something cheap and ulez compliant. I'm trying to find a cheap lock up to store it in but no luck so far. Any price indicator wouldn't help, thanks

  2. Several of our members have been following my post about changing from Air Suspension to Coilover Suspension. I have to say here and now, if you can afford it stay with Air Suspension ! Had I replaced the rear units I would be in a whole better place now, why ? Let me answer ! 1. Nothing is as smooth as Air Suspension. 2. Nothing is as quiet as Air Suspension. I feel now like I'm running on Town and Country tyres, for those who know, they're extremely noisy. Coilovers have spoilt the whole Lexus experience. We are taking a trip from the Midlands to the Isle of Wight soon, I'll let you know what the quality of ride is like on motorways. The way I feel at the moment, I'm going to be looking for another Lexus.

  3. Exactly the problem then. They are designed to improved handling, with the ability to lower the vehicle, meaning they are stiffer which will compromise ride quality and noise. Even 'comfort' coilovers are harder than Lexus stock suspension.

  5. Assuming a Toyota/Lexus hybrid system then 5+ years is fine. 10+ years is where I draw the line, only for the fact that I don't want the hassle of getting a battery pack repaired if a cell were to fail.

  6. I've found another Lexus hidden feature 😀 When I removed the rear seating recently I found that the rear seat belts have an extending arm, for want of a better description. The seat belt guide on the top of the seats extends , why ? I don't really know, unless it's a comfort thing. Tadah ! Just when I thought I knew the car inside out. 🤓

  7. Taken the ufo out for the firt time today. Its got some go in it. Its a bit like an ls400 on adrenalin. Got the best rear lights. And i love the little green ones on top off the wings

  10. Collected my ES with premium pack, and got 66.7mpg on the first mixed route of 102 miles; on par with me C350e and 520d before this car. 🤘

  12. I think it makes a bigger difference on a saloon but still isn't that much in it compared to good quality OEM sprung suspension. What coilovers did you use - it is those, rather than being non-air, that has compromised the ride and increased noise.

  13. i have a 17 plate F Sport and after power off the seat moves backwards to give you more room to get out , there is a setting for this where you can select off mid or full retract

  14. I'd have a peek underneath and check it for rust... I only looked at my 09 underneath when the cat went, and there is a bit of attention needed on the sill areas and rear rails... surface stuff mostly, but on an early car, it's worth a look. Was surprised at the amount of surface rust under the rx400 - or, perhaps was surprised that I wasn't surprised... same story as the RAV4s... and probably every other Toyota product.

  15. I have a 2015 Advance Plus and there is no reversing camera fitted. I think, unless specified as an extra when ordering, that cameras were only standard on the Sport and Premier models for this year. It's a handy thing to have though but, like 'mad jam', I still found myself looking over my shoulders and using the mirrors when reversing in cars that have had a camera fitted. They get dirty quite easily in the bad weather too so can't be relied upon 100%. I did read somewhere in posts on this forum that there are companies online that can retrofit reversing cameras to a CT (similar to the original) for about £750. At that price I think I can learn to live without one 😊

  16. all my used quotes were for the entire exhaust section (as specified by me)... mirroring your thoughts. they tend to be 500-800 used. Anyone quoting for just the cat section should probably be reported. We could possibly be looking at supplier-induced demand!

  17. only available on facelift models in the UK.

  18. Agree that price does look a bit steep, but if I was the seller.....well good luck and remember there are plenty of enthusiasts out there and whilst we compare against what we think, £15k is not a lot to some people who may well wish to keep it dry and heated. That then becomes a very different market.

  20. If you accept the idea of toll roads (why does taxation pay for 99.99% of roads but not others - most of which are tunnels and crossings which by their nature are difficult to avoid) then using technology to avoid the need for barriers is a good idea. It's partly why so many people forget to pay because the journey across is a pretty seamless experience. Once upon a time I used the Tyne Tunnel regularly and that wasn't a pleasant experience during rush hour. If I had just received the PCN I would have paid the fine - couldn't argue, I had forgotten to pay. It was the offer to accept late payment and then having a system that couldn't recognise and deal with the fact that I had already paid followed by a robotic response from the staff. This clearly wasn't the first time they'd had the same conversation but even then they can't deal with it outside of going to an 'appeals process'. I'm pretty sure that if it went to court then a Judge would take the view that I'd acted in good faith and that I'd did what most people would do in the circumstances. Having said that, I'm most likely going to pay the fine and then hope I win my appeal and get a refund - we shall see.

  21. Hi @STE041, heated steering wheel, with winter approaching I wish I had that option on my GS, I hate wearing gloves! :) I noticed your mpg dropped from 40ish to 32.2mpg, it will improve once the engine run-in but I thought it would still be better. What is the normal average on ES, 48-52mpg? Anyway, as I said in another thread very nice car! Enjoy and keep us updating!

  23. I think these pay within 24 hours things are just another way of wringing more £££ out of us. I'm not one of those that complains on behalf of the "poor" motorist but are you honestly telling me they didn't factor in all the people who forget to pay and get a PCN?

  24. Or somebody in IT got an internal award for producing a system that legally makes a better profit from late payment users!

  25. if logic prevails, which of course it probably doesn't, then when you get the County Court summons you could just explain the 8 weeks appeal process and the fee has already been paid, just not allocated correctly by DART .............. it's just that the DART technology isn't fit for purpose ....... and you being an " expert witness " in this matter wonder what the Judge ( is it ?) will say ? ........ Life no doubt, 12 years minimum ...... hard labour, building the new crossing at Hoo Malc ................ sorry i jest here when it could of course become NOT a laughing matter ......... apologies upfront

  28. As FA says above. Lexus make great cars but their Achilles Heel is the infotainment and navigation systems.

  29. 141 miles in, too early to say, but gets an awful lot of looks in traffic. Drives better than the IS300h did, spent 90 miles this morning figuring out the ML system, works a treat using Tidal on Hifi setting

  30. So it sounds like they have greased the backs of the pads, where they make contact with the piston and calliper, this normally cures the issue. The face that 50 miles later the noise it back makes me think that your calliper sliders are starting to seize, Toyota/Lexus are notorious for this, even low mileage vehicles. If the slider is seizing then the pad isn't moving away from the disc enough when the brake is released, a slider repair kit is about £15 per side (APEC kits) plus the cost of labour. From experience if your doing one side you may as well do both.

  31. just read the manual for the rx200/350. double clicking the remote blip engages the deadlocks. to kill the intrusion sensor there is a button on the central roof console, default is for the sensor to be on so you need to deactivate every time you leave the car. locking without alarm is to use the key not the fob. must lock all other doors first.

  32. I think the camera and/or sensors is a nice to have but by no means an essential need, personally. I have a camera (and sensors) on mine (2014MY Advance Sport, incidentally) but still find, through habit, I use mirrors and looking over my shoulder more than relying on the camera. Each to their own really.

  33. Thanks It's actually exactly what I expected. It's not as good as the GS for flying down a motorway - the GS rides smoother and quieter. The 3 is epic down Scottish A-roads, with amazing balance, poise and power, so easy to place and awesome grip. I love the minimalism in the interior, the infotainment system is easily the best I've used in any car (but not without its flaws). Our Scotland trip covered more than 1000 miles, and I had to pay a grand total of £6.00 for "fuel". It's better than the Leaf in every way (Shock! Surprise!). As a daily driver it just feels absurdly special (in fairness so does the GS, in a different way... We're not spoiled at all with cars!)

  34. Not a must, I went 2 years with an Advance with just sensors and got on fine. The camera is handy but not essential IMHO. I’m not sure I’d want to go without either of them however as the view out the back window isn’t very good low down, even if the side mirrors are a decent size. It sure if the camera as standard on the Advance Plus that year but someone else might come along with the answer on that.

  35. Apologies in advance for OT then.... We just got back from a 1000 mile road trip around Scotland, so a few opportunities for moody/atmospheric/scenic photos of it there: Not sure why the first few aren't showing up properly - the links work

  38. You have to be methodical and logical when doing any diagnostics work, let alone such a proliferation of problems, so lets start at the beginning. 1. What were you working on and/or trying to do when you damaged the loom? 2. Do you have a laptop, miniVCI cable and Techstream? 3. If the answer to No. 2 is no, do you at least have some form of OBD2 code reader? 4. Do you have electrical test gear such as a multimeter and clamp ammeter? If you don't have No.2 (preferably) or No.3, you just aren't going to get anywhere. If you don't have a multimeter at the very least, you just aren't going to get anywhere. Here's a couple of pages that give you an indication of what's involved in diagnosing an immobiliser fault:

  39. Herbie thank you for replying this is an ongoing problem i have It all started when I was working on my car and I accidentally damaged the main wiring loom going through the bulkhead next to the brake servo. This was repaired but it left me with a number of faults, these included air conditioning not working no display on LCD for a/c or mpg info but showing clock all warning light showing on dashboard but no gear position PRND no high beam light and no temperature gauge, all windows work with the switches on their respective doors but not from the drivers door the door locking button on the passenger door works but not on the drivers door cannot open tailgate from dash button or key fob but releasing it manually from inside boot it relocks itself electrically the airbag light on dashboard goes off when started but comes back on I asked several mechanics their opinions including my local Lexus dealer and not many had any idea apart from in maybe a fuse. I have checked all the fuses i can find and all ok i has been to a local electronic specialist but they could not find the fault talking to Lexus they said that they would just have to start at the beginning and work their way through which would take time and probably be expensive so I decided to buy a a/c module an the part under the lefthand side of the dashboard which includes several fuses and three bcm’s part number 02731-0w122 just to see if it made a difference changing the a/c module made no difference whatsoever changing the fuse/bcm module also didn’t work so I changed both these modules back to the original ones and at this time apart from the original faults the car worked overnight for some reason the battery went flat ,i charged it up but found that although the engine turned over it would not fire also I found that the key would not lock and unlock the doors so I assume that maybe it was something I did and I have caused the immobiliser to come on there maybe Another reason but I’m not sure what I have tried resetting the ecu from utube which involves shorting no4 and 13 on the diagnostic plug but no difference if you or any other Lexus club member have any ideas that I could try firstly to get the car running and maybe some pointers to fixing the rest of my problems it would be appreciated
    1 point
  40. Well, with the greatest of respect Keith, just stabbing in the dark and assuming things is not a good way of fixing problems. Which fuse or module was it that you changed and what circuit(s) does it protect? It may be the immobiliser but it may not. Do you have a spark at the plugs? Do you have fuel to the injectors? Is the gear selector in P or N as it should be to start the engine? Even if it is, it could be a fault with the starter inhibitor switch that prevents the engine from starting if anything other than P or N is selected. When you say "I have a number of electrical faults on my car", what exactly do you mean? Start at the beginning and tell us what you've done and why, and maybe we'll have a better chance of helping you mate.

  45. You can have it on all the time if you wish although you lose a bit of performance. I use it sometimes in stop/start traffic which makes it easier to drive smoother. Not 100% sure on the RX series II but snow mode is normally reset when the engine is turned off, so you would have to press the button every time you used the vehicle if you wanted to keep it on all the time. It doesn't use more fuel, possibly a bit less as you tend not to drive so hard. The other posting about sports ECT mode are general posting and not specifically about the RX. The IS, GS and even import RX300 have this power mode. The UK RX300s do not have this.

  46. just reading about that in lexus manual help minimize rear wheel spin

  47. It's ECT PWR and SNOW Basically, the ECT is like a "sports" button on AUTO's .... just holds the revs out a bit longer ...... and keeps gear in for longer before it changes. SNOW is the opposite, it kills the "kick down" feature in an auto .... so if ICY/SNOW wheather conditions are apparent, you can't 'kick down' and lose control.
