  1. A few scuffs on one so getting that sorted but it looks like I'm all set for Beast from the East 2. In today's news, boom! Feast your eyes on this. The car is now virtually silent

  3. Well, my Dad was very impressed with how smooth and quiet the LS400 is. He had a good drive in it, loved the drive and the build quality. At the moment my Dad drives a 2005 C230K saloon which has seen better days to be honest, I drove it to Liverpool and back last weekend (100 mile round trip), it's difficult/not fair to compare but I'd rather drive the LS400 any day and don't care if it uses more fuel. Regarding the LS400, it was at the main dealers on Saturday morning for a 'health/safety' check and the result is below. After the check I sat down with the service manager and went through everything they found, they love getting a LS400 in and we spent some time discussing all about them. The service manager has worked for Toyota/Lexus for a long long time and is very passionate and knowledgeable about the LS400. All the people were great and nothing was too much trouble. The results: Underneath is very good (after the work I did removing rust and treating etc), timing belt needs replacing as it's 10 years since the last one (according to an old receipt) and maybe a thermostat plus water pump depending on what they find doing the belt, front strut bushes are split, missing front brake backing plate (I didn't notice this but I was concentrating on other things), front brake discs and pads needed (I knew this and have these ready to fit), brake fluid needs replacing, needs an alignment, rear discs are good but pads need replacing really. I'll be fitting poly front strut bushes @ £38 for the pair and see how it goes, if they turn out to affect the ride etc too much I'll have to bite the bullet and pay for 2 x new arms but for £38 it's worth a go I think. I've read that the Toyota Century front strut bushes ( part# 48674-40051 ) fit the LS400 but I don't know if that is correct. If I could get them from Lexus UK at a reasonable price then I may try them so will need to give them a call. Oil level slightly low so they topped it up. The car is going into Lexus Bolton in a few weeks for them to do the following: Timing belt plus thermostat and water pump if needed, new front brake backing plate (there is a way to do this without removing the bearing etc apparently), new rear pads while they are at it, full alignment and brake fluid replacement. Before it goes in I'll be doing the front discs/pads, drop links front and rear, anti roll bar bushes front and rear, front strut bushes (drop links and anti roll bar bushes will be done if they arrive in time). I will be doing the capacitors in the ECU soon as well. Sorry this isn't exactly 'what I've done today' but more like what I will be doing or having done.......

  4. There are no problems carrying both the card and the fob. I keep the card in my wallet all the time and the fob in my pocket so that I can open the boot remotely if required.

  6. Hi Mike and welcome to the club. I had a 2005 RX300 and I had it converted to run on LPG. It was a great car, very comfortable, great ride etc. I purposely avoided the SEL variant because that has air suspension and I really did not want that as it's so expensive to fix when it goes wrong, so mine was an SE-Nav. Is there anything specific you want to know?

  8. Garage say that pads seized and now ok. Took them a couple of hours to sort and as bottom caliper pins were replaced a few weeks ago and calipers cleaned up unsure why the pads seized so quickly. Also unsure how car could roll so freely yet pads heat discs so much. Anyway sorted foc other than taking 1/2 day traveling and waiting for work to be done. Thanks for suggestions, etc. Prize goes to i-s.

  11. I replaced the brake fluid on mine a couple of weeks ago and to be honest the fluid was pretty clean and so were the nipples which loked like the rubber boot had never been off . A retired garage owner friend helped me with the pedal pushing and was amazed the condition of the fluid after twenty years. I cannot say it as been in that long but it as never had a Lexus service for that long so it could have been.I did find the brakes a tad more keen after the job and there was some air in the system when we did the expulsion of old fluid. The fluid changes on the Lexus service schedule are aimed at worst case scenario of wear and tear of moving parts and of course time, but I change my oil every two years because I do less than 4k a year and the car as done 43k so I won't be changing the transmission fluid as it is as pink as a baby's bum and smells like new.

  12. Hi Paul, I'm not that familiar with air suspension but after a quick search it seems that you're on the right track and can source plumbing style speedfit fittings. To insert a nylon repair line into the damper would something like this work? - it would fit inside a nylon extension line for you. https://www.speedwaymotors.com/Air-Suspension-Tube-Insert-Sleeve-3-8-Outside-Tube-Diameter,115324.html Then you'd just need to use a straight press fit coupler to splice into your existing line. I say 'just' as you still need to ensure the fittings are press fit and you'd also need to confirm the hose size/etc that you required. This page has a range of air line fittings (I have no affiliation with them) https://www.speedwaymotors.com/shop/air-suspension-air-line-fittings~14-16-463-23578 Good luck and let us know how you get on.

  13. Amazing job. He certainly knows his stuff and as these things tend to be, it was a bigger job than originally thought. But he moved work round so I wouldn't have to make the trip again. The car is so much better. Very much recommended.

  14. To add my tuppence worth, running on hydrocarbons will damage the planet, and running on Lithium will damage the planet. Lithium Mining Ms Thunberg is right to want to save the planet, but Electric cars are not going to save the planet (or our grand childrens lungs - with particulates) The Oslo Effect I drive a reliable Lexus knowing that my total carbon footprint is 'okay', and yes it would be nice to be able to walk to work (which I did when I lived in Central Bristol), and it would be nice to be able to afford to catch a train to have a nice break in the Lake District, rather than schlep up the M5/M6. I remember the days when the old steel mills and coal mines of the Welsh Valleys had been poisoning the rivers (and soil) for many years, but now fish are back in the Ebbw, the Taff ,and the slag heaps are recovering. (on the other hand we have just passed the problem over the the Chinese who are doing huge damage to their eco-system - watch the file from 2015 Behemoth) I love my LS400, and if it were to die, I am not sure whether I could downsize to a Mazda 2 (like my missus has just done, 1.5litre 124BHP, over 50 to gallon), but I sure as heck am not going to scrap the 400 (or sell it on) just to get a heavy car with a big battery. No simple answers, which I am sure Ms Thunberg will appreciate as time goes by, but at least she is trying to get complacent politicians to take it a bit more seriously that we only have one planet

  15. Car play means that you are not restricted to using the car built-in systems. It allows you to use a satnav system of your choice such as Google Maps or Waze which offer more customisation options and are generally more accurate (you don't have to pay for map updates) and respond quicker to traffic conditions. Also you need to consider that, with AA or CP integration, you do not need to spent additional money for a built-in system if your car does not come with one by default. In addition, you can use Google Assistant handsfree and you can control Spotify without having to touch your phone (other music apps are available! ;-)) It's all about choice and functionality.

  16. One of the issues is that HID/LED headlights have automatic levelling, which is not a requirement for halogen headlights which rely on manual adjustment (from inside the car)

  18. My 2019 RC300 came with both the usual key fob and the key card. The card does not need to be carried with the fob, it functions instead of the fob, just no buttons. The card can be left in one's pocket/wallet, it doesn't slot in anywhere. It's just meant as a less bulky/obtrusive device for opening the car.. I imagine carrying both might confuse the car regarding the easy entry memory settings and climate memory settings.

  21. The UX is available in the UK with only two brands of run flat tyres. Bridgestone and Dunlop. Prior to purchase we had many test drives and found that the Bridgestone were extremely noisy on every UX but the Dunlop very quiet. We placed an order for the UX but requested Dunlop tyres. It arrived with Bridgestone but the Dealer ordered Dunlops and changed the tyres for us. We are very, very pleased with the low road noise. Hope this is the answer to your concerns regarding tyre/road noise. Maybe your local Lexus Dealer has a demonstrator with Dunlops you can compare. Paul

  22. Run flat tyres are definitely noisier and also provide a harder ride too

  23. Saggy rear suspension, I'd walk away for that price. Looking at the prices, the LS seem to be appreciating. I paid £4400 for my 2004/03 plate LS with 91k miles in Jan 2018.

  25. Take it to the dealer. Chances are they'll replace the wheels within warranty period. However, yours are diamond cut wheels and unfortunately this will happen again - no manufacturer with diamond cut wheels is yet to cure lacquer bonding issues. Simple fact of the matter is that lacquer does not bond well to bare metal. ^^ This is utter BS by the way. Lexus of old used to suffer with corrosion issues, we're talking pre-2013 models. Most wheels that have come out on a Lexus from 2013 onwards providing they are not diamond cut or a special finish have been very durable. Ive had 3 since, no corrosion even when they've had kerb nicks
