  1. That figure alone is astounding, a car company that didn't make a single car till 2008, and currently only has 3 models in their lineup two of which starts at $100k is achieving 2/3 the volume of alternative fuel cars sales of Toyota, one of the biggest car manufacturers on the planet.......So who is the bigger threat to who?? As for fuel cost, our Tesla still costs me £0 to refuel at a Tesla Supercharger and about £6 to refuel at home. Ionity increasing their prices just demonstrates how far ahead Tesla are of the competition. Incidentally there are currently less than half a dozen Ionity charging sites in the UK, versus so many Tesla Supercharger sites I've lost count. There are challenges to Tesla, Toyota/Lexus are not it. And the more Toyota wastes their time with the Mirai the more danger they will face in the future. Nokia phone sales actually peaked in 2007, hitting 50% market share in Q4, the same time when Apple first launched their iPhone. No big tech analyst at the time would have predicted what happened next......At the rate Tesla is catching up to Toyota in the US, Toyota executives need to be worried, but like Nokia I suspect the realization they haven't adapted in time may come too late!

  2. Been wanting an RX400H for years, looked at a few but was always disappointed poor history trim missing dirty, took one out last week a 2008 filthy dirty inside and out wipers perished tailgate not working 160k. Trouble with these cars is even a bad one runs nice it was smooth on the road no bangs rattles quiet drove really well, but it was too much of a project at £3900. I have also been visiting this site for years looking for information but always left disappointed, most people talk about taking the car to the main dealer very little information for the home mechanic, however it has finally dawned on me there is so little information as so little goes wrong on these vehicles, its not just this site its all Lexus sites. There have been some good pointers and info on the common issues. Its unusual for an RX to appear for sale where i live being a small market town the diesel 4x4 is king but one came up a couple of days ago that seemed too good to be true, a 2005 SE-L 61k full history fresh MOT and advertised as excellent condition seller admitted on the phone he had been offered £3k on a trade in and was looking a bit more. Went along for a look and checked for wet carpets, took out the storage box in the boot to look for water ingress bone dry, checked the history which was a full main dealer Lexus serviced every two years, car barely managed 6k a year and about 2k for the past 4 years. Inside was immaculate except for a small mark on the rear seat. Would appear to have been owned by an elderly driver and was garaged, perhaps poor health was the reason for so few miles the past four years. MOT had no advisories super clean underneath even the original alloys are almost perfect. Only faults I could find were touch screen was not working but one was on order and is included in the sale, a little condensation inside both rear lights, rear hatch a little slow to open and well that's it, four nearly new tire's all electrics working oil looked clean even has the original head phones. So I bought it will collect mid week and post a few pictures then. Plans, check with the Lexus garage to see what work has been done specifically the timing belt, replace the pins in the rear calipers and waxoyl the underside, fit one of those GROM BT units when the radio is out, check the tailgate, blow out the sunroof drains, polish wax and drive.

  3. I have, I picked it up yesterday. I am definitely looking at trying to pick up an exhaust from a Fellow member as while it sounds great, you really need to be going for it to hear it and I do like a lower down rumble. Other than that, cannot fault it. Next step is to ppf and the front and ceramic coat as it will be spending its time outdoors and I think that will be it

  5. James, my Lexus Extended Warranty has breakdown cover FOR ME AND ANY VEHICLE IN WHICH I AM TRAVELLING.Yours will too. I called them yesterday to attend to my son`s car which was on my drive and the bonnet release mechanism had failed. The AA came promptly and gained entry in no time.Read your Policy Document....................Good luck.

  6. Very straight forward, apart from the usual round of broken bolts and plastic clips. Trip to local car parts shop first thing tomorrow 😊

  7. Lexus will charge you the earth. I bought one of these blanks off ebay (£2.25) and got a local key cutter (they must have a lazer cutting machine) to cut the blade from the old one (£10) You just pop the transponder in from the old key and job done. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-BUTTON-KEY-FOB-CASE-for-LEXUS-RX400H-SC430-RX300-IS200-300-GS300-short-Blade/283544136765?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649

  8. Welcome Tom. I agree with the first line of James` response to you. If you did buy from a Dealer , Do not however, follow his advice in his next paragraph,,,,,,, lest the Dealer disowns the car claiming that you have done something that has caused your niggle(s). If you bought the car privately, then take it to your Lexus Dealer and obtain a quotation for remedying such problems as they find. Then report back to the Forum with the findings so that we can advise you further. Good luck.

  9. A Lexus dealer is the obvious answer. Ideally you want the key stolen to be removed from the system, so if you go to an independent make sure they can do that. Is there a way for your vehicle/address to be determined from what was stolen? Possibly you should think about the mechanical locks being changed too.

  10. I meant that's the standard list of items you normally see on an old ISF (like mine). Nothing worse than that.

  11. Thanks for that I did it today, pretty easy with the back wheel off. I didnt have to dismantle the linkage - it was just the ball joints on either end that were seized so the length didn't change. I took the linkage off the car and soon had the joints moving again with WD40, the rubber seals were a bit worn but I squirted the WD in with a fine straw to wash out the joints then got my gease gun with a pointed nozzle and filled the joints with waterproof grease. The whole job only took about 45 mins - I know Lexus were going to replace the linkage and sensor with new rather than refurb the existing but even so, I think they were pulling my pants down with that quote !

  14. Thanks Herbie - I'm sure a more skilled person than myself would have been able to get your suggestion working. A car stealing kit from Amazon (https://www.amazon.co.uk/YOUNG4-Universal-Window-Airbag-Emergency/dp/B07X94LPYB/ref=sr_1_8?keywords=airbag+key+kit+car+door&qid=1579439427&sr=8-8) is only around £20-25 which I'm sure is way less than calling a locksmith out, so I'll try this first. One of my step sons lost the key to the postbox in a flat he once lived in, and to avoid a charge of £90 to have the lock replaced, I picked it with a set of lock picks from Amazon (£8) and replaced it with a new lock from Screwfix (£12) so I do like the challenge of learning new and nefarious skills! I will report back on progress. The MOT and service on Tuesday is looking very unlikely now.

  15. When I originally complained about the non-availability of flaps for my new RC, my Lexus mechanic, who was as surprised as I was, offered to talk with his colleagues in the body shop about possibly fitting and/or modifying ones from other marques and models besides Lexus itself. Toyota, Subaru and the KIA dealership next door were mentioned. He called me few days later after concluding that the idea was unworkable - or not recommended - because of a series of practical factors including attachment reliability and possible functional ineffectiveness besides aesthetic appearance.

  16. Not sure on the NX but some models do have a range adjustment, but it is a dealer / Carista / TechStream setting rather than being available via the vehicle set up interface. Might be worth asking your dealer.

  18. I went with this firm in the end and I can't thank you enough for recommending them. Ordered on the Sunday and arrived on the Wednesday all the way from California. Parts were spot on and in excellent condition. Prices were brilliant also. Car is now back on the road - Thanks again :)

  19. The reason I bought one was lack of know issues and over 5 years of ownership had only one - corroded sliding pins of rear brake calipers. Car was out of warranty at that time, managed myself with only new sliding pins and some cleaning. Except for this only regular service over 50k miles.

  20. There should be a Cabin Filter. Its a double and its the Passenger side footwell - looking upward. Can't recall exactly how I got to it (probably need remove the panel) but do remember its a bit of a task to change. If its never been changed it will be full of dust, dirt and bits of tree debris.

  22. Hi i have an is200 2002 i added the headlight Washers and I can tell you that the cabling is there. for the auto adjusting of the headlights you have only partial cabling, the connector for the ecu is there but cabling to lamps is stopping behind the fuses box. The tilt sensors are not wired and the wheel support don’t have fitting for the tilt sensors. i added the auto dimming mirror but I had to take the wires from the fuse i but with the drawings it is easy. the automatic transmission is a hell. You have to change the wiring the ecu because between manual and auto the ecu has more pins to control the gearbox solenoids and has the connections for the cruise control . I know this because I tried to add the cruise control. the dashboard is different for the indication. And at the end probably you don’t have it written on your car papers and you can get problems with the police. now as soon I have time I will add autolevelling lights with hid and the vsc. I saw no wiring but I have built it. I added the navigation but I need original radio to activate but I’m studying how to do it . i added the alarm system and even there no wiring for moovement detector in dome light and siren in trunk . System even without these parts works.

  23. This reminds me of the story my parents told me. They shared a house with another couple around 1955 and my Dad and the other chap rebuilt an Austin A40 Somerset engine on the kitchen table much to the annoyance of the ladies.

  24. Agree, the very local locksmith in our town did some considerable sucking of teeth and told me I'd be lucky to find someone to cut it before pointing me in the direction of the locksmith that did, in my nearest city! So your suggestion does sound a better route.

  25. Thanks for the recommendation Herbie, I may well use that seller. It all looks good. We've been out to walk the dog this morning, there was no juddering that the OH reported, but perhaps a slight wheel bearing rumble. We haven't used the parking brake so perhaps will use it one evening to test the following morning. What beautiful weather today! Perfect for car cleaning. Unfortunately I have 3 to do if that's the case...

  26. No offence to Stu above but I wouldn't go with his suggestion because when I did, I couldn't find any local locksmiths and/or key cutters to cut it. They all refused saying their machines had been damaged in the past by these very hard "eBay specials" as they called them. So I used this guy instead and can highly recommend him. Still an eBay trader, but he cuts the blank himself from either your key code if you have it, or a photo if you haven't.

  27. Many thanks everyone for your reples, I've had a mooch through the service history and there is no evidence that the gearbox oil has been changed, so i will make that a priority, hopefully this weekend. I must say, i drove it yesterday and the whine seemed less intrusive than i remember, and also does sound a little like the faint electric motor sound. I've still yet to drive it from cold, so not sure about this juddering. How easy is it to replace keys on these? I imagine they need to be registered with the cars electric wizardry? The valet and the spare (now my key apparently!) are both falling to bits which i imagine is quite common. If the weather is any good this weekend, i may even clean it. Will be good to get acquainted with any imperfections so they can be monitored. Tom.

  31. On FB Colin said he'd bought it unseen hence my leap of faith comment. That said, you know the story of mine and 3.5k miles in it's still going strong. Another thing you should look at straight away Colin is to check for rust under the car. If it's sourced from further south then fair enough but I looked at the underneath of a 400h that had spent its life around Aberdeen and it was very badly corroded.

  33. Sticking slide pins on the rear callipers are a common problem. Not normally a need to replace the entire callipers at a not inconsiderable cost---just remove the slide pins, clean and apply some new grease.. If the slide pins are too far gone you can but them off Ebay for a very reasonable price https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Genuine-Rear-Brake-Caliper-Slide-Pin-47814-48050-Fits-Lexus-RX330-RX350-RX400/273945308834?fits=Car+Make%3ALexus%7CModel%3ARX&epid=1216788949&hash=item3fc869aea2:g:dD0AAOSwD~Fbt3MS Whilst you are at it probably worthwhile fitting new rubber end caps as well https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GENUINE-BRAKE-CALIPER-SLIDE-PIN-DUST-BOOT-COVER-TOYOTA-CAMRY-LEXUS-RX-4777541030/293040972438?fits=Car+Make%3ALexus%7CModel%3ARX&epid=1516739201&hash=item443a9a6296:g:Of4AAOSwT6pVoSQS Hope this helps

  34. I use the CTEK MXS3.8 on our GS450h. What's really nice with the CTEKs is that they come with not only the alligator clips for battery posts, but also ring terminals to a connector that you can attach to the battery loom in the car - that way you can simpy plug in the connector rather than messing about with risky clips that can come off and short out.

  35. A lot of people like the Ctek MXS 5.0 https://www.ctek.com/products/vehicle/mxs-5-0 Have a look around Amazon or eBay for prices.

  38. Just a quick update to everyone here as a thanks to those who replied. Yesterday, between the rain, I found a nearby scrap yard that was breaking a 400h and went there. I tried a relay, and it wasn't the relay. So when I took off the panel to try a new motor instead, it turns out that a cable (I think the one that goes to the rain sensor) had broken off and got completely tangled in the mechanism. As soon as I untangled the wires the motor started working properly again. I'm not sure what damage being jammed all of that time did so I replaced it anyway (£30). Now I need to look at how to fix the rain sensor. I sense a new post coming up...

  39. I would be thinking gearbox or diff if you can feel something and you have 'jerking', and the whine goes away in neutral. On the other hand the feeling could be just tyre wear. Wondering if it could be water pump whining away? My experience of Gearbox Oil is that it can get pretty dirty, and smelly and the transmission does not whine, but it you have low oil in the gear box, that is not a good thing. I used Automatic Transmissions of Gloucester to do a proper oil replace at 130,000 miles, and they seem to know their Lexus and Jag gearboxes. (their Google Reviews are variable), but I found them to be professional.

  40. The oddly worn tyres could be a factor. Not having 4 even tyres can have wheels rotating at slightly different speeds and wind up parts of the drivetrain enough to push gears into each other and cause mild vibration or gear noise like a sight whine. Not an easy thing to check though unless you're prepared to go to the expense of fitting 4 identical tyres. .

  41. If you bought from a dealer take it back under warranty for them to sort! I would say get the gearbox oil changed and go from there, also check the gearbox mount. Then get it on a ramp and check for play in bushes etc. I doubt unless asked for a gearbox drain/refill, if Lexus would of done it. Also check brakes for sticking. James.

  44. You could try Rockauto in the US, they supply many parts for older/classic cars but I'm not sure if it was called a Soarer in the US do you would need to check that.

  45. MOT history of an ISF. Advisories A) Tyre Wear B) Brake Wear C) Covers fitted preventing inspection D) Child seats fitted preventing seatbelt inspection E) All the above. I had one show up for a rusted exhaust mount. Soon sorted that out. Can't have an exhaust hanging off like some MK1 Renault Clio 1.2 Equipe. 😉
