  1. Thank you all for the useful tips and pearls - The Hybrid check is up to date Hangie - Lexus Hayes quoted £140 for a transmission oil change for the GS300h, I can live with that! As you stated its likely a smaller volume of oil than the GS450h After reading the above replies I took bit the bullet and did a deal this afternoon! I'll pick her up on Wednesday and try to get he transmission oil done later this week. I look forward to many more thousands of miles of happy motoring. Can't wait! Thanks again folks!

  2. If the car has got valid hybrid check paperwork I wouldn't worry about the batteries as Lexus warranty them now for 15 years if they are checked annually. Having owned a 2015 GS300h Luxury pre face-lift I would thoroughly recommend the model.

  3. Well done. The only thing I had on mine was a leaky water pump gasket. That was done under warranty but I was told it was around £300 at Lexus if not warranty including the cost of a new water pump. It was found on service and labour time was around 40 minutes.

  4. The part arrived having ordered on eBay on Friday. Very good service! I worked from home this afternoon so I could tackle the wing mirror. My first idea was to simply swap the glass over. That proved to be a non starter so I eventually replaced the entire wing mirror with the new (used) part, which involved taking the door card off and faffing about loosening trim pieces. All back together and fully functional now however and £140 is considerably better than the £500+ it would have been at a Lexus. My word my car is filthy... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  5. Honest John regularly reports that Toyota Prius Hybrid Batteries often exceed 400,000 miles. The GS is a wonderful Motor Car. If you are buying from a Dealer you can always take it to a Lexus Dealer after purchase and ask him to tell you if it has any significant problems. And if he finds any, then you can go back to the First Dealer (within 6 months) and ask him to rectify at his cost in accordance with your rights under the various Sale of Goods Acts. Good luck Nish and do let us know what you decide.

  7. I was looking to get my IS250 to 200k miles, but as it happened I got a new car just 8k miles short. It was amazing car and I am rather sad changing it... It was time thought, in summer old guy bumped into me (his fault) and insurance decided to write-off the car. Considering, mileage and age it would have been stupid to fight the offer and I ended-up taking it and keeping the car as well. However, knowing the car is Cat-N I was not willing to spend and keep-it in perfect shape, like before the accident. Eventually, I came to terms it has to go! Recently, picked-up fully loaded RC200t ... yes the same one with trash can engine - I stand by my comments... please hold the slack (I can almost hear @doog442 laughing in far dark corner)! it was just too good deal to miss... so I didn't. Still furious that Lexus screw everyone up in UK and never introduced 350...😫 Anyway, my IS journey was well documented and I wanted to share some interesting statistics about the car: Summary of all faults: 49k Wheels replaced by Lexus under warranty due to excessive corrosion cost £0 122k I suspect the battery was replaced to halfrauds one - cost unknown 149k AC compressor reconditioned £310 (OEM parts dealer work would have been ~£900) 152k replaced the battery £72 (Bosch S4) 177k Front anti-roll bar links replaced - to be honest total waste of money because there was only tine hole in the rubber ball-joint cover, but it was MOT fail @162k £100 (dealer part labor would be £160) 177k Lower ball joints replaced - again same reason, hole in ball-joint cover... could have lasted another 100k, I didn't want to fail another MOT, only needed one but replaced both sides £160 (I think OEM would have been ~£300) 182k Steering inner/outer track-rod £40+£16 (OEM), nothing wrong with them, but needed wheel alignment and bolts were just rusted together due to excessive heating in the past. 182k AC pressure sensor - £14 (apparently OEM). That is all for 13 years and 192k miles!! works out~ £702 for faults or just £54/year or £36/10k miles. In the same time car has 15 Lexus service stamps (not quite FLSH...) with £6315 spent in total - average of £415 per service in some cases including overpriced tyres, discs, pads and 2 sets of calipers.... that is not bad for luxury car and dealership service. This must be cheapest luxury car to own in terms of maintenance. Some other statistics: I have covered ~71k miles in 5.5 years and I reckon about 65% of miles were done in city. Burnt ~11244.7L of petrol for total of £12,256 which equates @ average price of ~£1.09/L or ~2228/year MPG (always did brim-to-brim calculation) stands at AVG-28.3, MAX-48.9, MIN-19.0 (it was getting lower towards the end due to suspected "lazy" o2 sensor/MAF or airflow meter, but for first 4 years stood around 29.2MPG) Oil has been replaced in total 13 times and I reckon it has burnt ~4.5L or 5W30 oil (or ~0.64L/10k miles), except once when I used 0W40 and it did not burn any between services. Changed front discs twice, 4 pairs of front pads, 4pairs of rear pads and never replaced read discs. Refurbished all calipers once Replaced the halfrauds battery to Bosch Changed 3 sets of tyres - car came with Dunlop SP Sportmaxx, then changed to set of Dunlop Sportmaxx RT which lasted me 37k miles (highly recommended) and finally the set of Michelin Pilot Sport 4's which were still in good shape last time I have checked (~6.5mm) after 23k miles. In summary, it still felt more powerful, more nimble and more enjoyable to drive compared to new 300h or 200t Lexus cars, the only downside - it was getting old...

  8. Plus 1 for the Castrol A5 Magnatec - Halfords had it on offer before Christmas at £15 for 4 litres, not sure if it is still available at that price. Filters i find from Eurocarparts for around £8 (think the brand is mann or crossland) not had an issue. Air filter i have used is an oiled K&N and had that for years now, just clean it every year or so.You will need a special tool to remove the oil filter housing but the work is really easy to do and everything is accessible. Cabin filter worth doing also. Gearbox is not worth the hassle in doing unless you are getting error codes

  11. The vents can get restricted - having a dog in the car doesn't help. I don't think I have ever heard my fans. It is straightforward though tedious to remove the boot trim and then remove the duct connecting the fan to the vent on rear parcel shelf. It is then easy to clean. John

  12. Just pop your car reg in euro car parts and it should come up with the correct oils then ring lexus and clarify .

  13. No. Battery codes = hybrid system failsafe/limp/etc - no torque fill, engine always on, "sluggish" (there's still a lot of power in the GS, the delivery is severely delayed though), info screen shows no power flow. There's a "hybrid system overheat" message that the car can display. What are the exact codes? Re: the pump - I recall reading instances in several places where the pump was causing issues without throwing codes. Re: battery fan - there's only one, you can access it by removing the top/center trim in the trunk... well, that and several pieces of plastic ducting. I haven't removed the filter itself yet.

  14. Hi I've done some more homework. Unfortunately I don't believe you can saw it for 3 individual fuses. This is the part... https://www.lexuspartsdirect.co.uk/parts/lexus-ct/lexus-ct-2010-onwards/lexus-ct-engine-service-kits/lexus-ct-phase-1-50a-30a-30a-fusible-link/ Part number is 90982-08300 CTP1 Think it retails for £17, but is £13.56 on the site. Hopefully this helps someone in the future and fixes my issue.

  15. I am rely missing my car. It may be 14 years older than the Merc C class loan car, but in noise level, and comfort the Lexus is way ahead of the Merc. Ok being fare the Merc is an oil burner, but I would have thought that they would have found how to soundproof the cabin from the engine noise by now. It reminded me of some of my company cars I had 20 or more years ago when after getting out of the car after a long run I could still hear that buzzing drone. I cannot wait to get back to near silent comfort, and performance of the GS hybrid. Unfortunately it could be some time as the rear door is on back order from Japan. The good side is that my car is tucked up in a workshop while I am using a loan car in the bad weather, and salty roads. I need to do my headlamps as they look to be about the same condition as yours. I do not think the clouding is affecting the light output as it only seems "like yours" to be on the top surface. Lee how easy was the kit to use? and would you recommend it?

  16. Only when you ease off the throttle... try driving in "sports" gear mode (S-mode, next to D), this keeps the engine on. When the engine switches off, the auxiliary oil pump in the transmission runs to maintain oil pressure for the MG2 2speed auto. If you're clearing the codes via a reader (which you shouldn't do - the state it's in when these codes are set protects the battery to an extent), it might be this... if the HV battery codes are present, the engine always runs, the info screen shows no power flow and regen braking is disabled, amongst other things. In other words, might be a failing pump.

  17. When I bough my previous GS I haven't received usual certificate for the "hybrid health check", but it was serviced by a dealership according to the service book. What I have done is just gave them a call and after a week they has send me over duplicate 🙂 So if you have a dealer stamp give them a call.

  18. Update: I've just completed the annual service (oil/filters) along with a diff oil change. The diff filler and drain plugs are awkward to access around a exhaust hanger, if only they were on the other side! Interestingly on the last stealer invoice they use heavier diff oil 85W-90 vs the correct weight 75W-85 🤔 Will see how it goes on a good run in a few days time. I'll take another look at the instructions for a transmission oil change, I vaguely recall that it's not so straight forward so may ask Lex-Tek to do this. Passenger heat is still poor 🙁 and to keep mrs F happy I've ducted the drivers footwell output over there, it ain't pretty but it works. I did try and duct smaller pipes inside and over the center console but they didn't work well at all. Finally I gave my headlights quick sand/buff which has made a big difference, using a Holts kit. I didn't sealer/clear them as it's a bit chilly damp, so I'll do this when the weather improves - along with another quick buff.

  19. Re the hybrid battery, I'd say that a 2014 car that has covered that distance is most likely a car that has lived life on the motorway - this does not charge/discharge the hybrid battery anything like as much as in-town, stop-start driving does. That means the battery will have been through relatively few cycles and should be in reasonable shape.

  20. The 15 year warranty relies on the vehicle having a hybrid health check in the last 12 months / 10k miles. This is independent on servicing. Info here, see the Warranty sub section; https://www.lexus.co.uk/owners/servicing-and-maintenance/hybrid-health-check/#health-check

  21. Unfortunately they are dealer supply only. One of mine has just snapped on a 2011 RX450h. Unfortunately the bottom bolt has also seized (carrier to hub) and they will need to cut it off. The bolt has taken nearly 3 weeks to come but they have also had to order a replacement hub as if it damages the bush the bolt goes through this is not a separate item but attached to the hub, meaning nearly £800 in parts alone rather then just a spring and bush. If anyone has an RX450h especially an older one I would advise you check these lower bolts to make sure they are not seized and if they are not then keep them greased or replace them asap.

  22. Its possible but I think that would be very unlikely. Even if there was an unknown error I would expect the car to produce an error code if it was the generic 'something went wrong' code. I'd be very surprised if it was an inverter issue since when the car is working it accelerates perfectly(hybrid and petrol) and I can see the regenerative breaking is also functioning fine. The hybrid kicks in when accelerating normally. From what I understand if there were issues with the other parts of the hybrid system I should be seeing other error codes been produced. Also if it was an inverter issue I would expect the issue to happen more when the inverter is under strain than anything else but I can quite happily put my foot down and the hybrid system functions perfectly. I can also see it regenerating power at it's maximum listed rate under heavy breaking. Given a few people have said this issue can be caused by the battery, I'm kinda betting on that. I've only looked up the error code on my OBD reader so far and cross-referenced that with Lexus. I've downloaded techstream and have ordered a OBD to USB cable but until that arrives can't do much more.

  23. Battery warranty was extended to 15 years some time ago, so your car is still eligible if yearly service is done. I have never heard about batteries issues with such symptoms as yours hence I'm betting on another components of hybrid drive. Are you checking with a proper Toyota interface and tech stream software ? Have you tired to check the car status with tech stream when "ready" light is off but ignition is on ? Maybe controllers are faulty and don't store error, or maybe your problem is so rare there is no error code for that - for example gearbox ECU is handing up or similar.

  24. I have no idea from where they got this lifetime bull**** mantra. I guess it must be importers who are trying to convince you the car require less maitanance than it really needs. I've heard some French manufacturer are giving you 20k miles service interval while German ones says 10k - what is funny both cars got exactly same engine 🙂 With Lexus I have never seen lifetime recommendation for a gearbox oil, it is just not part of a standard UK dealerships full/minor cycle but if you check Lexus tech docs you will find it must be checked and changed. I've only owned 450h (III and IV gen) and changed gearbox oil in both of them. Both were done by Lexus Guildford without any issues. Attached is a proper maintenance schedule for gen III, it only runs up to 54k miles but: - In severe conditions inspect (and change if needed) every 27k miles / 3 years - In severe conditions change every 54k miles / 6 years - In normal conditions inspect (and change if needed) every 36k miles / 4 years - In normal conditions plan is not expanding so far (beyond lifetime ? 🙂 )but following same logic of inspect/change intervals it should be done every 72k miles / 8 years Good advise before you change the oil for the 1st time which is long time overdue is to check how it does look like as it might be too late. serwis.pdf PS. As for the cost. In GS450h III gen 4 years back I've paid £200 area. For GS450h IV gen 2 years back I've paid the same but it could be a mistake as different delarer wanted £400 for it 🙂 300h might be cheaper as gearbox is probably smaller = less oil. Give them a call and share here 🙂 I wouldn't recommend indy as procedure is pretty complex. Drain/refill is done via cooling hose and Lexus software is needed to do it right. It is not just drain plug and refill via dipstick anymore.

  25. 130k miles is not something you should be scared of if car was properly serviced. Of course there will be few extra maitanance items to do at but car should still have plenty of life. If not changed already expect the front brakes replacement. Check that coolant was changed at 100k and spark plugs at 120k. If not you need to change both quickly. Finally transmission oil should be changed soon for the 2nd time. I wouldn't be surprised if it wasn't done before so then you should check the state of the oil and if not in very poor condition change ASAP. PS. Don't forget to renew hybrid warranty every year.

  26. Every car I've owned has suffered this, inherent in the design of the window rubbers with a felt insert to help reduce scratches. Nothing to be done, except don't wind the windows down until the water has evaporated!

  27. I can see this being a very expensive job one way or the other - so much so that I'd be returning the car to the dealer as not fit for purpose and get my money back. I'm no expert by any means but in my humble opinion the failing traction battery is more than likely not the cause but a symptom - what's making it fail and will it make the new one fail too? As long as the hybrid health check is carried out annually, Lexus extend the warranty on the battery each year to a maximum of 15 years and as far as I'm aware there's no mileage limit on that. Hybrids don't have a traditional starter motor (I believe it's MG1 that starts the petrol engine) or alternator. In fact, anything that would normally be driven by a belt from the engine, such as power steering pump, aircon compressor etc., is done electrically on a hybrid and controlled by the hybrid system. When that READY light goes out and the hybrid system fails, you lose all these things and the car cannot be driven on the petrol engine alone.

  30. Car AC systems are prone to leaks because of the requirement to be able to assemble the system in a car with many pipe joints that are just "O" ring seal push fit, and a simple clip to hold the joint together. If these joints were made with screwed fittings or better still brazed as in refrigerators or freezers the fault rate would drop significantly. I realise this would cost more in production, but the cost would be less than the cost of one refill, and the amount of greenhouse gasses lost through leaks would also be significantly reduced. Condenser radiators are also often fitted in vulnerable positions without any real protection from road debris. Have a look at your car to see just how simple it could be to provide good protection. There is no reason in a well designed system why it should be kept on just to help the seals from deteriorating, but wearing out the mechanical s of the expensive compressor, and increasing fuel consumption. John.

  32. Introducing Alexa II. 2004 with 98k and FSH. Mostly Lexus with one independent. Has a few small jobs that need doing as you'd expect for a 16 year old car but nothing major at all. Pretty good paint work, nice and clean underneath. And of course, 3 miles into the journey home this happened 🙄 Still trying to arrange to purchase back my exhaust and LPG kit from the guy who bought my old one. Lord knows I need it. Otherwise it feels good to be back in one of these. I guess I best start a new thread now I have a different car.

  34. Yuasa are good so long as its not one of the batteries prone to cracked welds. They have a long history of that. The Ah rating makes little difference, but the factory battery is 70Ah so I wouldn't go below that. You can get a Varta from here for £85 delivered. https://advancedbatterysupplies.co.uk/product/varta-e23/ May also be worth investing in a solar cell trickle charger if you are prone to leaving the car standing for extended periods of time. They are only £20 now and do the job nicely. A friend has even built his into the rear parcel shelf of his E-class.

  35. I have been notified by the claims handler that my car is being repaired as of today 23/01/20. This could take some time as a new door is on back order from Japan, and the car has been away for 2 weeks. Already the car hire alone is close to £1000. John.

  36. I would stay clear of the IS220d. Lots of issues with the engine and gear box that are all well documented on here. It’s a car that Lexus should have never built as it did their reputation no favours. Buy an IS250 Auto. We ours over a period of 8 years and 90k miles with no mechanical issues. A brilliant car.

  37. Another year and another MOT passed It's not all plain sailing though as the weak heating on the passenger side is worse than ever this winter. At the wkend I took another look at all the servo's and they appear to be working. I had also hoped to confirm that the heater matrix is hot on the passenger side but it's well buried 😞 Both heater pipes are good and hot. The A/C has not been regas'd in the 3 years I've owned the vehicle and I've read that low pressure can cause partial cabin heating issues, across numerous marks altho I don't quite understand why. The A/C does get cold. To get an easier possible cause ticketed off, I'm booked in with Lex-Tek later in the week for an A/C once over 🤞 Before then I hope to get an OBD reader hooked up and confirm the actual engine temp, the dash gauge reads normal. Has anyone experienced (and fixed) lack of passenger heat from any/all of their vents regardless of A/C, mode settings ?
