  1. Six months ago I was offered this car, which my friend bought new in 1996, by the current owner who bough it from him in 2016, but he barely used it. As a result of it sitting on his drive for over 3 years it is now in desperate need of some serious TLC. I have had a few projects since I retired (I don't like golf), but they were all BMW and Mercedes-Benz, so this is my first Lexus. I was offered the car in 2016, when it was still in regular use, but had to refuse due to other projects on the go. Two things in its favour - the mileage of 79,000 and the price of ยฃ400. How could I refuse! So far I am impressed with the build quality, especially compared to my previous projects. As an example, the wheel nuts were not seized and the alloy wheels were not fused to the hub, which has happened frequently to me before. I also noticed that Lexus used what looks like stainless steel bleed nipples - very thoughtful. Once the immobiliser had been disconnected the car started with no trouble, even after its extended slumber. I have made a list of jobs that need doing, but no doubt that will change as I get more familiar with the car: Overhaul the braking system. At least the parking brake works well and wasn't even seized on after 3+ years Change the bonnet struts (common) Treat the car to a new Lexus battery Carry out a full "B" service, although I might pass on checking the valve clearances Replace the timing belt, along with the water pump. I'm not sure about idler and tensioner though. Replace the N/S mirror glass (common) Recommission the A/C Get the climate control LCD display repaired (common). Apparently @steve2006 can help there Get the electric aerial working properly (common) Get the sunroof working properly. Apparently it's never been used in 24 years. Investigate the non-working heated front seats (common) Dry out and clean the interior. It looks as though water has got in behind the dashboard due to a blocked drain Tidy up the bodywork, especially the scrape down the offside Repaint the wheels I did find a rear brake pipe had rusted through, just where it passes through a clip, so I had to cut the pipe and cap it, then I could at least manoeuvre it off the owner's sloping driveway. That was fun! Some photographs follow, but those of you with a sensitive disposition, or OCD tendencies, might want to stop looking now! I will keep you posted with progress, time and weather allowing. PS: Are the registration letters appropriate? VRP = Very Reasonable Project. Alternative suggestions welcome.

  2. Hey everyone, So I took the RX450hL out to RHU and Fastlane Naval base today for a wee roadtrip. Here are some photos from the adventure. Also managed 34.8mpg on the travel (which I think is decent for a 7 seat petrol SUV)

  4. Try swapping the bulbs over, side to side and see if the flickering moves with it. Would rule out a failing ballast?
    1 point
  5. Yes the flickering is one of the symptoms of a dying bulb or possibly ballast, personally I change mine in pairs(as soon as one goes the other is not far behind lol). You definitely can get them cheaper or on the other hand pay a lot more depending on brand ,osram,Phillips etc

  6. Good evening everyone! Thanks all for your comments, I really appreciate it. Steve, I enjoyed your post about your new car and congratulations. John thank you for your advice, I suspect my car is out of the extended warranty, however keeping it serviced by Lexus sounds like the best option. Lee, I used to drive a VW so this is a massive step up and don't need an excuse to go for a drive! With regards to the Tyres, I had some old Dunlops and the car felt like it pulled to the left, I swapped them out for Goodyear eagle F1 tyres and got the tracking re aligned and it now drives perfectly - quite a noticeable difference. I managed to take a few pictures of my car today during daylight hours which i attach. Next steps are to treat the leather seats which have some minor scuffs and signs of wear and tear, any advice would be greatly welcomed. Kind regards, Nick

  7. Iโ€™m afraid I am not optimistic, we havenโ€™t even seen the start of the potential of this terrible situation, with predictions as already stated, a peak in July/August. The worse is definitely yet to come and people need to change behaviour quickly.

  12. If the headlamp units weren't designed (and therefore type approved) for HID or LED then the car will fail the MoT If you replace the complete headlamp unit for HID or LED units then you will also have to retrofit auto-levelling and headlamp wash systems. Best and only cheap legal option, is to fit upgraded bulbs the like of Osram Nightbreakers

  15. Hi, Not long ago I joined the club when I bought my daughter a 400h SE-L, I just loved the car so I bought one myself๐Ÿ˜ I bought it from the same garage based in Penn Bucks, he sells Ferraris, Bentleys, Aston Martins Cobras, you name it he has got it ! Must have over a few million quid worth of cars, I highly recommend him, honest chap. He is going to change the Timing belt, Water Pump, Spark Plugs, Gearbox oil, Brake fluid Brake discs and pads. Hunter allighnment to be done also, 6 months warranty, full service and 12 months mot, new tyres. Full Lexus service history, but after 60000 miles it was an Indi service. The company went bust so he could not verify the gearbox oil change spark plugs and brake fluid change, so he is willing to do it. He knew the garage that went bust, they had a good reputation but he did not want to take a chance so was willing to carry out the work. Took my 2008 Merc E220cdi in P/X for 3 grand and threw in the timing belt water pump and the rest with it. Car in mint condition in and out, its the SE-L MODEL 80000 miles, got the headphones and remote. 5 grand to pay inc the Merc.....and all the work and parts he pays for.... whats your view? Good deal? My daughter and I think this is an excellent forum, and the members are very helpful and above all very polite. Cheers, Sukhi.

  16. And its looks like it's only going to get worse and more expensive,on the newer cars with led lights, you cannot change the dioxides so once they begin to go you will have to change the whole light cluster whereas all you needed to do in the past was change the blown bulbโ˜น๐Ÿค”

  17. Been enjoying the open roads, with some (I'm lying, multiple), red line runs through the gears ๐Ÿ˜‰ Although the F went into service and MOT for tomorrow Schools now closing, expecting even quieter roads in the coming week ๐Ÿ˜„ Heard some chatter through military pals (unsure on reliability), that next week there might be some bans/ curfewscome into affect...

  19. I think a lot of owners do buy them from the US. When I looked that's all I could find. Thankfully I don't have the ML system now.

  20. The Government's policy of banning the sale of hybrids as well as normal ICE only vehicles is daft. I understand the argument that lots of people buy a PHEV and then just use it in ICE mode to obtain the company car tax saving without the inconvenience. However, for private buyers, the hybrid has one big advantageous feature - it overcomes range anxiety which is one of the main deterrents to EV takeup.
