  1. The money grubbing are just trying it on.Shop around. My recent renewal was a 35% hike on the previous year for no reason. I shopped around and ended up with a 10% saving over the previous year. My previous insurer asked me why I'd moved. I told them that I disliked their business model and that loyalty was a 2 way street.

  6. Well I've finally bought one in the colour I really wanted, i picked it up last Saturday and absolutely love it already. There was a few stone chips and a bit of paint scraped off the rear bumper near the wheel arch, so I got some paint mixed up and sorted all that out. Anyway here's some pics

  7. I’ve owned my 2014 300h for about a month now, celestial black SE with 16” wheels, premium nav and black interior. Whilst it’s almost poverty spec it was exactly what I wanted. Bought it with 58,000 on it, ex fleet car so it comes with its own host of ex fleet war wounds, many of which I’ve already taken car of. The car First thing when I got it home was a good wash and polish, that’s when I discovered it was metallic rather than normal black, that was a pleasant bonus. The Prius was the 300h’s predecessor, and from a reliability pilot of view a very difficult car to replace, 130,000 miles in 26 months and not one mechanical failure. Now I wanted 16” wheels because of ride comfort, free road tax and cheaper tyres, this will be used as a taxi so like the Prius will be doing serious mileage, as it stands I’ve done just shy of 4000 miles in 5 weeks so far and have been very impressed. First job, mats, something just to set the interior off a little Then I have to take car of some marks on the interior, these panels were badly scratched so out came the piano black vinyl. Next it was the two way radio and data head. I hate having things on the windscreen, and I wanted this to be as discreet as possible The data head is my meter but also all my job info comes through this. After that, wind deflectors, I’ve had to grind down one of the faces of the deflector on the drivers side as it was causing the window to drag too much. The only other thing fitted was a nextbase cctv camera, I decided to use the hardware kit that was supplied, it was dead easy to fit, took about 30 mins to fit. That was all within a few days of getting the car, the plan was to run the car, find out what needs doing mechanically and set about adding my own touches along the way. First job this week was mudflaps. The Lexus has soft paint and I knew that in a short space of time the mudflaps would rub the paint away in those areas where contact takes place, so I made up some paintwork protectors out of clear vinyl I had in the garage You can’t see the protector very well but it runs parallel with the profile of the mudflaps. Still have the rears to do, that will be the weekend. So jobs to do very soon 60k service Transmission oil Rear axle oil Discs and pads all round Egr cooler cleaned tinted rear windows And then there’s the modification I would like to do....but those I’m still investigating Updates to follow Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  8. I've seen it on mine too. I wondered if it was related to traffic updates. Fortunately, I'm not travelling far enough to need traffic at the moment...

  9. I can imagine! And interesting that you bought a Lexus. I was aware of Ralph Nader and the work he did for car safety but I'd never heard of it referred to as a Nader pin. I also ended up reading about the Tort Museum which was interesting and also the real story of that very popular meme, the woman who sued McDonalds after she spilled coffee in her lap.

  12. My cousin's husband had an interesting experience when he took his 58 reg 65k miles IS250 for a service with Lexus dealer. They said their courtesy car insurance would not cover him as he is 90. The manager solved the problem by driving them to where they were going to go shopping. When they were finished shopping, they rang him and he came and picked them up. He was not too old for them to suggest he might like to trade in the 250 for a new model. John

  13. As we're on to domestic appliances, we've had our Bosch washing machine for about 15 years and still going strong, our Miele vacuum for 6 so far. The best of all is my Rexel stapler, I remember it in our house as a kid and now I have it and it's perfect. My wife on the other hand gets through them at work on a regular basis because they just don't make them like that anymore. Oh yes, our Creda tumble dryer is at least 20 years old.

  14. Thank you for your prompt and always helpful reply Herbs. I understand your logic in this and would not have hesitated had it not been for the fact that for some inexplicable reason Lexus specifically says to ground the battery connection where battery is charged on car and I know hybrid electrics are different in some respects. I can only think that perhaps it might be because some owners might connect a very high powered charger to the electrical system but then again as you point out, the car can be jump started from the location under the hood, very strange! Understand your disclaimer and will connect direct to battery as I have done with non hybrid cars. I don't envisage a problem but should there be one I will post so others may be aware.

  15. It is a problem with the Toyota Europe servers relating to traffic update information. Toyota are aware, but the issue may not be resolved for a while due to reduced IT guys re COVID-19. We are getting the same problem, it is being discussed on the Corolla owner's forum.

  16. When i bought the 430 it had huge 4" tail pipes and a stainless Powerflow exhaust that gave it a nice V8 burble but too loud for me and droned under acceleration and motorway allot. My exhaust shop said it was due to them using round back boxes (not sure why) but i guess its how the gases circulate. What he did was cut the back surface out of both of the exhaust boxs where the tailpipe goes in, insert a length of pipe (not sure of length) into the box and re-weld up putting 3" tailpipes on. This quitened it down enough and stopped the droning. I have no idea why this works but it does and its cured the droning and just has lovely V8 burble to go with the Lexus prestige looks

  17. Thanks Paul, I have now ordered the 2 sets of clips from the links you kindly provided, they both said delivery by Monday but with the present situation they arrive when they do. I have another 10 weeks on the present standby rota so plenty of time to do the job. Looking at the box of 500 I will have enough for my lifetime and several generations to follow so if anyone needs a clip or hundred around Derbyshire please let me know and I will be glad to provide FOC if collected.

  18. I use and recommend the Heyner "Digimatic Portable 12V Compressor" from www.heynershop.co.uk. It's a quality German product. I paid £35. Far superior to my previous Ring compressor which broke, was replaced, then the replacement broke. I've just checked the Heynershop website and it seems that particular model is not available, but I can vouch for the quality of Heyner products.

  20. My hearing is pretty crap but my wife tells me that there is little to no drone. Checking back in the invoice the Powerflow guys used wider bore connecting pipes and then scaled down as required. I am presuming that this was they way they eliminated the drone.

  21. Hi Howard, I’ve just re done my wheels, I did do them months ago but they were just as bad. I’ve now applied the C5 stuff. I did the just front wheels a few weeks ago and the dirt and brake dust comes off a hell of a lot easier but was still on the wheels in the hard to get to places and a pain to clean off. Autofinesse Iron Out with a brush to agitate did the trick though so the combination of wheels cleaned and coated with C5 then using Iron Out or something similar after works really well for my wheels. I only started using the Gtechniq stuff after I had a new M140i ceramic coated with their stuff and just stuck with it.

  24. No doubt it's largely down to age (although some younger people are attracted) but I like to listen to songs/music mainly pre 1980 when songs had a good melody, were clearly annunciated and not just a noise! Here is one by Matt Monroe, regarded by many as good as if not better than Sinatra and possibly the best male singer of his genre that England has produced. Llisten to perfect pitch, tone and clarity. Nice scenery and the Muira From 'The Italian Job.'

  26. Sometimes i long back to the days where cars had no clock, without 8 buttons on the steeringwheel, without suspension or throttle settings without sport eco + or ++ without enfuriating satnavs, heated seats that dont really work, auto wipers that always are too fast or slow, 10 speed autoboxes that keep gearhunting , wheels that are so big comfort is not included. And So On. Just give me a good car without all of this with a setting designed by the engineers and without a 300 page manual. Maybe i am getting too old and should just get a modern classic from the nineties?

  27. Hello Jonathan, whilst my own RX is thus far dry my daughter who has a 2007 Honda Jazz has water ingress problems in the boot. Youtube pointed out the weld seams as the likely culprit. I sprayed on some sealant around the seams but she still has the problm. I noticed the issue raised in Honest John.He referred to a cabin vent flap? I havent seen her car but perhaps most cars have such a feature. I took a snapshot of the letter and am enclosing it. Just a thought? I'm very sympathetic to your cause, it would drive me crazier than 3 weeks isolation....

  29. Alloys are not easy to keep clean and ‘like new’ in general. Lexus alloy wheels suffer from corrosion more than most and I was fortunate to get a recently refurbished set with my car which I thoroughly cleaned with Farecla G3 to remove any trace of tar and anything else. I then coated them with Gtechniq C5 wheel armour, all set now I thought and just need to clean them properly when washing the car using a wheel brush etc. After a few months it became apparent that just cleaning them as described above was not enough. I have used Iron-X in the past and it was good stuff but I used a bottle of Auto Finnesse Iron Out on my alloys today to try it. This stuff worked brilliantly and brought the wheels back to ‘as new’, like they were when I first fettled them with G3 etc a few moths ago. For anyone that doesn’t know how this type of stuff works, you spray it on, leave it for a while, agitate it if needed and the colour changes to purple on contact with contaminants, iron etc.hence the name. I used this stuff yesterday on my son in laws car paintwork ( on his suggestion ) before clay barring, to highlight and remove as many contaminants as possible, it worked great. Clay barring after was a breeze so I thought I’d wash my car, spray this stuff on one of the front wings (whole car had been clay barred and buffed months ago) to see if it highlighted anything I’d missed and also spray on the alloys wheels. The wing didn’t highlight anything but the alloys did, which I fully expected. I agitated the stuff on the alloys with a small brush and rinsed off. The results were pretty amazing really as shown below.

  30. My next-door neighbour is 91 and the best he could do was over £1,000 even though he's never had an accident or claimed on a policy. The insurance companies price these things because they can.

  34. flushed with the success of the boot I then started on the rear footwells, I had also bought a pair of doorstep lights as well online, time to wire it all up. The power feed was the front footwell lights that sit under the dashboard, the lights will then react when the doors are open. the LED lights were placed on the rear of the front seat frames, it was one of the few places I could get the lights to adhere to, I measured back to the powered and made a loom to run back to the power supply. the illuminated door steps were added The inner door sets cover removed and the wiring routed along the current wiring loom up to the power supply. all the work on this I have pictured is on the drivers side, its a more difficult side to dismantle. there are two screws, one on each side, holding the trim panel in place, undo those and then pull the trim panel Ive collected all the wiring under the dash and terminated it into a female connector the passenger side is a lot easier, there are no screws holding the trim panel. so with it all put back together, the finished article. really pleased with the results, the back of the car lights up so much better now.
