Now I am a cynical old s*d, and have a few number of friends in NHS (both high up in management, and down on the shop floor), and before I was laid up in hospital we all were saying, 'stuff the clap", what the NHS needs is to stop being starved of cash/resource. Anyway while in hospital recovering from Covid-19 and heart attack several of the nurses said that they were really touched by the clapping. As there is little industrial noise, one said she was over 1 mile from the centre of Gloucester and she could hear it clearly. So old cynic converted, and totally stand behind the work the doctors, nurses, cleaners and so on are doing. So having been told to take it easy by the nurses, I am nearly ready to go see how my LS is doing, as it has been sat idle for 6 weeks, so will probably need to whip battery out and re-charge. Am looking forward to when I can have enough energy to do some of the smaller jobs, as I am likely to only be working part time once work re-opens. Sure as heck looking forward at some point in about 2 months to be taking the beast for a drive.

  2. As stated many times buy a Ctek MXS 5.0. Ctek make the best battery conditioners bar none. The 5.0 refers to 5 amps, you can buy 7.0, 10.0 amp versions but all will do what you want. Ctek has now produced a traffic light dongle which connects via cables with eyelets and gives an instant indication of battery condition. the 3 led lights flash separately dependent on actual battery strength, so green flash = OK, amber = get ready for a charge soon and red = needs charging. Bought for £12 on E Bay and is a genuine Ctek accessory.

  3. I liked the E-type hearse in "Harold & Maude". I like the Lagonda estate conversions. Yes I know they are a money pit, but I love the look and I fit in them. If only the coachbuilders could continue the door/window line it would look so much better. If I win the Lottery I could create an AM Lagonda Estate with a supercharged 3UZ.

  4. Any car warranty is like insurance. You pay for car insurance, house insurance and others, but yet you hope to never have to use them, and this is no different. Great reliability, but also very complex and expensive to repair if needed, so I'd say yes.

Gentlemen, can I refer you to a much earlier post i made, something like Catastrophic Loss of Power Steering Fluid ......... quite a while back whilst all seems fine in this front for you right now, there's a niggle emerging in my mind that you might have forgotten about the pas cooling pipes that run in front of the radiator and the conglomeration of mild steel pipework ( that rusted through for me ) and all that I replaced ( had replaced that is ) in copper tubing and the appropriate flexi hoses having had to have my car trailered down to my indy for surgery at the time not too expensive but amazingly inconvenient as it's something one doesn't expect to just " go " ............. but after a qtr of a century, well, much is possible Malc

  6. Everything is back together but I noticed some rust areas on the passenger rear inner arch. Not much to begin with, just a very small area where the under seal had failed and I could see a bit of rust. So jacked up the car, took the wheel off again and started scraping which revealed a larger area, not a surprise to be honest. Scraped and wire brushed to reveal the affected area, pic below, then treated as normal. I will look at both rear inner arches properly at the weekend and find as many other bits as possible, treat them and then spray on some fresh under seal. The ‘problem’ area after using aluminium mesh, epoxy and painted. It’s not smooth but it’s rock solid and after I coat it with under seal it will be fine and look better.

  9. Of all the cars I ever owned my 2015 LS460 SE L gave me the most pleasure when I would show off the engine bay and surprise onlookers as to how neat and tidy Lexus made the engine bay area. I am freakish about clean engine bays and when I first encountered the under bonnet look of the LS I was so pleased. Talk about 2 minutes with a quick detailing spray and the job was done. I now have a new ES300h and there is no comparison of course, so much exposed pipework where dirt gathers, it takes me an age to clean. I really miss the LS but things move on and I think the ES hybrid is so good. I never did have the courage to consider the LS600h only because my knowledge of hybrids was zero back in 2015 when I was looking for a LS.

In my simple view, the party that decided the way to save the country was to make sure the bankers who ruined the country needed more Lambos and Bentleys while the people who underpin life in the UK could all have a pay cut and sign up for food banks, was eventually going to some unstuck, but was not expecting a pandemic to be the trigger. While in hospital, had a lot of time to listen to Radio 4 and World Service, quite a few economists saying the Thatcher/Regan model of selfish capitalism is likely to be a victim of Covid-19, we shall have to wait and see if our 'leaders' show compassion when this is all over, or will they tax the heck out of the lower classes to pay for generosity being handed out to the luckier ones (I am going to be furloughed, so feel like one of the lucky ones). The one thing all my friends who work in the NHS agree on, is too many managers not pulling their weight, so need to make sure we throw money a the right parts, but like any big system the incompetents and sheer naffing lazy will find broom cupboards to hide in. We can only hope that the government takes a different tack, and that the spoon faced skin-head Dominic Cummings is marginalised. 'Political rant over'. As you may tell, I am getting better (though I would struggle to throw an MP over a wall onto a quiet motorway!!!!)

  14. With your mileage I'd certainly say yes. Especially with the inclusion of the breakdown cover. There's £250+ worth of cover there and if it's the same as my Lexus cover it's for you and not the car plus a partner for free.

  15. There are many who will say Lexus never go wrong and the extended warranty is a waste of money - but - any car can have a problem no matter what the brand. The extended warranty is peace of mind that if/when anything requires attention you are most likely covered and won't have to suddenly find the money from your own bank account. Whether you will come out on top or behind is probably immaterial - it really is a peace of mind decision. For me, I have a 2014 IS 300h I purchased when it was 2 years with 40k miles on it. I took the extended warranty when the manufacturers warranty expired. In the first two years the washer bottle sensor had to be replaced - cost was around £400 but was covered under extended warranty (if I had to pay myself may not have bothered replacing it). I then extended the warranty again after those two years and just after that needed both front wheel bearing replacing which was again covered under the extended warranty (didn't get an estimate on what that would have cost). Given that the extended warranty also includes the breakdown cover (and now MoTs too I think) I am in at least a break-even situation but even if I had never claimed I would have been happy with my decision. As others said you have to have the car serviced by Lexus for the extended warranty but can use the Essential Servicing when over 5 years old.

  17. Mornin' Paul, - and welcome back to the fold! I found myself in a similar situation to you last August - when I bought a 2014 version of your motor, - and I DID buy the extended warranty from Lexus. I'd arrived at that decision having read many pages on the subject on this very forum, where I'd arrived at the conclusion that the majority of opinion was that the warranty was a worthwhile purchase. It is, of course, only a form of insurance policy, and we can always debate whether any form of insurance is a 'value for money' purchase - (it IS you one needs it, and ISN'T if one doesn't of course). However, I also purchased a two year Lexus Service package - I liked the peace of mind that gave me - ( my days of scrabbling around under cars doing my own servicing are well over ) - and with a well made vehicle - I want quality maintenance (ships and ha'porth of tar etc) I would also suggest that with your annual mileage being at least double the average, then there is a greater arguement for an extended warranty. And just to justify my own decision - I promised myself to buy just one bottle of reasonable wine LESS per week (£10 bottle) - that way both the car and I would stay healthier!

  18. Sorry, no idea on the tube diameter. I recently had my Y-pipe rebuilt by Pipecraft in Basildon for £150. They did a good job and it looks and sounds great. The secondary CAT end is stainless, so not sure if the rest of the Y-pipe is or not. My old one certainly didn't have any rust on it (unlike the silencers), just a big crack in the flange that joined the left side to the left Primary CAT. He did say that he could have just welded the crack, but in his experience they just crack again in 6-12 months.

  19. If you want peace of mind and a lot of other things too then go for it. You must have the Lexus serviced by Lexus. Do a search on Extended Warranty and find out what you need to know. Good luck.

  22. Epoxy has now had another coat applied, dried and smoothed out a bit............ It’s not perfectly smooth but it’s a solid/waterproof repair and will last a long time. Someone looking at the repair will maybe think its a bodge job and has just had some slap applied all over but I know what work has gone into it and I’m happy it’s been done right ( and the other repairs ) Maybe not as good as welding in a metal plate but pretty close if not ( it would have needed sealant etc at the bottom edge anyway though) but I’m 100% it’s structurally sound and has ‘stopped the rot’, pardon the pun. I’ve sprayed it all now with anti chip paint and will maybe give it coating of under seal or do the whole wheel arch/s. While the cill covers are off and therefore I can get to the fixing holes along the bottom, I emptied a few cans of cavity wax into the cills via these holes giving plenty of attention to the rear where the holes were. The cills themselves are totally solid but the rear ‘end plates’ ( for want of a better expression ) were the bits that needed attention and inside the cill in this area there was some surface rust that was treated but nothing to worry about at all really. Different story maybe if it had been left for another year or two. Ive already put back the cill covers etc back on the drivers side and will do the passenger side today then a really good wash of the whole car. The cill fixings I bought from eBay (twice cos I lost the first lot!) fit perfectly so they were well worth it. I’ll take a some pics later and post them.

  24. Got my renewal from FJ today. With all the current bad stuff happening, plus the issue with Lexus/Toyota hybrids and cat thefts, I was expecting a rise and to have to search for something new. Not easy with five cars to consider. But, the all-in cost came through at less than £660! The first benefit to me turning 50?........ Policy is with Ageas again, which I'm happy about.

  25. I find it extremely therapeutic. I'm not exaggerating when I say my 2JZ looked much like your 1UZ. I covered the battery and sprayed with this. Left it a couple of minutes, started the engine and rinsed with a spray from the hosepipe. Left it running for a few minutes to heat up then turned off and sprayed with this. From the AG website "Vinyl & Rubber Care is also excellent at transforming your engine. After cleaning with Engine & Machine Cleaner, spray over a wet engine and leave to dry." Results Apart from a quick wipe over after a service I have never cleaned under the bonnet before.

  26. On the 12 March, we went over to Scotland (from Holland) to spend a couple of weeks with friends and family. On the 19th I received a text from the ferry company saying 'The last ferry from Newcastle to Amsterdam leaves on the 21st - do you want to be on it?' The answer was 'Yes' and we cut our visit short. Before we left, realising we'd be in lockdown for a while, I made a trip to Halfords to get some materials to clean and shine the Lexus. These are what I bought: Over last weekend I set to work. I had never used a clay mitt before and was amazed how easy it was - and how effective. The headlight restorer worked well, also. The headlights weren't bad, but there was the odd scratch and a bit of discolouration in the corners. The kit is easy to use and comes complete with everything you need. After polishing, I applied the extra gloss protection. I'm very pleased with the result, see what you think: I need to get the alloys refurbished.....but that can wait. Next weekend, I'll do the interior.

  27. Today I changed the spark plugs, which all went according to plan. I also decided to change the power steering fluid, which was dark brown, so presumably is 24 years old. It's the one on the right!: I followed the procedure shown in this link: http://www.lexls.com/tutorials/steering/psflush.html This is my setup, which worked well enough: The low pressure return hose is 10mm internal diameter, if you want to try it. Unfortunately, what I didn't realise was that when I briefly started the car the bottom end of the hose extension would flail around under the car and not stay in the jug I used, so it made a bit of a mess. That aside, after that brief burst and with the engine off the fluid continued to drain out, albeit very slowly. All I had to do was keep topping up the reservoir, eventually using about 2 litres. However, after an hour or so I got bored, so reverted to the usual method of using a turkey baster to empty the reservoir, as much as I could anyway, and refilling with clean fluid, doing that several times. The neck of the reservoir is quite narrow, so I could only empty the reservoir to about halfway each time. Anyway, the job is done now, and the fluid looks much more like it is supposed to, and in all I used about 3 litres, but then the fluid was particularly mucky.

  28. I agree, easiest way to get revenue from those who use the roads the most. The system is already in place as VAT is charged and processed on fuel. If that ridiculous VED cost comes in for cars like ours I'll just SORN it and use it for one month night and day so I burn my years fuel in one month of continuous driving.

  31. Chances are if the battery was left, just charging for 24 hrs won’t revive it. Must ask the obvious question have you used fresh petrol ? The clicking noise is indicative of no battery power.

  32. Cylinder 2 has over 50 missfires so that's the one i'll concentrate on. Just waiting now for the OBD cable to turn up so I can read any stored codes, the guy that did the original check for me didn't show me the fault code list. Thanks to everyone that has posted on this thread so far.

  33. The problem area has now been started. Rather than get a plate welded in, which I would if I could, I decided to take the advice of using epoxy and aluminium mesh. The area has already been prepared and rust treated etc, so aluminium mesh was cut to size and shaped, holes drilled in the wheel arch ready for stainless self tapping screws to hold the mesh in place, epoxy applied to relevant areas, mesh attached and fixed with stainless screws, more epoxy applied over the whole area to form a thin film over the area. Waiting for it all to set/cure and then more epoxy over the whole area to create thick coverage. Maybe another depending on how it goes. Then a spray of anti chip paint and some under body coating of some sort.

  35. Re the query ,'will the car be easier to steal' The alarm 'security' system still works as normal, flashiing led etc. This is switched on by the door key as well as the remote. I did disconnect the 'remote off' switch left of steering wheel, so I don't know if this would have caused a problem if left switched on. The remote uses the same electrical arrangement as operating the door key 'but remotely' There is provision to flash the indicators also by the remote, haven't looked at this yet.

  37. Glad yer on the road to recovery Pete 🙂 The NHS staff, and those doing risky essential work deserve that applause. They also deserve better funding. I find it a little hypocritical that people are applauding now, but in our recent election those same people once again voted in the Party of Austerity. The party who have cut the NHS to pieces since they got in power in 2010.
