  1. I agree, the only political topics to be discussed on the LOC should be right wing, left wing and the bonnet in the centre. As such I have locked this post.

  2. whatever the pros and cons of politics and how we are where we are today should NOT in my view be a part of the LOC Forum Politics is always, and will continue to be totally divisive and cause unfriendliness ............. even here ..... even with quiet unndertones so if this doesn't stop then I'm going to be outta here ๐Ÿ˜ฒ Malc

  3. I've used paints4u.com many times in the past including for Lexus, Jaguar, Landrover, and Rover. They've always been very good colour matches in my experience.

  7. All fixed now, fitted a new coil pack and spark plug and it runs like a dream, wasn't an original denso coil pack but will try and get one of those as a spare. Luckily I took a snap of the diagnostics otherwise those guys would have been swapping out the rear packs.

  8. My Ctek MSX 5.0 has charged my ES300h a few times in the last few weeks and there have been no issues regarding auxiliary electrics while driving to the supermarket once a week. As BoutTime says Ctek chargers are smart and monitor what the battery's state is before deciding what it needs to do to get the battery fully charged. The old type chargers could easily fry a battery if just left on charge constantly whereas once a Ctek charged battery has reached full charge the machine knows not to keep charging and lights up the green fully charged LED, number 7 on the display. Moreover Lexus UK customer relations replied to me when I asked about using smart chargers on Hybrids and they said it was ok to used trickle chargers while cars are spending more time sitting around and not being used so much. They even sent out an email to registered Lexus owners advising the method to make sure your car's electrics are ready to go by saying turn on the car with the green ready light lit and the hybrid battery will top up your 12 volt battery. The engine may fire up but this is ok and it will cut in and out while charging the 12 volt battery. The only issue is the car needs to be in the ready mode for around 60 mins. I would rather use my Ctek just to save time and not have the engine cutting in and out.

  9. The maximum charge rate on AGM batteries is related to the recombination capability of the battery before gassing occurs and consequent loss of electrolyte. This only occurs in overcharge when charged from "dumb" constant current chargers. The CTEK will be perfectly fine and will not damage the battery. I know this sounds a bit trite but I am an expert on this subject as our firm makes the Varley race car batteries. www.dmstech.co.uk

  11. I don't know specifically for these battery cells, but in most cases if the cells start to swell at ALL they are bad and in the worst cases can be dangerous. I know I have a bad cell that did the same, I've actually got all the cells from the original battery sitting in 2 boxes next to me at the moment and one shows signs of swelling like that. From what I understand, balancing the cells is unlikely to do more than buy you another few months before the error pops up again at best. Really you will want to get it fully reconditioned and each cell will need a full deep charge/discharge cycle before you have any real idea if any of the cells are good or bad. I'd strongly recommend Hybrid battery solutions: http://www.hybridbatterysolutions.co.uk/ He'll be able to give you far more expert advice than anyone here.

  12. Herbs, you are an absolute GEM๐Ÿ‘ The last line in your last post solved it. I now have the full set of icons and so will now give the conversions a go. A million thanks. Thanks too to ColinBarber and OldTrout for the help offered, as always it's very much appreciated.

  14. As a bits car, maybe. You would need to store them, sell them post them, then get rid of the remaining skeleton. Work out what you might make, plus a labour charge of Xhours work. Is it worth it? Some cars like a classic Mini might be recoverable, but not a big Lexus. The key to buying here is, is to buy the best you can afford, not a scuffy one and 'hope to do it up'. That is a money pit.

  15. Hi Phil I've used epoxy adhesives before but never thought of using it for large areas etc, first thing that comes to mind is fibreglass, it works a treat and it really is rock solid. Thew fibreglass I removed was like straw and just pulled away very easily. I didn't know what to buy so I looked around a bit on the internet and decided to get 2 x tubes of 'West System Six10 Thickened Epoxy Adhesive' and is used in the marine industry I think, my thought was that it would be thicker for the vertical surfaces and not run as much. It is thick though and not exactly cheap but for my purpose it was ideal I think. I didn't get it smooth but I should have read the instructions better as I think it 'thins' the more you work it. Fixing the aluminium mesh in place with stainless self tappers and then epoxy resin over the whole area, as you suggested, resulted in a very strong repair. Maybe just as good or maybe better than welding in a steel plate in this particular area, it would have been difficult welding the bottom of the plate to the cill so I would have needed to use some kind of sealant in the area anyway I think. Also welding in one particular area further up the wheel arch could have resulted in the exterior paintwork, which isn't covered by a trim panel, bubbling which I didn't want at all. Now all the cill covers and mudguards are back in place, most of the repaired area is covered and it looks fine. The worst side is more visible but even then you wouldn't notice unless purposely looked. Thanks again, it was good advice!!

  16. Climate control, heated seats and radio - well, you wouldn't want to leave your ambience up to the chauffeur, would you? (Quick reality check - this is the Lexus GS forum - you haven't wandered into the Bentley forum! ๐Ÿ˜Š) (The controls are a feature of Gen 4 GS models)

  17. In my simple view, the party that decided the way to save the country was to make sure the bankers who ruined the country needed more Lambos and Bentleys while the people who underpin life in the UK could all have a pay cut and sign up for food banks, was eventually going to some unstuck, but was not expecting a pandemic to be the trigger. While in hospital, had a lot of time to listen to Radio 4 and World Service, quite a few economists saying the Thatcher/Regan model of selfish capitalism is likely to be a victim of Covid-19, we shall have to wait and see if our 'leaders' show compassion when this is all over, or will they tax the heck out of the lower classes to pay for generosity being handed out to the luckier ones (I am going to be furloughed, so feel like one of the lucky ones). The one thing all my friends who work in the NHS agree on, is too many managers not pulling their weight, so need to make sure we throw money a the right parts, but like any big system the incompetents and sheer naffing lazy will find broom cupboards to hide in. We can only hope that the government takes a different tack, and that the spoon faced skin-head Dominic Cummings is marginalised. 'Political rant over'. As you may tell, I am getting better (though I would struggle to throw an MP over a wall onto a quiet motorway!!!!)

  20. Not sure if the GS is the same but the LS needs to have the key inserted and turned to the ignition position for around 8 minutes then removed and reinserted to reset the immobiliser. Generally the car will happily crank over fine but the engine will not fire, another indication is the red security light remains on after inserting the key.

  22. Here are the relevant pages of the tech document, there is overlap... and I'm not certain of the precise order, but it's all there - there are two parts - one for cars with the GPF (gas particulate filter) and one for cars without it. Essentially they're not a lot different and I don't think the 300h has the GPF... (anyone?) Hope they help. Steve
