  1. It’s alright for you LS owners but ltry running a 2006 RX350. This year, additional to servicing it cost me £10 for new positive battery terminal cover, after only 14 years! OK, I’ll get back to the RX forum now, just wanted you to know how costly Lexus SUV's can get as they reach middle age.....

  2. Just put my 2000 Mk4 through its Mot,yesterday, I had an advisory on a slightly worn rear tyre. Last year I had an advisory on a defective reversing light bulb. It's just one thing after another with these Lexus cars!

  3. (Hi Phil!). Grove Garage in Brighton are still Toyota/Lexus specialists, and Leigh the owner rates Japanese cars more highly than German ones (including prestige brands). But they work on all types of cars. Leigh changed the cambelt on my LS400 a few years ago.

  4. Just had a thought. Get all the Top Gear crew who dissed the Ls 400 at the time back to the Nurburgring track with 20 year old equivalent Beemers,Mercs et al and an Ls 400 and see which performs best after 20 laps. I know which one I would put my money on!

  9. I'm interested in Fuel Cell and Battery cars and have driven both (Tesla Model S and a Honda Clarity), but nothing on the market really interests me yet, at least not in a price bracket I would consider. The Clarity I drove was a nice car. It felt like an Accord with better acceleration and LS levels of quiet. The Tesla was impressive w.r.t. power but handling was heavy and build quality was not up to Honda/Lexus levels, but did have LS level quiet. Hydrogen still has storage issues which effectively limits range, but does have the advantage over Battery of a 3 minute refill. There are also issues w.r.t. safety, but those can be mitigated and really are no worse than petrol cars. Battery cars are currently quite heavy (at least if they have a decent range) so the Fuel Cells have the advantage there as well. However, you can recharge your Battery car at home where Fuel Cell still ties you to Fuel Stations. Either way, neither of these are as "clean" as some people like to believe. The cost of manufacture is currently very high for both Battery and Fuel Cell and the environmental damage is also high, especially when you consider that the energy used to charge the batteries or to produce the Hydrogen is very much not clean. Are they better for the environment over their lifetime than petrol/diesel/hybrid cars, yes, but not as much as their marketing would like you to believe. At between 3-5 years is where the cost of manufacture is offset by the greener energy use compared to an equivalent Petrol/Diesel but that rises to 5-8 years compared to equivalent Hybrids. If you are choosing between a new Battery/Fuel Cell car and a new Petrol/Diesel/Hybrid car, then given similar cost the former will be cleaner but more limited. If you are in the used car market, then the greenest options for most of us will be Hybrids. Soon we will start seeing high mileage Battery cars at more reasonable prices and they may be a good buy, but I guess that depends on the Battery and drive-train reliability. If Germany has decided to go down the Hydrogen route, then good for them. I look forward to seeing more choices of Fuel Cell cars, and maybe once they become available, the infrastructure will follow here in the UK. Whichever route we go down, we will all need to invest in a shed-load of electricity generation capability in the next 10-15 years.

  10. How much? Am I missing something here? £30,500 for a 13 year old left hand drive 4x4 with 103,000 miles? Does it have a secret stash of gold hidden somewhere inside?

  13. I had a fault where my stereo head didn't seem to work, the process self tests the connection between major switches and your touch screen operation. It showed my head unit as n/conn which I interpreted as no connection, took the full centre consul display out and the fault was with the in car bluetooth kit which uses the stereo heads cabling to iterupt the music being played when a call comes in, but does not stop the CD playing in the background without sound. If you are experiencing similar problems it may be worth trying? It shows if there are any faults stored in the ECU Try the diagnostics menu and see what faults come up... (the following is for UK spec but I think they are very similar) Lets hope nothing! To access the Diagnostic Menu on the touch screen do the following. 1. Gear selector in park. 2. Handbrake on. 3. Ignition to ACC, (or start the engine if you want to do a speed check etc) wait for navi screen to power up, click "I Agree" (or buy the Vias Ipod or dvd lead and it does it for you) 4. Press and HOLD the OPTION button and AT THE SAME TIME... 5. Turn headlights from off to sidelights five times i.e. off/side/off/side/off. 6. To exit the menu, turn off the ignition, car will then behave as normal. You will then get a screen displayed, it shows if there are any faults stored in the ECU, you must wait until it populates the empty spaces. I got this from Club lexus forums from a Lexusthai he shows pictures of all the screens you will see, but I repeat, you must wait until it populates the empty spaces. I hope this can help others Rich

  17. Thanks, I did have a good look at the rear parcel speaker not long after buying it as the guy who does some of my car electrics was going to upgrade it. They are the green coloured speakers that were by all accounts a later spec (hope I've got that right)

  18. All good points I suppose. I guess the best advice to the buyer would be to ask the seller to get the wrap professionally removed to allow inspection... hopefully to unveil a gleaming and spotless bodywork belying the age of the car.

  24. That is always going to be an issue as all non-fossil fuels require energy to be created and are not as calorific as just pulling oil out of the ground and refining it, not so sure a world covered in wind farms and/or solar panels is one that would be pleasing, and in this country the local authority would not allow me to put panels all over a 250 year old house. An interesting challenge, with no easy answers if we all want to travel (by bus/train/car) more and more, not forgetting planes.

  28. seems to me that simple refuelling at a normal " petrol " station is best for me as I have absolutely nowhere at home to recharge any electric car .. no car parking at home and no street lamp that the council or anybody might make into an electric charging point that me and my dozens of neighbours wouyld be able to use Reality will set in for Govts and the EV brigade ............... there are probably tens of millions of car owners in the UK like me where a simple fill-up at a " petrol " station will be the only way to go.......................well, that's unless we all Q up at the supermnarket car parks to recharge Malc

  30. I agree, but I think the type of individual interested in paying the type of figure required, probably gets his pleasure showboating and sitting in a car show somewhere. Remember you are talking history and nostalgia, and for quite a few people with money and time that is their life. For you, I and many more the joy is in the driving, but glad we are all not the same.

  34. Just blown £929 into my wife's 2015 fiat 500 with 17000 miles. MOT, major service with cambelt change (required after 4years). Oh there was an advisory on front tyres so I decided to fit Michelin Cross Climates all round which accounted for £360. My last 2015 RX450h cost £695 for the big 60000 service. Funny how all cars these days seem to cost similar amounts to maintain

  35. Indeed. A low miles car can be neglected/abused, and a high-miler honest and well-maintained. Before my current RX I had a 14-reg model with relatively low mileage (30-odd thousand from memory), but that had some issues with damage to the underside from a less-than-careful previous owner. The dealer wouldn't fix it so I exchanged it for what I have now.

  43. It depends on usage I have a limited driving requirement these days and only ever got into this Marque because I was doing a lot of Motorway stuff back in the 90s 500 mile round trip every weekend to my yacht in Scotland for six years. I bought the Mark 4 knowing I would only be doing 6k a year tops as the yachting became history but I had fallen in love with these cars and I could'nt see anything that surpassed them ,I only use it lightly now but I have put more miles on it as the first two owners did in 13 years so it is getting used as a runabout with a couple of motorway splurges to Devon when we can. I think use is down to the individual and I go out on my bike for errands as nipping here and there is not good for the engine. Where you park and areas you would not leave the car unattended need careful consideration but generally these are highly respected motors and turn heads of knowledgeable folk. But the ultimate pleasure of owning them is the sheer pleasure they give when being driven the rest is just a bonus.

  44. I agree that raising the oil level buy what will be an amount almost unmeasurable on the dipstick will have no impact what so ever on the engine oil pressure. If there were any increase "which there will not be" the oil pressure release valve will adjust the pressure accordingly. The overfill of 200ml represents a 3% of capacity, and is probably a smaller measurement than the difference in sump capacity along with dipstick tolerance in production. As you correctly state over filling in exstream circumstances can lead to oil foaming, and this in turn can lead to a reduction in oil pressure. To put the OP's mind at rest the amount of overfill in this case is insignificant. John.

  45. I agree with Malc, it's best done by someone who has done it before. I've recently bought a Gates kit for mine, belt, idler, tensioner and water pump for £180. I'm having mine done on the 12th by someone who has done them before (and for some reason enjoys doing them) all for £150 labour. Not doing the pump is false economy as a failed pump can take out the belt, and the engine with it. eBay seller called carpartsinmotion, delivered within 18 hours!

  46. Many thanks for this explanation. That makes things clearer. I had assumed that the vent pipe was in continuous use but I now get the impression that it's mainly there for safety in extreme situations. I found the following quote from a Canadian university: "In VRLA (valve regulated lead acid) batteries (of which AGM is one type), any hydrogen and oxygen produced during charging does not escape but is converted back into water. Gas can only escape when internal pressure exceeds the rating of the pressure valve. Therefore, VRLA batteries are much less likely to release hydrogen than vented batteries. A vented battery can give off sixty times more gas than a VRLA battery in normal use." And later it says, "they release little or no gas until the battery is recharged to approximately 80% of its capacity". In fact, when I've been leaving the car in Ready state to keep the battery topped up, I've noticed that the charging voltage is adjusted according to conditions. It starts charging at 13.9v, presumably until sensors have reported the outside and battery temperatures. It then raises the voltage to 14.4v for a while. But if the outside temperature is above around 25C, it quickly reduces to 14.3v or 14.1v. This is presumably because, from what I've read, AGM batteries don't like too rapid a charge when outside temperatures are higher. And, of course, the rate of charge is reduced (as I think Britprius has mentioned elsewhere) when it reaches 80%. So it's all very cleverly designed and seems to be specifically set up for an AGM battery.

  47. DanD said "It may be worth contacting your internet provider first: some will provide WiFi boosters for free. Virgin Media certainly do. I recently got some from them - at their suggestion - and they came by courier within two days" Thank you for your suggestion DanD, phoned Sky this morning, free booster should be with me by Wednesday. Brilliant! Thanks to all for your input.
