  1. Update on the car. All the rear arches and lips have now been treated with Hydrate 80 a couple of times, left to dry and then painted with Por-15 paint. It's all ready for the next dry weekend to be sprayed with Dynax UB/UC and then Dynax S50 sprayed into the sills. As a follow on from this I thought I'd share what I think about the 'rusty sill' issue that seems to affect a fair number of IS200's and I assume IS300's as well. Maybe everyone knows all about this issue/what to look for and I'm telling you how to suck eggs but what the heck. Before I purchased this IS200 I did a lot of research into the rear arch/sill rust issue. I have an LS400 which suffered with a similar issue and this prompted me to look into it. I searched forums, including this one, the web and anything else I could think of to gather as much information on the symptoms, what causes it and what the implications are if this issue exists. I watched a few YouTube videos on fixing the issue (links below if you are interested), one not so bad and another that was pretty pretty bad. I couldn't really find much info on what causes it but I have my own idea/s after watching the videos. After all that I decided I wouldn't consider an IS200 with any signs of bubbling in the problem area. I was assured that this car had no signs of bubbling and when I got to the car I checked myself, as documented above. Symptoms: Water gets into the sill and rusts from the inside out apparently so once there is bubbling showing on the outside surface it's already eating through the sill. Example pics I found. The first shows the bubbling and the second is an example of how bad it can get in the rear arches (similar to my LS400 but not as bad) The big question is, how does the water get into the sill in the first place? From my experience on the LS400, I think the bottom of the inner arches and up the sides of the rear inner wing get packed with dirt and mud etc (the plastic covers and shape of the metal contribute to holding it in place). If these areas are not cleaned out regularly, rust appears, eventually rots through into the sill area and water gets into the sill area. Picture 2 above illustrates this. Unless you know about this, which owners of the new cars wouldn't, you wouldn't pay attention to cleaning those areas and keeping them clean so over the years things get rusted. This is what I think based on what I've read and found but please correct me if I'm wrong and there is another cause, maybe the sill itself can rot on the inner side from outside as well resulting in the same effect. 2. Let West Midlands Trading Standards know about it as I get the impression when I have spoken to them were praying that he wont change his ways and they will see him go inside.

  3. There is a speed cutoff above which the parking pawl doesn't engage even if you do press it. I've done it by mistake while at speed and it just beeped and and the car stayed in Drive Sent from my SM-N950F using Tapatalk

  5. I usually keep a boot carpet protector in my car, especially as it saves carpet from residue of plant material and miscellaneous stuff. On the one occasion I left it out because it needed cleaning and I was conveying some bedding to my daughter, some milk leaked as we collected shopping. As you doubtless know, stale milk smells pretty rank and stains, so I managed to get most of it out at the time. When back home I removed the two screws and removed the carpet which is stuck to some sort of hard board material. I could have used a stronger based cleaner but did not wish to risk activating the glue that secures it to the 'hard board' type material so used a more mild fabric cleaner and a small amount of warn water with a little drop of washing up liquid and gradually lightly soaked it and dabbed until dry, finishing with a hair dryer. Job done but one I could have done without. Although my car came with quickly removable over carpets, there was not one provided for the boot which would have helped somewhat. Anyway, the rubber liner I bought is now back in the boot and I would recommend anyone who has not got one to get one. You never know what you might have to bring home. This is the one I got which is made in Europe (probably made in eastern part such as Poland). It seems well made and fits my 3rd Gen RX450h fine. Can't remember which of several sellers I got it from but is is REZAW-PLAST as here. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/EXCLUSIVE-RUBBER-BOOT-LINER-DOG-MAT-TRAY-FOR-LEXUS-RX-450h-SUV-2009-2015/183524967789?fits=Car+Make%3ALexus&epid=2009194308&hash=item2abaf0c56d:g:opAAAOSwRK9b5ArU

  7. I was in a similar situation with keys. I learned that there are 2 length blanks available. I bought a number of old Lexus keys from Ebay. I also learned that my W Reg 2000 LS400 required the transmitter pack with triangular indent. These are readily available on Ebay... This one is currently under £20 https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2003-Lexus-gs300-is200-3-button-1512v-3-button-Remote-Key-working-part/402441486730 Once the key is cut, all that is required is the "pedal dance" outlined in many places on this forum. I managed to lock my keys in the boot last year whilst working in Scotland. After removing a wet jacket and leggings I closed the boot lid immediately realising what I'd done! I tried calling the wife and getting her to operate the spare key in Hampshire, whilst holding the phone in various places along the windscreen - no luck! The AA man spent an hour trying to access the car, and once calling a colleague for advice, took the advice and gave up. My saviour was by way of a local auto locksmith. On the Monday morning he retrieved the key code from Lexus Central (I was able to confirm it's pedigree and date of registration) He arrived in the muddy field with a blank, typed in the code to his automated key cutter and I was able to gain access to the boot and my regular key set from the wet coat. Alarms blazing. Charge was £86 which I didn't think was extortionate.

  8. Evening fellow LS'ers! Some time ago I posted about keys for the LS and if I could get a replacement remote key somehow and it's been a bit of a saga but I DID IT!! I thought you'd be interested to know and tell me I went too far to get there... lol My car came with 2 keys, the valet key and the skeleton key in the card. Unfortunately the master and remote were lost along with the service book when the last owner passed away (the car was laid up in a garage for 7 years). I initially tried local locksmiths and even the AA to try source a remote key to link up and of course they couldn't. I didn't know at this point about the receiver in the boot and the paired chip but neither did they. I managed to get a blank Lexus master key from the USA and brought it back and had it cut at a local auto locksmith. I was slightly happier at this point being able to get into the boot without the interior button. A donor car arrived for some bits and bobs I needed for my car and I was amazed that it came with a remote key and all was working; so I reached out and got some advice from (steve2006 - what a guy). I looked into if I could swap the key blade as it would leave me with one complete key. This isn't possible as the blade is set into the plastic and it would mean absolutely destroying it to even start. Coding the chip in the car to the key is also not possible and swapping all the locks etc didn't seem wise as they were iffy and worn on the donor. I tracked down the part numbers with Steve's help for the remote key sets and found both 1, 2 & 3 key sets with transponder. Lexus Chester point blank said it was very doubtful I'd get one but there was confusion about pre-cut/blank sets with a suffix to the part number and also and if the receiving chip was definitely part of the set. The dealer prices didn't seem too horrific as Amayama were looking to be several hundred before shipping and import duty. Lexus Stoke seemed to be able to supply it and at a cheaper price to Chester, so I ordered. I called 3 weeks later as I had heard nothing. They looked into it and nobody placed an order, they shouldn't have without prepayment anyway and actually they couldn't get the part (poor service). At this point I was giving up... In the end I swapped over the donor car chip into my boot and then used 2 keys for unlocking and then starting the car. I know the remote distance is pants but I wanted the car to have all it's features working and be complete! I left it for a bit longer and used the 2 keys until I went back searching on eBay. I was always searching for LS but one of the similar items was a key for a GS300 95-96 which there was a decent stock of. I compared the photo in detail and it looked identical, the dealer was kind enough to open it up and send photos and the inside also looked identical so I ordered at £130 delivered. The key arrived and I took it apart, yes it was going to work!! Started by pulling out the cover plate with brute force as it's glued in, removing the circuit board after breaking the solder link to the key blade. Mock fitted the circuit board from the donor car and everything lined up, took the blade to Timpson's for cutting which was a big mistake. Timpson's don't guarantee their work if they don't provide the key. I stressed to the guy to make sure he thought he could do it and he said he could, he couldn't and he cut straight through the blade... £130 down the drain. I remembered that when I had the master key cut the shop had a proper laser guided machine and they didn't have an issue with me supplying the key or cutting it. So I ordered another key from the USA and waited another few weeks. The local locksmith had no issue cutting the blade, the machine even read back the code from the key card after it had measured up from the key; which I find fascinating. I should have gone back here initially and have now lost trust in Timpson's antiquated machinery now. It was also half the price. Bought myself a soldering Iron and had a practice, soldered the wire connection to the key blade and put everything back together. Patted myself on the back for the fact it worked on first press!!! I have gone from a valet key and the card to a remote master, master, valet, skeleton and two generic keys I had cut from the master as emergency spares. I'm glad I kept persevering with it, some things for the LS400 are difficult to get hold of but it proves if you keep at it, you can find a solution!

  9. Well I talked about it for months then finally got round to advertising my pride and joy on autotrader and it sold to the first guy to come and have a look. Not a member on here but a nice guy called Colin setting off to Hereford. I'm sure he will enjoy the car as much as I did so give him a wave if you see him. Sad it's gone but just wasnt getting used enough as a second car. Very happy with the price I got, suffice to say private sale prices remain strong for good cars. Still fancy an RCF one day so will be hanging around here for a while. Funnily enough the daily hack doesn't do any more miles to the gallon than the ISF. Good job I dont go far.

  12. No problem, I’ve learned a lot by reading other people’s posts and info on this forum and other places so I try my best to give something back. It’s a shame that the sill rust problem can result in the car being scrapped at worst or you get rid when mechanically there isn’t much wrong. All cars have their weak points of course which don’t appear until they are many years old and Lexus isn’t immune to that. The IS200 I bought is 17 years old and the LS400 is 24 years old so all things considered they are doing pretty well, rust is the enemy rather than the mechanical bits.

  15. I think the main reason for winter or all season tyres in the uk is grip at low temperatures.. I;ve got winter tyres for my IS ... and they do make a difference.... just a pain to swap and store wheels..... cross climate seems to be the way to go as what I have seen of test results, their summer wet grip is also really good.

  18. This is true, because I believe they're designed just to get you out of trouble so maybe not a good comparison with regular use. But then how often does one get into such trouble where more grip is required? I guess that's my point.

  19. After a full service of my 94 LS400 I was after some time finally able to go to a local supermarket for some supplies. (Been off the road for over a month). I am living and working in Netherlands and without the car I have been biking where I needed to be. I did my shopping, loaded the car up and as I was pulling out of my parking space, someone just walked in front of me. I stopped, gave a little toot on the horn, which really made said person jump. He turned round and shouted (Translated from Dutch), F**king electric cars. So I opened the window and said sorry, this is a 4ltr quad cam V8 petrol engine, not electric. Made me laugh.

  21. If your commute is that short the engine will spend most of its time warming up, when injection computers richen the mixture like crazy to compensate for clumping fuel droplets that don't properly vaporise in the low temperatures of a cold engine. The UX warms up pretty quick, but even so, the first couple of miles will get terrible fuel economy. All joking aside, have you considered a bicycle...? Nick

  22. Hi Vlad, Believe it or not, the brakes have just about fixed themselves! I am getting little to no juddering now and I haven't done anything to them other than trying not to hold the brakes after a heavy stop. Now, as I mentioned in another thread, if I could just get them to stop squealing whilst driving down the motorway, I would be happy How is yours doing?

  25. I had a similar thing about the quietness when parking up and running colleagues to lunch but it was comments asking me if it was a hybrid because it was a Lexus. I think people don't realise quite how old the car is! I mean if it was a hybrid in 1993 the world would be a different place now! Sent from my SM-G975F using Tapatalk

  27. Hi Herbie. Yep, I'm just about to send that request off now. He was supposed to do an HD Video Walkaround yesterday afternoon too, but that didn't materialise, and still waiting. Not discussed price yet, but he's advertising it at £7,000 which according to AuroTrader valuation, is about £2,000 over what it's worth. We'll see how things go. I'm in no rush, and the right car at the right price will come along at some point. Cheers

  28. One comment in Timpsons, they are capable of doing a good job, but choose your Timpsons with care.. Had a colleague who used to work for them, and he said the high street stores generally have older cutting gear than the Supermarket ones. I have had 2 LS keys cut at Tesco in Stroud, no problems (even handing over just the metal stub itself). One cut at Cirencester high street was (and is) iffy, and the chap at the Sroud High Street branch said Tesco option 1 mile away was better. Sounds like some branches have gorillas doing the cutting from ajchetcuti experience!!!!

  34. A small update. The weather was a bit dodgy today so I was restricted to some interior work. It was well overdue tbh as a few recent sunny mornings had highlighted significant amounts of dust starting to accumulate. So the car was vacuumed for the first time in a while and the dashboard and other plastics etc were given a quick spruce up. The floor mats were then removed, cleaned using Autoglym Hi-Foam Shampoo before being treated with a liberal coating of Scotch Gard. My main motivation for tidying-up the interior though, was because this arrived during the week. Original... F-Sport.... Just a small change then, but one I'll notice everytime I drive the car.
