  3. A Tesla battery is over half a tonne, and thats just a car - try pulling a caravan with a EV and the range will plumment, but nobody is asking how long will my battery last if I haul stuffs, all we are told is they have a range of 200/300 odd miles but they dont say under what conditions - the condition is most likely with no AC on and plodding about at 40/50mph and towing absolutely nothing for sure give me a truck like this any day - actually got a scale model of this Mack as its so cool

  5. Just a general response on Lexus NX delivery times. I found this article when browsing the internet in a moment of boredom. 'TrueFleet' a UK lease company published a list of approximate manufacturer delivery times by vehicle model on 19th July. For lexus they show: Factory Order Lead Time (estimated and subject to change) UX Hybrid = 8-9 months UX EV = 12+ months NX Hybrid = 12+ months NX PHEV = 7-8 months ES Hybrid = 8-9 months RX = now in run-out, new orders closed RC F = 12+ months LC = 11-12 months LC Hybrid = 8-9 months LC Convertible = 12+ months LS = 15 months It is interesting to see the range of leadtimes. For the NX market segment: Audi Q3 SUV PHEV = 27-32+ weeks Audi Q5 PHEV = Estimated Q1 2023 BMW Most models = 8-10 months Volvo XC40 = 6 months (XC40 Electric = 6-9 months) Volvo XC90 PHEV = 6-9 months Jaguar E-Pace P300e = up to 6 months Jaguar F-Pace (excluding D165) = up to 6 months Jaguar I-Pace = up to 6 months The full list showing the majority of Manufacturers can be found here https://truefleet.co.uk/blog/car-van-manufacturer-vehicle-lead-time-information

But what I do have is a button on the roof near the interior mirror, as part of the moonroof/ front interior lights unit, that sets the intrusion and tilt sensor. If you set this to Off it disables the alarm system. If it’s On I wonder if it accounts for the erratic behaviour that Dan’s experiencing?

  14. Tyre topics always regress into mud slinging contests and I knew it from the beginning, the only thing I want to clarify - what I said isn't "my opinion", I rarely share my option and when I do I state it is opinion. Point understood on the skipping, and I understood it even before you clarified, I had those tyres, they had same "issue" and it is because of deep channels for aquaplaning, does not hurt the performance of the tyres even a little. I really don't understand this desire for mediocrity and sorry to say but bit of ignorance as well. I guess I need to add little bit more information when I say they are "mediocre" tyres, because this may be misunderstood. To explain it numerically - good tyres are the ones which could be expected to preform 90-100 on objective scale (something like set tests on tyre reviews), this is where most premium tyres are, 75-90, those are mediocre tyres and usually that is where you find most mid range with some exceptions and under 75, that is where budgets usually land again with exceptions. So Brigestone Turanzas are by all means are premium tyres which lands in that high quality tyres category, just maybe at the bottom of it - say 92, but there are others like Conti Premium Contacts and Goodyear Asymmetric which lands at 97-99, so they are objectively better tyres, with better grip, lower noise, better thread-life all at once... the difference isn't huge, but it is noticeable. Take for example this review, Turanzas T005 which are latest ones (older ones where even worse) are consistently mediocre, in review they even say "well Turanzas didn't even meant to compete at this level, but we included them because Brigestone for some reason sent Turanzas for UHP test (not UHP tyre), probably because they are new". What would warry me, especially in UK, is that they were extremely poor in wet. https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/2022-Tyre-Reviews-17-Inch-UHP-Summer-Tyre-Test.htm Even then they were beaten by Goodyear EffcientGrip Performance 2, which likewise is premium non-UHP tyre. https://www.tyrereviews.com/Article/2020-Tyre-Reviews-Ultimate-Summer-Tyre-Test.htm So your view isn't controversial, it just lacks nuance. Yes manufacturers absolutely spend billions on R&D and absolutely they will get many mediocre parts, some of that R&D money is spent exactly for that, to find the hose which is not the best, but just good enough, the wire which is not the best, but good enough, tyres, windscreens, paints, metal etc. No auto manufacturer aims to get "the best" into their cars - they aim for rather depressing "good enough" and Turanzas are exactly that, they are mediocre, but they are good enough. As I said specific to the tyres sometimes manufacturers go extra mile to get better than average tyres and develop one exactly for their car, but even then cost cutting is there, just not the aim #1, but maybe aim #3... so "how good we can get these tyres without braking the bank or maybe even saving the money". Likewise pricing works completely different and competition is completely different on these bulk purchases and long term contracts - when you go to market to buy tyres there are fierce competition to make best tyre, the brand names matter, the marketing matter, what sort of driver you are matter and we buying tyre on it's own merits. When manufacturers buy tyres they literally buying just rubber, as long as it meets some basic safety and performance criteria, next thing on the list is to get best price possible and they may choose Brigestone over Michelin because of 5p difference in price, but maybe because it is logistically easier to source in Japan or whatever... not that many tyres are made in Japan anyway. Long story short, what matters when you changing the tyres is not what manufacturer fitted, because they had different criteria than you and that different criteria was to fit cheapest tyres which are still safe, as you can't get the pricing they got on their order you can't even match it. Don't think that Lexus fitted Turanzas because they were developed for IS300h in particular and it makes it better - no they were cheapest and still acceptable tyre. So when I go to shop for the tyres and see Goodyear Asymmetric/EfficientGrip, Dunlop Sportmaxx RT2, or Uniroyal Rainsport 5 for £67 (225/45/R17 mail order), or even Conti Premium Contact for £79, I will buy them every time before I even consider Turanzas for £82 or Michelins for £88 - Michelins are good, but they not as good as cheaper tyres... so why overpay? Yes Turanzas in isolation aren't bad tyres, they are safe and they perform better than best tyres 10 years ago, but they don't exist in isolation - there are better tyres for cheaper and that makes them mediocre tyre and poor purchase.

I'm not sure of the practicality of overhead lines being added to existing infracture, although I guess it could work on motorways if the trucks could run independently/on batteries for the first and last legs of non motorway usage. Then there's the bridge issue mentioned by John, so perhaps they should have approached it the other way round, and got Scalextric to build the roads 😀

  19. My car history. I have owned some 27 cars over a period of 52 years including a TVR 390SE and a BMW Z3M Coupe. My last 4 cars have been quick BMW’s. I now own a 2016 Lexus RX450h and a 2004 SC430 in blue. Of all the cars I have owned the Lexus’ are my favourite cars and at this time I don’t intend to sell either of them. So on to my SC which I bought in October 2021. I saw it advertised on eBay being sold by a small motor dealer for £12600. The reason for the price was because it only had one lady owner from new and had just under 7500 miles on the clock. It had only just come on to eBay and the dealer opened the next day Sunday at 10.00am. I managed to get in first before many other callers who even offered the dealer £1000 more for it. He happened to be a friend of the family selling it and was selling it on their behalf. It has just been in Norwich Lexus to have the timing belt changed, new tyres, battery and radiator. The car ahead a private plate on it which you may see in a couple of photos which was kept by the original owner. I was over the moon buying it and I felt like it was one of those things in life that always happens to someone else. After driving it back to my home I found one of 6 x 9 door speakers was in need of a refoam. The only other thing was it had about 3 small car door dents. So this is a list of what I have done to the car so far with the view I need to be able to restore it to OEM to keep it’s value. Refoamed both front door speakers using kit bought from US via eBay Fitted SC430Mods.com Bluetooth module which works really well to stream music from iPhone and make/take calls. Using SIrI makes for a completely hand free set up. Purchased phone holder that fits to air vent from Amazon. Fitted new boot struts bought from eBay Fitted Wolfbox 12” rear view mirror front & Rear dash cam with rear camera for reversing. Bought from Amazon. However I would say it is highly reflective in strong sunlight so not very effective with the top down but the dash cams work well Machined polished paintwork and applied Gtechniq Ceramic coating. Treated all other parts of the car using Gtechniq products Wrapped all the wood trim & steering wheel with 3M Carbon Fibre Vinyl. Wrapping the trim was not to hard but the steering wheel was very difficult taking about 4 hours. Purchased new carbon fibre gear knob from eBay. Had to wrap that as well because the lines were diagonally opposite to what I had already done. Fitted new black OEM carpets The ecru ones where in good condition but not practical plus I felt the black complemented the newly wrapped black trim. Bought from Lexus online parts shop Fitted new correct size Numberplate’s. Rear numberplate is now 20” x 6” Fitted Dolphin Flush fit front & rear parking sensors. I wanted them to look like they had been fitted by Lexus as the raised surface wart type ruin the clean lines of the bumper in my opinion. Much harder to fit though and both bumpers hat to come off as they fit from the back. Also the sticky rubber fixing pads are useless so I used a good quality building adhesive. I selected the blue paint finish and it is a perfect match for my colour paintwork. Fitted SC430Mods.com LED Reversing light bulbs Fitted SC430Mods.com LED Indicator bulbs Fitted LED Sidelight bulbs Halfords 501 Repaired Audio door caused by me having had the centre console out on numerous occasions. Had door dings removed professionally. The guy I used was amazing resulting in a perfect finish Purchased Hamilton Classic Moltex Outdoor Car Cover as the car is kept on the road in a quiet cul de sac. I previous purchased from eBay a windscreen sun shied that was a perfect size for the SC and I used put two beach towels over the front and rear seats to protect from the sun. Fitted SC430Mods.com Throttle controller a fantastic mod that makes the SC seem so much quicker that you you can easily spin the wheels even in the dry on the highest setting. Fitted SC430mods.com LED Door projector lights Had Exhaust resonators deleted with a new Longlife exhaust section made by FastFit in Basingstoke who are part of the TopGear Group Fitted refurbished standard wheels fitted with Twist Centre caps in lieu of Pie Plates which I bought from another SC owner. I will keep these to put back on the car if I ever sell it. Ctek charger wiring fitted so I can now connect charger without lifting the bonnet or removing the car cover While doing the charger wiring I noticed a 14mm x 65mm bolt lying in the engine under tray. After trying to find where it was from I found one of the 3 bolts holding the A/C compressor completed unfastened and only stopped from falling out but an adjacent hose. I refitted the bolt and hoped the other one had been dropped and it was probably easier to replace it rather than find it. How wrong I was, this had played on my mind for some time so I removed the under tray a few weeks later to check, only to find out another bolt missing attaching the A/C compressor to the engine which was the one I originally found. So all all bolts are now fitted but I find it a bit worrying a mechanic would forget to tighten 2 of the 3 bolts but I guess these things happen. Fitted Basic Aldi tracker recommended to me by another SC owner at the SC Car Club event in Coventry this year Purchased NOCO jump battery starter from Amazon stored in boot so I never get caught out with a flat battery Purchased Fire Extinguisher from Aldi stored in boot. Hopefully will never be used Purchased Rear seats protective cover from eBay for use when using back seat for storage. It is meant for dogs and acts like a hammock so just right to protect the seats Things left to do Refit straight pipes replacing rear muffler depending on it having no drone after now having had the mufflers deleted. Some one made this for me at the beginning of the year and it does sound great but the drone is dreadful. If this doesn’t work I probably will have to go for a new rear sports box when funds permit as I have already spent £800 so far trying to get the right sound. I may decide To colour code the grille Not sure about tinting the window Fit New 19” Work Emitz wheels & tyres which are already on order from Japan via Driftworks UK. Ordered them March 2022 but currently now the end of July and they have only just been manufactured so hopefully I should get them by the end of September which is a lot longer than I was expecting. I am just hoping they are worth the wait and expense and that they suit the SC. I will post some pictures when they on the car. My favourite wheels are the Leon Hardritt Orden but their is no UK importer so you normally only see secondhand ones for sale at a premium that normally need refurbishing. If I find I am not as keen on the Emitz wheels in the flesh on the SC I may sell them on and try and source the Orden’s in the future. So far I have spent over £5000 but most of that has been on the exhaust and Work wheels. That will be probably about as far as I will go on changes as I don’t want to fit bigger brakes or lower the car. It is currently booked in for it’s MOT in August and I am getting the oil + filter and brake fluid changed as although they look clean I don’t know when they were done as the last official service done by Lexus was 2005. The last owner had many expensive cars including Jaguars, Range Rovers and an Aston Martin so I assume they went somewhere else independently. I hope I haven’t bored you by now.

  21. Yes because the batteries takes-up the space. Again that is why I found RC to be so practical. With seats folded I was able to fit two full size mountain bikes with wheels removed inside the boot, that they had quick release hubs obviously helped. There is no way I am fitting any sort of bike in IS250, the only option is to fit some sort of roof rack or something.

We'll on the way home from work today I thought I'd pop in to fuel up with 'the gudstuff'. OMG 199.9p a litre. Oh well £100.01 to fill up today. 24. I've confirmed it is 100% the motor on the fan that's faulty. Fuses and relays are fine. I hooked up a 12v bulb to the connector of the non-working fan and that bulb lights up when fan is supposed to be on. I even tried supplying 12v directly from battery to the motor to see if it runs but no luck. Seeing as the thermostat will be closed when engine is cold, I would think whatever coolant comes out will be just from the top of the radiator. So I could potentially just drain a small amount of fluid from the bottom of the radiator to lower the level and then remove the hose. Will that work?
    1 point
  25. Yes agreed - now that such a high bar has been set and people still kept / had to keep buying fuel and the fuel companies now know this I don't think we will see fuel much below £1.50 a litre again...

  26. To be fair, pull a caravan, run the a/c, and drive at non optimal speeds, and you significantly reduce the range of any car. That said, I take your point with regards to now, but you appear to be assuming that technology won't improve beyond what it is today. The reality is that the technolology will improve significantly over the next 20-30 years, and will deliver faster, cleaner and more efficient cars. It's not going to unhappen, and so it makes sense to at least prepare for it, even you're not willing/able to embrace it.

  27. Sorry no disrespect intended, it’s just even the newest now will be getting on in years and mileage, and paying through the nose for a low mileage 10 year old car seems a bit of a waste unless it’s a real hard desire. There seem to be quite a few of each description on something like Autotrader, but I do know a cherished and looked after vehicle can be as good as new to the owner.

  28. You cheeky man! I am sure there are many on here who would disagree with you, I certainly do! I have just returned home after a 400 mile road trip and it never missed a beat causing interest and admiring glances wherever I go. I believe it's versatility, performance, comfort and reliability are second to none. It appears from the vehicle you indicate you own that you are not conversant with newer vehicles and certainly not the SC430. Kind regards Anthony

  29. I really appreciate your help with this. It's definitely a UK LS400 but the repair does look like it's using a Japanese spec bumper, has no headlight washers and there is a 'ariel/flag post/parking marker' on the NSF corner. It has a belt driven viscous coupling fan which isn't brilliantly close/sealed to the radiator shroud but I've realised that this is a feature to enable radiator removal without having to take the fan off. I'm in the office today but will check when I get home under the car.

  30. Yes, I could see availability being an issue. As your car is "brand new" I should get the screen and paint done via Lexus. It might cost more but on a £100K car...

  31. I wouldnt think many LC500's have Likely it will be a Lexus genuine screen but you will need the radar and safety systems calibrating afterwards. What colour is yours? The Sonic red is a PITA to respray as are most of the 4 stage colours

  33. The idea is to use the OHLE purely on Motorway/Autobahn and the truck has battery back up for the short journeys to delivery locations. I believe the answer to heavy trucks will be Hydrogen…..eventually, just as we have buses now locally purely on CNG.

  37. Here's what I did ... From the Lexus Link notifications I worked out a 3 day window of departure dates from Nagoya, the port Lexus use in Japan. I used, https://www.myshiptracking.com/ports-arrivals-departures to search for ships leaving the port on these dates. This includes all ships but I could ignore the tugs, high speed vessels, passenger ships, tankers and yachts (teal, brown, blue, red and purple dots respectively). I picked out the ships classed as vehicle carriers; reducing the number of ships from 204 to 14. Over a couple of days, I plotted the positions of all 14 and eliminated the ones heading in the wrong direction. This left zero ships! Vaguely possible, one ship. Then, fortunately, somebody put up a post naming the Viking Adventure, which he had been given by his dealer. I checked my original list again and the Viking Adventure was listed but as a cargo ship, not a vehicle carrier. Hence why I had missed it. My dealer, several days later, was able to confirm that my vehicle was indeed on the Viking Adventure. Hope that helps. Good luck.

  38. Since the gauges actually work, and since getting a spare one seems to be nigh on impossible, wouldn't just wiring up some LEDs in the back to an ignition live feed to provide the needed backlighting work?

  41. My lexus ownership started with the is300h. It was advertised by lexus leeds as Premier Premium. It wasn't a patch on the 2nd Premier Premium I bought. Both identical colour year spec but like chalk and cheese. The 2nd one was sublime. The ML was Awesome (1st one with ML was Awful). The handling too was fabulous. How does that 300h compare to my current is250? Well the fuel economy wipes the floor. Never got less than 50mpg. Yes I drove it hard most of the time. As for the engine noise when you floor it yes the 250 is oh so much better but the 300h isn't that bad ( just have the music on loud as I do). How did my 300h accelerate? Well with a full traction battery it went off the line like a scalded cat. I'd say there's nothing in it compared to the 250. Ride quality better due to the 300h being so much newer. Would I go back to an is300h? Yes. I loved that car and only let it go for the awesome RX450H f-sport which was fully loaded. I wouldn't worry one bit about getting an is300h. Just take the potential purchase for a damn good test drive. They're not all the same. I had 2 identical top of the range yet they were like chalk and cheese.

  43. Best solution I've found for speed camera/traffic/congestion warnings is to install the Radarbot app onto my Android Phone. It integrates well with Android Auto, so I use this for navigation. When sounding a warning, the app dims the radio/audio that is playing so the warning is loud and clear. There is a good, clear graphic overlaid on the map that shows distance to the speed camera and a level of confidence as to whether the camera is active or not.

  46. I got stopped by the Police on the M1 near Leicester - must have been before 2015 as I was doing a job then that required regular travel up North. Officer was great - I was only going about 75mph, but it was very early and I didn’t slow down when I passed him so he decided to pull me over on a slip road. We had a nice chat, he asked what I did for a living, why I was driving so early, and he reminded me to stay focussed and to make sure I wasn't too tired. All very good. No fine issued, he wished me well and away I went. What sticks in my mind is that he was curious to know what the registration number was all about as it clearly wasn’t my initials! Which made me think of this… https://www.thedailymash.co.uk/news/society/gchq-codebreakers-working-on-personalised-numberplates-2013100880154
