Lexus has been producing cars for many years of various sizes, shapes and functions. But why are model names chosen when a new car is launched? This short guide explains why certain letters appear after some of Lexus’ most iconic vehicles
Lexus CT
CT stands for Creative Touring. Creative represents the daring debut of a full hybrid powertrain when diesels dominated. Touring dispels the myth that the batteries used to power the electric motor mean less room for passengers and luggage.
Lexus UX
The UX was Lexus’ first truly compact luxury crossover. The aim was to embody a free-spirited style that would appeal to modern urban explorers who seek fresh, dynamic takes on a luxury lifestyle. Hence the name UX stands for Urban Crossover.
Lexus IS
The IS 200 was launched in 1999, combining traditional Lexus qualities in a smaller, more mechanically dynamic package aimed at younger customers. That’s why IS stands for Intelligent Sports.
Lexus NX
The Nimble Crossover is the point where a luxury mid-size saloon meets a capable off-road vehicle. Its smaller, more wieldy size makes it a perfect tool for both urban and country routes.
Lexus ES
Launched alongside LS back in 1989, the mid-size Lexus Executive Sedan is one of Lexus’ most popular saloons. From 2019 onwards, the seventh generation of the ES will be available in Europe.
Lexus RC
The Lexus RC challenged perceptions about what a self-charging, petrol-electric hybrid should look like. Hence the name Radical Coupé. As the first Lexus hybrid packaged in a premium two-door coupé shell, it delivers impressive design, Lexus luxury and craftsmanship, and a refined and engaging driving experience.
Lexus RC F
The F in RC F denotes our high performance, sport models. Under the bonnet, the most powerful V8 road engine ever developed by Lexus delivers its 463 DIN hp to the rear wheels. The F is a reference to Fuji Speedway in Japan, where hundreds of hours of testing were done on the RC F by master drivers.
Lexus RX
The RX model name stands for Radiant Crossover. The word Radiant represents the bright new future Lexus envisioned at the car’s launch at the start of the Millennium. The model was the first sports utility vehicle that marked a Crossover point between a luxury saloon and an off-roader.
Lexus RX L
The L in RX L denotes the longer length for additional interior space that, in this case, can accommodate a third row of seats.
Lexus LC
LC stands for Luxury Coupé. That’s because the car combines the luxuries of a flagship saloon with the seductive, sporting aesthetic of a grand touring coupé. This flagship two-plus-two is engineered in every dimension to deliver a very special and rewarding driving experience.
Lexus LS
The original Luxury Sedan launched in 1989 and was billed as the finest luxury car in the world by parent company Toyota as well as the motoring press. The Sedan part of the name refers to the model’s traditional four-door, two-box shape.
