  1. You can get the kit from www.vaistech.com. The only downside is that it will not play fully randomly. It emulates an MD changer and gives you maximum 99 (virtual) discs each with 99 tracks, but you can only play randomly within each disc. But this is a minor gripe. Early models interfered with the GPS signal on the Satnav but I think they have it sorted now. Anyway provided the kit is kept well away from the GPS aerial it is not a problem.
  2. Try accidentally hitting the "Overwrite" button instead of "Add" when putting in a new number..............!
  3. They say never buy a green car because they are worth less on resale - remember those dayglo Marinas? However, my GS is Boreal Green and the reason I chose it was because it really stood out from the others. It looks a bit like drab olive in murky weather, but when the sun shines it has a golden sparkle and at night it looks like gun metal grey - so you get several colours in one.
  4. Put the car into Lexus MK to check out excessive road noise. They spent all day on it, swapping the wheels with another car and then refitting mine diagonally, reducing the noise to an acceptable level. They found nothing wrong mechanically, buy blame the Yokohamas which I will switch next time. There was no charge of course but here's the best bit, they "slapped on a new set of alloys because they were showing a bit of corrosion..........!" :o Try that in a Merc garage!
  5. I'm getting a bit of a howl from (presumably) the tyres at between 55 and 80, which isn't there at other speeds. Admittedly its only noticeable because the car is so quiet, but it is till annoying. These are standard fit Yokohama 245/40/18s on the MkIII GS. Anyone else got this?
  6. Had this response from VAIS re the problem with the SatNav: We had this problem back in January, and have already fixed it, all we need is to get your unit here for one day. -- Best regards, Eugene Kaspin VAIS Technology phone: 720-733-2348 e-mail: info@vaistech.com Oh boll :tsktsk: ks ! I'll just drive on over then............. Having said that, the GPS signal came back and whilst it flickers from time to time, the car hasn't got lost yet. Still, y'all had best be aware.
  7. A few days after I got the VAIS gadget fitted, the SatNav stopped working (lost the GPS signal). Took it back to Lexus MK, who said it was probably the navigation disc (doh!). Sounded odd to me but I let them put in a new one and still it didn't work. Took it back for them to pull out the sound system again and they said the gadget's control box was interfering with the GPS signal so they moved it (last Thursday). SatNav worked fine over the weekend, then started to flicker yesterday and by the afternoon the GPS symbol had disappeared altogether. Working my way up to frazzle over this - but I can't believe it was VAIS's fault. Have emailed them to query it - will keep y'all posted.
  8. Filled up, got on the motorway and cruised at 65mph until the mpg readout hit 40. Seriously this new GS regularly gives me 34mpg mixed driving which is 8 more than the MK1 - Ok I admit I'm a lightfoot. Ran the range down to zero today and took only 61 litres to refill - wonder how far it will go?
  9. I got the rattle too. Its minor but its there and it shouldn't be, although if the car wasn't so quiet anyway, you may not notice. It certainly does not have the build quality of my old MK1. PS Some git nicked two of my tyre valve caps. The other two were on so tight they won't budge. I am going to recommend to Lexus they electrify the body when locked. That'll keep cats off the bonnet too!
  10. I assume there is only one input to the head unit and that is used by the CD player. The VAIS gizmo replaces the line into the head unit with a dual connector, one for the IPOD and one for the CD player, as well as integrating the IPOD with the car stereo controls. VAIS don't just do IPOD connectors though. They provide an auxiliary input for other makes, its just that they may not have the same level of integration.
  11. Had Lexus Milton Keynes fit the VAIS unit last week. They charged £160 for the privilege, but it was worth it. The head unit thinks it is another CD changer and you switch over to it using the Mode button. The Ipod sits in the glovebox connecting to a cable which leads to the head unit. The VAIS unit keeps the IPOD charged and when you switch off the ignition, puts the IPOD into sleep mode, so you can leave it in all the time. One issue, though especially if you have a very large CD collection. The VAIS unit allows a maximum 99 playlists with 99 tracks in each. i.e. 10,000 tracks and treats each playlist as a separate disc. It won't play randomly across playlists, only within them. So you can't have true random selection. You could completely randomise your collection and then load up the playlists accordingly but then you would never be able to find anything! I have created 20 playlists specific to my favourite bands and the other 79 playlists are totally random and include all my favouriute bands again, a reasonable compromise. One final note for anyone shipping from the States. The box contains a license agreement specifically prohibiting export ( I guess they don't have a license) so make sure your US mates know this or they could end up in Guantanamo!
  12. I regularly ran my MK1 with the light on - sometimes up to 30 miles or so and never put more than 64 litres in it. The MK3 has told me my range is down to 15 miles with the light on and the needle at zero and 62 litres is the record fill up! If I had the bottle I'd go all the way just to find out...........
  13. Couldn't wait for the group buy guys, so my friend in Boston ordered it and shipped it over. Arrived yesterday (took 6 weeks by air mail!) so I'm taking it down to the Milton Keynes dealership next week (for my "free" Spring safety check) and ask I'll be asking them to fit it. Let you know what happens. By the way, I thought the Customs & Excise gestapo would have intercepted the parcel and added import duty and VAT (21%) but they didn't, despite it being correctly described on the customs dec. If you get one shipped over, bear in mind this might happen.
  14. Done 4000 miles in my new Gs300SEL - here's my view (in comparison to a MK1 GS300Sport - never had a Mk2) Delights - Handling good (but still not brilliant) - Sound system breathtaking (even if its only a 6CD) - Lights excellent - Performance - faster, quieter and more economical - 30 on average and 38 on the motorway. At 70mph its only pulling 1850 rpm. - Keyless entry - clever once you get used to it and just lurrv the Start button - Reversing camera - very very clever once you learn to trust it. - Parking sensors accurate and useful - Auto recirc on climate control very effective (but see also Disappointments) - Interior handle on boot lid handy (the simplest things are often the best) - Bluetooth phone works a treat - SatNav is good but doesn't accept a full postcode Disappointments - Leather nowhere near as good and lots more plastic - Build quality not on par with a Mk1, both inside and out. - Sorry - don't take to the instrument panel - at night motorway overhead light reflection swirls around the dials - Cheap plastic catflap behind the rear seat armrest - Drop down panel of switches are flimsy, hard to see and on the whole, pretty naff. - Rain sensitive wipers are just a nuisance - Climate control overall harder to use and less responsive - Auto recirc - watch out in muggy weather behind a bus- you'll steam up in 5 seconds - almost crashed twice trying to clear the screen - No better in the snow and ice (although couldn't be any worse than the MK1) - Miss my 275/35s on the back (but don't miss the punctures) Overall We are used to such high standards so I gotta say this is a very very nice Toyota, with lots of clever toys, but if you took away the badges I wouldn't guess it was a Lexus.
  15. I have a new GS300 and a Nokia 6230i. I have to transfer contacts one at a time using the Send Business Card feature, during which the hands free temporarily disconnects. Its a pain but at least its a one-off exercise. I am told there is no way of sending the whole phone book with this phone - maybe yours is the same?
  16. I loved my 1996 Mk1 Sport but you had to take the corners gently as it rolled and wallowed like a 2CV (OK that's an exaggeration!). It was also useless in snow, those 275/35s on the back put no weight down. (But I still miss it dearly). I drove the Mk2 and now have a Mk3 and they are heaps better - but I am just waiting for the first snowfall....
  17. we are doing a deal with them on price - ie a "Group Buy". we (as members) buy X amount of units - and we get a discount on the price. ← I don't want to hassle you Matt but I am getting heavy metal withdrawal symptons - is this deal coming off soon and if so what's the procedure?
  18. yes ;) ← So are you doing a deal with them on price or do I just order direct?
  19. keep your eyes on the fourm next week then ;) very easy to fit, simply plugs into the back of the stereo - and does exactly what it says on the tin - lets you play your ipod through the OEM stereo. Complete with track details on the OEM screen. very, very cool B) ← Matt - are you talking about the VAIS Technology Soundlinq? It looks like it does the trick.
  20. I have a 6230i and Bluetooth works fine. The only pain is that you have to transfer your phone book contacts one at a time, but its just a one off exercise.
  21. I had a GS for almost 10 years then in a moment of madness, bought a Jag XJ, had it for 6 weeks and went back to a GS. Got seriously burned, but what the hell - I'm back.
  22. This is exactly the solution I want - but Lexus Milton Keynes just shrug their shoulders!
