  1. Check your gearbox and diff mountings, for if these are worn they can cause these types of noises. I would recommend you change your gear oil and filter regularly but be sure to use the correct gear oil and have somebody reputable carry this out. One way to check gear oil is to allow the car to reach normal running temperature, then engage each gear manually for a few seconds, put the car in P and while the engine is running, check the oil level. When checking oil see that the oil is not very black, doesn't have a burnt smell and contains no metallic residue as this may indicate wear on some of the internal components. Not to scare you but "lexus is" auto transmissions do have a tendency of packing up after about 100k kms as was the case with mine. The best advice I can give you though is DON'T TAKE YOUR LEXUS TO SOME BACKDOOR MECHANIC OR SOMEONE YOU DONT TRUST< ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO YOUR AUTO TRANSMISSION> I hope this helps and hope its something small.
  2. (Sorry guys but I seem to have got lost on the forum in trying to post this picture. This post is found in the gallery section as well.) *Thanks to all for the kind compliments and i apologiser for not replying sooner. I got some led bulbs and electrical trunking (16x16mm). holes were drilled into the trunking to house the leds. the trunking and headlight inners were then painted with the same matt black high heat spray paint. I stuck the trunking to the headlight with double sided tape (the best quality one that looks like clear plastic). *The leds are wired up through my relay that I had installed for my halos. *One thing I noticed though is that they are too bright at 12v so i stepped the power supply to the leds down to 6v by simply running them through the cheap mobile phone chargers that you plug into your cigarette lighter socket. the circuitry is all done and its pretty cheap to replace. *Yes they do operate as drl's. *I liked the straight look although I did consider the curved appearance. The straight look is a bit different from the audi ones and the spacing between the leds on my car is less. I really didn't put much thought into it as i reached a point where I needed to get my car together again asap so I didn't experiment too much. Now that I've done it this far I have a better feel for any new potential improvements. *I would welcome any suggestions. *They do look great at night and i would love to post some more pics but can anyone tell me what the easiest way to post pics on this forum is? Thanks again for all the replies I my compliments go out to the cars featured on this forum. You guys really do take pride in your rides.

  6. hi. no need to use the relay. i upgraded my horn a while ago and i remember simply grounding one of the pin to a bolt on the body. my horn sounds muuuch better now. if you still have trouble, i'll try to post some pics tomorrow as its quite dark here already.
  7. hi. does anyone know if the lexus three button key fob is compatible with the altezza one which has the buttons on the side of the key?
  8. when filling the radiator be careful not to use cold water when the engine is hot and not running. the reason being that cold water can sometimes warp the cylinder head. if the car is hot add water while the engine is running or top up when the engine is still cold.
  9. thanks for the help guys. i was beginning to think of a faulty coil or something of that sort. i'll check the symptom index . and addusting the pos sensor.
  10. Good day all. I have a problem that seems intermittent. after travelling for a few kilometres, say when the car is really warmed up and i stop at atraffic light, the car begins to idle very roughly. it almost feels as though it wants to cut off and then revives itself. the revs do drop and suddenly rise. its not too bad yet. while driving though it's as smooth as ever. any suggestions will be appreciated. thanks in advance
  11. i've bought 2 a while back. i only fitted it to my corolla rxi. that's a 1.6, 20valve ae110 model. i don't know if you guys are familiar with this model. anyways i don't know if it was simply psychological or not but i felt a slight increase in performance especially at the lower end and my fuel consumption seems to have decreased somewhat. i am in no way endorsing the product but this is my experience. i didn't fit it to my lexus as the intake is rather flat and there's no way it will fit at the front of the intake pipe. i'll have to check if it may work behind the air filter.
  12. HI. if you feel the noise may be tranny related, check your transmission oil level and the colour of the oil. black oil is not a good sign. this is ofcourse if your car is auto. my car made a loud almost zinging sound before my transmission packed in and the sound was worse when the car was cold. it also subsided somewhat on higher revs and when the car warmed up. i hope this is not the problem you're having.
  13. hi, i'm relatively new to this forum. i think the info here is fanatastic. thanks to all who contribute. about the smoke from the hood... check to see if all the plastic covers on the engine are ok. i had a similar problem and found that the plastic cowling that goes along the side of the engine, the one that extends from under the oil cap gets brittle after some time. it then breaks up and pieces fall onto the manifold. when the plastic pieces melt they give off smoke. you will find a type of burning smell when you open the bonnet. if this is the problem, scrape off as much of the pieces off the manifold and replace the cowling. i hope this helps.
  14. I had the same problem. my car is still at the gearbox centre. the problem with your second gearbox may have been that the oil or cooling system may not have been completely drained before the gb was fitted. the gunk that remained in the oil from the first box then went on to damage the the 2nd box. another possibility is that the gb is not running cool enough which causes the solenoid to burn out. you may have to consider adding an additional cooling system to your box. if you're still interested, let me know and i'll get you the details of how my car is doing and what the solution was.
  15. Certainly worth checking. My gut reaction though is that it is the drive shaft or differential. However, there are no clunks at low speed in high gears though a bit of gearbox whine. Why the vibration and loud thump should happen coasting downhill in 6th I am not sure. Thanks for sharing your experience on this one. My is is an automatic but i had a similar problem. the thunk was coming from the differential. there are two rubber mountings on the diff. these mounts were worn out on my car. the resultant play on the diff caused movement on the gearbox eventually causing my gearbox casing to get damaged. well my entire gearbox then packed up and a lot of money later was repaired. check your diff mounts as well as your gearbox and engine mounts.
